LG announced its first fully fledged gaming laptop, the UltraGear 17G90Q, on December 20, 2021. It paired an 11th-generation Intel processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q graphics, 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and a 300Hz 17.3-inch display with a chassis philosophy influenced by LG’s thin Gram laptops. LG planned an early-2022 launch in the United States and South Korea, but its announcement did not disclose a price. As of August 18, 2026, no current official UltraGear 17G90Q retail listing has been verified.
What LG’s first gaming laptop was
The UltraGear 17G90Q extended LG’s UltraGear gaming brand beyond monitors and related hardware. LG described it as its first “fully fledged” gaming laptop, using a relatively thin design inspired by the Gram 17 rather than the much bulkier styling common among high-performance notebooks at the time. The launch report called the machine thin and fairly light, but did not provide verified weight or thickness figures, so those claims should not be treated as numerical specifications. (Android Headlines, December 20, 2021)
That design did not make it an ultraportable. A 17.3-inch screen, gaming-class cooling and a substantial power adapter still place it in the large-laptop category; the distinction was portability relative to heavier gaming systems, not equivalence to a 13- or 14-inch notebook.

Why the slim design mattered
The 17G90Q’s central idea was to put unusually powerful mobile hardware into a chassis shaped by LG’s Gram design language. Its RTX 3080 Max-Q GPU and 300Hz panel demanded considerably more cooling than an ordinary thin productivity laptop. LG highlighted a vapor chamber to help manage that heat.
A vapor chamber is one part of a thermal system, not evidence that a laptop will remain cool or quiet. Fan design, heatsink area, air intakes, exhaust paths, firmware and component power limits all affect sustained performance. No independent measurements of the 17G90Q’s temperatures, acoustics, throttling or clock speeds were included in the available coverage.
What RTX 3080 Max-Q meant in practice
“Max-Q” identified a mobile implementation tuned for efficiency and thinner systems. It was not equivalent to a desktop RTX 3080, and laptop RTX 3080 results varied substantially according to the manufacturer’s wattage setting, cooling capacity, memory configuration and software tuning.
LG positioned the laptop for demanding games at high settings, but the announcement supplied no game benchmarks. The GPU name alone therefore cannot establish a frame-rate expectation, especially when comparing the 17G90Q with newer laptops. A buyer evaluating a used unit should seek tests for the exact configuration rather than rely on the RTX 3080 label.

Why pair Full HD with 300Hz?
A 300Hz refresh rate targets competitive games in which extremely high frame rates and display latency matter. Full HD also requires less rendering power than QHD or 4K, making it more plausible for an RTX 3080 Max-Q laptop to approach the panel’s refresh ceiling in suitable esports titles.
Refresh rate is not frame rate: a 300Hz panel cannot display 300 distinct frames per second unless the game and system actually produce them. In slower cinematic games, image quality and resolution may matter more. On a 17.3-inch screen, Full HD is also less sharp than modern QHD alternatives. The launch report did not provide response time, brightness, color coverage, adaptive-sync support or measured input latency.
Announcement versus availability
- Announced: LG revealed the UltraGear 17G90Q on December 20, 2021.
- Planned launch: LG said it intended to release the laptop in early 2022, initially in the United States and South Korea, with more information expected around its January 4 CES press conference.
- Current status: As of August 18, 2026, current LG pages document Gram systems and newer Gram Pro configurations, but no active official UltraGear 17G90Q product listing or verified official retail price was found. The former LG Newsroom announcement URL now redirects to the general newsroom: LG Newsroom.
The early-2022 date was a launch plan, not confirmation that every market received the product or that it remains supported and sold today.

For buyers wanting a current LG laptop
LG’s 2026 U.S. Gram announcement says select Gram Pro configurations offer optional NVIDIA GeForce RTX discrete graphics for creative work and gaming. Listed U.S. prices for specific 2026 Gram configurations ranged from $1,149.99 to $2,399.99; those are model-specific announced prices, not prices for the 17G90Q. See LG’s 2026 Gram pricing announcement and the official LG 2026 Gram lineup release.
Those Gram systems may suit someone who values portability and occasional gaming, but they are not automatically a direct UltraGear successor. Confirm the specific GPU wattage, display refresh rate, cooling behavior and warranty for the exact configuration. For context, an actively documented Gram listing such as the LG 15Z90S-H uses Intel Arc integrated graphics rather than a dedicated RTX GPU.
Who the original design suited
- Competitive players: The 300Hz panel is the most relevant feature, provided the games played can reach very high frame rates.
- AAA players: GPU capability matters more than 300Hz, and a sharper QHD display may be preferable.
- Creators: 32GB of RAM and RTX graphics look useful on paper, but no creator-application testing was provided.
- Travelers: The Gram-influenced chassis may be easier to carry than a conventional high-end gaming laptop, while the 17.3-inch display and charger still add bulk.
Verdict
The UltraGear 17G90Q was an ambitious 2021 experiment: high-end mobile graphics, a very fast Full HD panel, generous memory and a Gram-inspired thin design. Its unanswered questions—price, GPU power limit, sustained thermals, acoustics and real-world availability—matter more than the headline RTX 3080 name when assessing it now. In 2026, it is best understood as a historical LG gaming-laptop launch or a carefully checked used purchase, while current buyers should compare specific Gram RTX configurations or modern dedicated gaming laptops using measured power, cooling, display and warranty details.
