Infinix CoolMax explained: what happened to the rumored GT Ultra gaming phone?

Infinix showed a Peltier-and-fan CoolMax gaming-phone concept in 2024. The rumored GT Ultra remained unconfirmed as later GT models adopted different cooling systems.

Infinix demonstrated its CoolMax active-cooling technology at MWC 2024, claiming it could cut temperatures by up to 10°C on a Dimensity 9300 gaming-phone concept. Reports linked the prototype to a future “GT Ultra,” but Infinix did not publish a complete retail launch announcement under that name. By 2026, later GT phones were using different cooling designs, so GT Ultra remains an expected or teased product rather than a confirmed CoolMax handset.

What Infinix showed at MWC 2024

At the ShowStoppers MWC 2024 event in Barcelona on February 25–26, Infinix presented a flagship-level mobile-gaming platform rather than a fully specified retail phone. Its demonstration combined a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor, the CoolMax cooling system, Pixelworks visual processing and AI-based core and power management. Infinix said it planned a first “dual-core flagship gaming smartphone” for 2024, but the official announcement did not clearly give that phone the GT Ultra name.

Contemporaneous coverage, including Gadgets 360 and Notebookcheck, treated GT Ultra as the likely name of the teased device. That is different from a confirmed model number, launch date, price or retail specification sheet.

How CoolMax is supposed to work

CoolMax is not conventional liquid cooling. Infinix described it as a semiconductor-and-air system built around thermoelectric cooling (TEC), the Peltier effect and a fan-assisted heat-dissipation path.

Thermoelectric module

A TEC module uses electricity to create a hot side and a cold side. The Peltier effect moves heat across the semiconductor when current flows. The cold side can draw heat away from the processor, while the hot side still has to be spread and expelled.

Fan and heat dissipation

The fan and surrounding thermal hardware remove heat from the hot side. This can help a phone sustain performance, but it does not make heat disappear; it relocates the heat and adds power, space and mechanical complexity.

AI-based management

Infinix also said its software dynamically manages processor cores and power according to workload. Running only the cores needed for a task could reduce unnecessary heat, although that is an engineering rationale rather than an independently measured retail result.

What the headline numbers actually mean

Claim What is established
Temperature reduction Infinix claimed “up to 10°C.” Its announcement did not state the game, ambient temperature, duration, baseline, power mode or whether the measurement was for the SoC, internal hardware or exterior surface.
AnTuTu score The official figure was 2,215,639 points for the concept platform. A report showing 22,156,639 appears to be a transcription error.
Display capability Infinix cited up to 180Hz at FHD+ and 144Hz at WQHD+ with Pixelworks processing. Those are platform claims, not proof that every game would render at those frame rates.

The source for these figures is Infinix’s MWC announcement. The 10°C figure is a maximum company claim, not a universal or independently verified result. AnTuTu is a synthetic benchmark and cannot establish 30- or 60-minute frame-rate stability, battery endurance or how warm the phone feels in a player’s hand.

Was GT Ultra ever confirmed?

No sufficiently detailed evidence confirms that an Infinix GT Ultra launched as the CoolMax-equipped retail phone anticipated in 2024. The defensible distinction is:

  • Official: Infinix showed CoolMax and said a dual-core flagship gaming phone was planned for 2024.
  • Reported or inferred: Media reports expected that phone to be called GT Ultra and linked it with CoolMax.
  • Not established: a final retail name, price, complete specifications, commercial availability or proof that CoolMax shipped in that model.

“Dual-core” should also be read cautiously. Infinix’s wording appears to describe a main application processor working with a separate graphics or visual-processing component, not a phone whose CPU contains only two conventional cores.

Why active cooling is useful—and difficult—in a phone

Potential benefit

Lower internal temperatures can delay thermal throttling, allowing a flagship chipset to hold higher performance for longer. AI scheduling may improve performance-per-watt when it avoids using large cores unnecessarily.

Engineering costs

  • A TEC module consumes electricity, which can reduce gaming battery life if its thermal gain is modest.
  • Peltier cooling moves heat to another surface that still needs a heat spreader and airflow path.
  • A fan adds noise, dust exposure and a moving part.
  • The module, fan and heat path consume internal volume and may increase thickness.
  • Cooling a processor does not guarantee that every exterior surface feels cooler.
  • If any system cools below ambient dew point, condensation is a theoretical concern; no available Infinix material shows that CoolMax operated in that condition.

Results can also change with ambient temperature, a phone case, charging, network activity, game settings and firmware. A prototype demonstration and an external accessory should not be assumed to perform like an integrated mass-produced phone.

Other MWC concepts were not proof of a GT Ultra feature set

Infinix’s surrounding demonstrations included AirCharge magnetic-resonance charging described as working over distances of up to 20cm, an Extreme-Temp Battery concept said to support charging as low as −40°C, and an E-Color Shift rear panel using E Ink Prism with up to 60 customizable areas. These were technology concepts; the announcement did not establish that all of them would ship in a GT Ultra.

What happened in later GT phones?

Model Cooling approach What it tells us
GT 30 Pro (2025) 3D Vapor Cloud Chamber Infinix documented a later gaming phone using vapor-chamber cooling, not CoolMax. Official announcement
GT 30 global model 3D Vapor Cloud Chamber Global-launch material again described 3DVCC; an announcement-era price around US$200 was not a guaranteed 2026 street price. Official announcement
GT 50 Pro (2026) HydroFlow liquid cooling plus a separate 12W active thermoelectric GT Magcharge Cooler 2.0 This is a distinct later thermal design, not evidence that CoolMax shipped in GT Ultra. Official announcement

What buyers should look for now

If you are choosing an actual Infinix gaming phone, judge the specific regional model rather than the old GT Ultra teaser. Look for sustained frame-rate tests, internal and surface-temperature measurements, battery life during gaming, cooler compatibility, software support, warranty service and network-band compatibility. The GT 30 Pro and GT 50 Pro are documented later products, but neither should be marketed as the unconfirmed CoolMax GT Ultra.

Verdict

CoolMax was a genuine Infinix technology demonstration: a Peltier-based thermoelectric system paired with air cooling, AI power management and a Dimensity 9300 concept platform. Infinix’s “up to 10°C” and 2,215,639-point claims belong to that demonstration and need their stated limitations. GT Ultra was a plausible name attached by reports to the planned flagship, but the available record does not support calling it a confirmed commercial launch. Later GT phones moved to vapor-chamber, HydroFlow and accessory-based thermoelectric cooling instead.
