In February 2020, the Global Beta Testing Network (GBTN) appeared to add Google Stadia as a platform option. That suggested Stadia users might be invited to test unreleased games, potentially for compensation. No specific game or test date was announced, Google did not confirm a public Stadia beta program, and registering with GBTN never guaranteed selection. Stadia shut down on January 18, 2023, so the opportunity is now historical.
What the February 2020 report actually said
The original February 5, 2020 report said GBTN appeared to support Stadia and might recruit Stadia players for future game-testing sessions. The follow-up published by 9to5Google on February 7, 2020 described a possible route for users to register their Stadia identity and controller, then wait for an invitation if a suitable test became available.
That evidence established a possible testing channel, not a Stadia-wide beta service. No named unreleased Stadia game, publisher, test date or Google announcement was identified. The contemporary coverage specifically cautioned that no Stadia beta test had yet been announced and that joining GBTN did not guarantee selection. The original framing is preserved in Android Headlines’ February 5 report.
| Question | What was established in 2020 |
|---|---|
| Was Stadia listed as a possible platform? | Reports indicated that GBTN had added Stadia support. |
| Was a Google-run beta program announced? | No. |
| Was a specific game identified? | No game or test date was publicly named. |
| Did registration guarantee access? | No. Selection depended on future invitations and test requirements. |
What GBTN was
GBTN—the Global Beta Testing Network—is an independent player-research and game-testing service, not a Google subsidiary. Its own site, playgbtn.com, describes sessions in which participants play pre-release games, provide detailed feedback and may be paid for their time.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
GBTN’s published participation requirements include:
- being at least 18 years old;
- signing a nondisclosure agreement;
- following the session’s instructions;
- submitting the requested feedback; and
- understanding that participation is not employment.
Any compensation would have depended on the individual session. The available information does not establish a standard payment amount, recurring income or payment for simply creating an account.
How a Stadia user could potentially participate
The reported process was a GBTN registration workflow, not a menu in the Stadia app or a Google Account setting:
- Create or register for an account at GBTN.
- Add the user’s Stadia name or account identifier to the profile.
- Mark Stadia and the Stadia Controller among the platforms and equipment available.
- Wait for an email invitation to a compatible session.
- Read and accept that test’s access, scheduling and confidentiality terms.
- Play the assigned build or session and provide feedback in the required format.
Being listed as a Stadia player expressed interest; it did not enroll someone in a particular beta. Tests could filter applicants by location, hardware, demographics, experience or availability, and a full or canceled session would produce no invitation.

Why cloud gaming could help beta testing
Stadia’s server-delivered model offered practical advantages for a controlled playtest:
- testers would not need to download a large build;
- developers could update a centrally hosted version quickly;
- access could be limited to invited accounts;
- the same server environment could be used across supported devices; and
- test access could be revoked without distributing local files.
Cloud testing also introduces trade-offs. A player’s connection and latency can affect the result, making it harder to separate a game defect from a streaming problem. Testers have less access to local files, graphics settings, mods and conventional diagnostic tools. A Stadia result would not automatically represent performance on a console or a locally installed PC.
Google later documented a developer-facing Stadia feature called Channels for playtests and closed betas. Its 2021 explanation says partners could control access and push updated builds through the cloud: Google’s Channels overview. That is useful context for why Stadia was technically suitable, but it does not prove that Channels powered the GBTN possibility reported in February 2020.
What a participant should not have assumed
An invitation was not guaranteed
GBTN registration was an expression of interest. No invitation could mean that no compatible session existed, the test was full, the applicant did not match its criteria or the project changed.

A beta build was not a finished game
A session might be short, unstable, incomplete or limited to a particular region, device and time window. A publisher could change or cancel it without notice.
NDA terms could restrict sharing
A nondisclosure agreement can prohibit screenshots, streaming, public comments and discussion of what was played. Participants needed to follow the individual agreement rather than treat a test as permission to publish footage.
Test access was not ownership
Any entitlement supplied for a session could be temporary or revocable. It should not be confused with purchasing or permanently receiving the game.
Payment was not guaranteed
GBTN said players might be paid for participation, but the sources do not establish a universal rate or guarantee that every registered user would receive a paid assignment.

Stadia’s availability changed after the report
When the story appeared, Stadia’s relatively limited availability reduced the immediate pool of eligible testers. The 9to5Google report noted that Google’s planned free Stadia Base tier could expand that audience.
Google subsequently broadened access in its launch countries and offered a two-month Stadia Pro trial in April 2020. Those later developments are documented in Google’s April 2020 announcement and its Stadia April update. They were subsequent context, not part of the February announcement.
What ultimately happened to Stadia
Google discontinued Stadia. The service remained available until January 18, 2023, when it shut down, as recorded in the official Stadia notice and Google’s shutdown FAQ. Consequently, no Stadia beta-testing opportunity can be joined today, and references to “future Stadia games” must be read as descriptions of the 2020 situation rather than current plans.
Bottom line for readers who encountered the headline
GBTN’s apparent Stadia listing made a plausible third-party testing route possible: an eligible adult could register, identify Stadia equipment and wait for a suitable invitation. But there was no confirmed Google-operated public beta program, no named game, no announced date and no guaranteed payment or selection. Stadia’s closure in 2023 ended the possibility entirely.
