Turn it on at Start > Settings > Gaming > Game Mode, then switch Game Mode to On. You can open the same page quickly with Win + R, entering ms-settings:gaming-gamemode, and pressing Enter. Game Mode may reduce competition from background activity, but it is not a guaranteed FPS upgrade. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so this advice applies to existing installations of the legacy operating system.
What Game Mode does
Windows Game Mode is a system-level scheduling and resource-prioritization feature. When a supported game is the foreground application, Windows can give it priority or exclusive access to certain hardware resources. The practical result depends on what else your PC is doing and how heavily those background tasks compete with the game. Microsoft describes the feature here: Game Mode documentation.
It is intended to improve consistency—such as reducing interruptions or uneven frame times—rather than increase the CPU or GPU’s underlying capability. Most Windows games use Game Mode automatically once the Windows setting is enabled; they generally do not need a separate in-game opt-in. The game must be in the foreground and have focus for the specified resource treatment to apply.
What it does not do
- It does not upgrade your CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage.
- It does not automatically lower graphics quality or change your resolution.
- It does not guarantee higher average FPS.
- It does not improve internet speed, routing, or server-side latency.
- It does not necessarily terminate every background process, notification, update, or antivirus scan.
Turn Game Mode on or off
Using Windows Settings
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Gaming.
- Select Game Mode in the left sidebar.
- Set Game Mode to On or Off.
- Close Settings and launch the game, or restart the game after changing the switch.
The standard path is Start > Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. Labels and layout can vary slightly by Windows 10 build, language, manufacturer customization, or device-management policy.

Does every game need its own setting?
No. The Windows Game Mode switch is a general system setting. The foreground game is the process Windows may prioritize; there is no requirement to enable a separate toggle for every title. Microsoft says Game Mode works by default for most Windows games.
That does not mean every game receives identical treatment. Older games, emulators, launchers, windowed applications, and software that Windows does not identify as expected may behave differently. If you minimize a game or another application takes focus, the foreground-resource behavior can change.

Game Mode, Game Bar, and Captures are different
| Feature | Purpose | Direct Settings command |
|---|---|---|
| Game Mode | Prioritizes the active game’s local system resources. | ms-settings:gaming-gamemode |
| Xbox Game Bar | Overlay for shortcuts, widgets, and controls opened with Win + G. |
ms-settings:gaming-gamebar |
| Game DVR/Captures | Recording, screenshots, and capture options. | ms-settings:gaming-gamedvr |
Game Bar is not required to enable Game Mode. Microsoft lists Game Bar, Captures, and Game Mode as separate gaming settings in its Windows Settings guide. Some older Windows 10 builds exposed Game Mode controls through Game Bar, but that interface was build-dependent rather than a universal procedure. A historical example is documented in Microsoft Q&A.

How much performance improvement should you expect?
There is no reliable percentage to promise. Microsoft says the benefit is related to the amount and impact of competing activity on the PC.
- On a powerful system with little background activity, you may notice no difference.
- On an older or heavily loaded PC, it may reduce contention and make frame pacing more consistent.
- If the GPU is already saturated, Game Mode cannot create additional graphics capacity.
- It will not by itself fix insufficient RAM, thermal throttling, serious driver faults, storage delays, or network lag.
For laptops, Game Mode does not replace connecting the charger, selecting an appropriate manufacturer power profile, or addressing overheating. Those are separate variables.

Test whether Game Mode helps your PC
Use a repeatable comparison instead of assuming that the toggle must help.
- Choose one game and a repeatable scene or built-in benchmark.
- Keep resolution, graphics quality, frame cap, display refresh rate, and power mode unchanged.
- Close unnecessary applications, but keep the test conditions the same for both runs.
- Record average FPS and, if available, 1% low FPS or frame-time behavior.
- Run the test at least twice with Game Mode off and at least twice with it on.
- Keep the setting enabled only if it improves consistency or addresses a specific problem.
Compare frame-time smoothness as well as the average. A small average-FPS change may matter less than persistent stutter, while a result that changes from run to run is not strong evidence.

The Game Mode page is missing
- Open Settings and search for Game Mode.
- Try
Win + Randms-settings:gaming-gamemode. - Confirm that the computer is running Windows 10, not Windows 11, whose gaming labels and features differ.
- Check whether the device is managed by a school, employer, or family administrator that restricts Settings.
Do not treat registry edits or third-party “Game Mode” utilities as the normal fix. They are unnecessary for the built-in switch and can make diagnosis more difficult. Windows 10 no longer receives ordinary free support or security updates after October 14, 2025; install pending updates only when they are still available for your particular support arrangement. Microsoft records the end-of-support date at Windows startup settings.

Game Mode is on but nothing changes
This is normal when the game is GPU-limited, the PC has ample unused resources, or background activity is minimal. Check graphics drivers from your GPU manufacturer, temperatures and throttling, available memory, laptop power state, and whether the game is using the intended discrete GPU. Adjust the game’s own graphics settings when the hardware limit is the problem.
Performance gets worse after enabling it
Turn Game Mode off using the same Settings path and repeat the same controlled test. Resource scheduling can interact differently with particular games, recording software, overlays, or drivers. If disabling it removes stutter, crashes, audio problems, or recording conflicts, leave it off.
Overlays and recording cause trouble
Xbox Game Bar, Game DVR/Captures, Discord overlays, GPU overlays, and monitoring tools consume resources independently of Game Mode. Disable or re-enable them one at a time so you can identify the conflicting feature instead of changing several variables together.

If Game Mode does not address the issue, investigate the actual bottleneck:
Quick Recap
- Install a current graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, synchronization clients, and other background applications.
- Use AC power and an appropriate laptop performance profile.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures for thermal throttling.
- Verify that a hybrid-graphics system is using the intended GPU.
- Change in-game graphics settings or frame caps to match the hardware.
- Disable problematic overlays individually.
- Consider migration to Windows 11 only after checking hardware compatibility and support requirements.
