The original claim is now historical. Google extended its Stadia Controller Bluetooth conversion tool through December 31, 2025. The official Google page then went offline, reportedly returning a 404 around January 20, 2026. An unofficial community backup may still convert an unconverted controller, while controllers left untouched can still work over USB. A controller converted before the deadline does not stop working simply because the deadline passed.
The deadline and what changed
Google created a browser-based utility to replace the Stadia Controller’s proprietary Wi-Fi firmware with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) firmware. The conversion was required for wireless use with other devices after Stadia’s cloud-gaming service shut down.
Google initially planned to end the utility at the end of 2023, then extended it through 2024. On December 9, 2024, Google announced another extension through December 31, 2025. The official page did not disappear precisely at midnight; reports found it returning a 404 error around January 20, 2026. The original address was https://stadia.google.com/controller.
Google’s Help Center still displays December 31, 2024, but contemporary reporting documented the later 2025 extension. The final announced deadline is therefore December 31, 2025, not the older date shown in that help article.

What conversion does to the controller
The firmware switch disables Stadia’s proprietary Wi-Fi connection and enables BLE. That allows wireless pairing with supported computers, phones, tablets and other devices. It does not restore Stadia cloud gaming.
Google describes the change as permanent: Bluetooth mode cannot be reversed to Stadia Wi-Fi mode. The deadline concerned access to the conversion process, not an expiration date for Bluetooth firmware. A controller converted before January 2026 can continue to be used wirelessly, subject to device and game compatibility.
The Assistant and Capture buttons no longer perform their original Stadia functions. They may be remapped with compatible software, but they are not restored by Bluetooth mode. Wireless controller-based headphone audio also is not available in Bluetooth mode. Wired headphones can work when the controller is connected by USB.

What options remain in 2026?
Use the unofficial community backup
Developer Christopher Klay hosts a preserved copy of the web tool at https://christopherklay.github.io/stadiacontroller/. Its source is available at https://github.com/ChristopherKlay/stadiacontroller. The repository describes the project as an unedited backup with a disclaimer and removal of automatic language redirects.
This is not a Google service. It has no Google customer support, independent security audit, universal compatibility guarantee or promise of indefinite availability. Treat it as an unofficial preservation project and inspect the repository and browser prompts before proceeding.
Keep using the controller over USB
An unconverted controller is not automatically useless. Google states that wired USB operation remains possible whether or not Bluetooth mode has been enabled. This is the lowest-risk option if you do not need wireless play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReplace it
A current controller is more practical when you need manufacturer support, predictable platform compatibility, current firmware, dependable remapping or wireless headphone features.
How to try the community conversion

- TMR Joysticks - Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability.
- 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
- Charge the controller for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare a USB-C cable that carries data, not just power. The cable supplied with the controller should work.
- Use a computer with Google Chrome. Google’s original requirement was Chrome 108 or later.
- Open the community backup.
- Hold the Stadia button until the controller powers on, connect it by USB, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Do not unplug the controller or close the browser while firmware flashing is in progress.
- When the process finishes, pair the controller from the target device’s Bluetooth settings.
The backup may fail on a particular browser, operating system, cable or controller. A charging cable can power the controller while preventing Chrome from detecting it.
Pairing after conversion
- Turn the controller off if necessary.
- Hold Stadia + Y for about two seconds.
- Wait for the status light to pulse orange.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the computer, phone or tablet.
- Select the device whose name includes “Stadia.” A successful connection should produce a solid white light.
To move to another device, repeat the Stadia + Y procedure. The controller may reconnect automatically to its last paired device.
Compatibility and limitations
Google’s documented testing focused on:
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 with Steam
- macOS 13 with Steam
- ChromeOS
- Android
A computer needs a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter. Other Bluetooth-capable platforms may work, but Google did not guarantee every device, service or game. A controller pairing successfully does not ensure that a particular game recognizes its inputs, and vibration may be unavailable on some systems.
Do not assume full compatibility with PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, smart televisions or every Android TV device without checking that specific hardware and game.

The browser cannot see the controller
- Replace the cable with the original cable or another known USB data cable.
- Charge the controller for at least 30 minutes.
- Try another USB port and restart Chrome.
The update appears stuck
Do not disconnect during a flash. If the process has failed, unplug the controller, hold the Stadia button for 10 seconds to reset it, reconnect it and retry. Google does not promise that every failed flash is recoverable.

Factory reset and re-pairing
For a factory reset, hold the Google Assistant and Capture buttons together for about six seconds. The controller may need to be paired again afterward.
Linux permissions
Google says Linux users may need additional udev rules:
{ cat <<EOF
# SDP protocol
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1fc9", MODE="0666"
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="1fc9", MODE="0666"
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0d28", MODE="0666"
# Flashloader
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="15a2", MODE="0666"
# Controller
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="18d1", MODE="0666"
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="18d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9400", MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess"
EOF
} | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/70-stadiacontroller-flash.rules
Then reload the rules:
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules && sudo udevadm trigger
Linux distributions handle permissions differently, so these commands may require adjustment. Full instructions are in Google’s help article: https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/13067284?hl=en.
Should you convert yours?
| Situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| You want wireless use with a compatible PC, phone or Chromebook and accept an unofficial tool | Try the community backup |
| You only need a wired controller | Leave it unconverted and use USB |
| You need official support and predictable compatibility | Buy a current controller |
| You need wireless headphone audio through the controller | Use another controller, or use the Stadia controller wired |
| The battery, USB port or buttons are failing | Replacement is likely more practical |
For accessories, choose a dependable USB-C data cable. A desktop without BLE may also need a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter, although that will not solve game-specific mapping problems. Current controllers from manufacturers such as Xbox, 8BitDo and GameSir offer clearer current support, but compatibility and pricing depend on the model.
