Yes—on PS5 you can play music or podcasts over most compatible games without closing the game. Install Spotify or Apple Music, start playback, then use the Control Center’s Music card to control it while you play.

Install Spotify or Apple Music on PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, open Media.
- Select All Apps.
- Choose Spotify or Apple Music.
- Select Download.
- Launch the app and sign in or create an account, then complete the linking prompts.

Start music while you are already in a game
- Press the PS button once to open the Control Center.
- Select Music.
- Choose the installed service or a recently played item.
- Select a song, album, playlist, or podcast.
- Press the PS button to return to gameplay.
The active program appears as a playback card in the Control Center. Depending on the service and content, the card provides pause, resume, skip, seek, and other playback controls. PlayStation documents this workflow in its PS5 music and podcasts guide.
Control playback without leaving the game
Press the PS button to open the Control Center, select the Now Playing or music card, and use the displayed controls. Press the PS button again when you are finished.
For a faster route, press the PS button twice while in a game or app. PS5 returns to the most recent card, although the card shown depends on what you opened most recently.
Switch between Spotify and Apple Music
- Press the PS button.
- Select Music.
- Choose Music sources.
- Select the installed service.
- Pick the content you want to play.
Music sources may not appear until at least one supported app has been installed and linked.

Balance music with game audio
There is no universally documented PS5 menu path for a dedicated game-versus-music mixer. Use the controls that are actually available on your system:
- Adjust the music service’s volume on its Control Center card if a volume control is shown.
- Open the game’s own Settings > Audio menu and lower or disable Music or Soundtrack.
- Keep sound effects and dialogue enabled if you still want gameplay cues and story audio.
- Check your headset, TV, or soundbar volume. General PS5 output options are under Settings > Sound > Audio Output; that area is not a guaranteed game/music mixer.
Spotify specifically recommends turning off a game’s in-game music when the title allows it, so two full-volume soundtracks do not compete.

Spotify is the better fit if you already use its playlists or want documented phone control. Apple Music is the practical choice if your library and subscription are already in Apple’s ecosystem. PlayStation’s announcement also describes Apple Music recommendations, libraries, curated playlists, and gaming-focused content; current app behavior can vary by region and account.
Can you stream music in every PS5 game?
Do not assume every title will allow it. PlayStation describes background playback during PS5 gameplay, while Spotify explicitly limits its wording to compatible PS5 and PS4 games. A game may disable or restrict background audio, take control of playback, or rely heavily on licensed music, rhythm mechanics, or story audio. If music stops only when one particular title launches, compatibility is a likely explanation, although app, account, network, and regional problems can produce similar symptoms.

Troubleshoot missing music or playback
The Music card or service is missing
- Confirm the app is installed under Media > All Apps.
- Open the app and finish account linking.
- Start a song or podcast inside the app before returning to the game.
- Press the PS button and check Music or the active media card.
- Restart the app, then restart the PS5 if the card is still absent.
- Check whether the service is offered in your country or region.
The game soundtrack is still playing
Open that title’s audio settings and reduce or disable its music or soundtrack slider. Setting names differ by game; this is not a universal PS5 option.
Music stops when a game starts
Check whether the title supports background music. If it does, verify that the app is linked, the account is active, and the PS5 remains online. The official documentation does not identify a single recovery step that fixes every title.
Music is too loud or too quiet
Adjust the media card’s volume if available, the game’s music/effects/dialogue sliders, and the physical volume on your output device. Avoid treating Settings > Sound > Audio Output as a guaranteed independent music mixer.
Unlink and relink Spotify
For Spotify, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services > Spotify > Unlink Account, then launch Spotify and link it again.

Use your phone to control Spotify
Spotify Connect lets the Spotify app on a phone or tablet control playback on the PS5. It is useful for searching a large playlist or changing tracks without repeatedly opening the Control Center. This feature is documented for Spotify; do not assume the same control method works with Apple Music.

The PS5 Music card should not be confused with every media app available on the console. PlayStation’s current native background-music documentation identifies Spotify and Apple Music; it does not establish YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, or another service as an integrated Music-card option.
If your service is unavailable, or a game blocks background playback, use a phone, tablet, computer, separate speaker, or an audio-mixing setup. These alternatives can provide independent volume control, but phone playback alone does not send arbitrary service audio into the PS5. Extra hardware also cannot make a game support background music.
Account, region, and subscription notes
Streaming requires internet access and a PSN account, plus the relevant music-service account. Service catalogs, app availability, and subscription requirements vary by country and account type. Current subscription prices are not included here because they change; check the official Spotify or Apple Music pages for your region.
