You cannot normally pair an ordinary Bluetooth speaker directly with an Xbox Series X or Series S. The consoles send audio through HDMI and use Xbox Wireless for supported accessories, rather than offering a standard Bluetooth-audio pairing menu. Instead, route Xbox sound through your TV or monitor, add a Bluetooth transmitter, or use wired or Xbox-compatible wireless audio.
Microsoft Community guidance says Xbox does not support generic Bluetooth pairing, while Xbox lists a dedicated Xbox Wireless radio for accessories: Microsoft Community and Xbox Series S specifications.
Why direct Bluetooth pairing does not work
A Bluetooth speaker being compatible with phones does not make it compatible with an Xbox Series console. Xbox Series X|S has no normal user-facing process for pairing generic Bluetooth audio devices. Plugging an arbitrary USB Bluetooth dongle into one of the console’s USB ports is not a guaranteed or generally supported audio solution.
The Xbox Wireless Headset illustrates the distinction: it connects to Xbox using Xbox Wireless and uses Bluetooth separately for compatible PCs and mobile devices. Its Bluetooth capability should not be interpreted as Bluetooth-speaker support on the console (official product page).

Choose the connection that matches your equipment
| Your equipment or priority | Best route | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| TV with Bluetooth audio output | Pair the speaker to the TV | Possible Bluetooth delay; usually no chat microphone |
| TV or monitor with 3.5-mm output | Use wired speakers, or attach a Bluetooth transmitter | Transmitter adds power and another pairing step |
| Monitor with HDMI only | HDMI audio extractor plus Bluetooth transmitter | Extractor must preserve your video features |
| You sit close to the controller | Connect a powered speaker or transmitter to the controller’s 3.5-mm jack | Cable and controller battery limitations |
| Wireless audio, low latency, or voice chat | Xbox-compatible wireless headset | Private listening rather than room-filling sound |
Before buying anything, check whether your display has Bluetooth audio output, a headphone/auxiliary jack, optical output, or only HDMI. A speaker’s USB-C port may be charging-only, and HDMI or USB on a monitor does not automatically provide a usable audio path. Also distinguish the Xbox Series S from the older Xbox One S; they are different consoles with different rear-panel features.
Method 1: Pair the speaker with a Bluetooth-capable TV
This is usually the simplest option because the Xbox already sends picture and sound to the television over HDMI.
- Turn on the Xbox and speaker.
- Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode. Disconnect it from a phone or other device if necessary.
- Open the TV’s Settings and find Sound, Audio Output, Bluetooth Speaker, or Bluetooth Devices.
- Select the speaker and set it as the TV’s audio output.
- Start a game and test volume, delay, and whether the Xbox picture remains in the desired game mode.
Menu names vary by television manufacturer and firmware. The TV must support Bluetooth audio transmission, not merely Bluetooth input for a remote or keyboard. Some televisions disable their other outputs when Bluetooth audio is selected.

What to expect
- Bluetooth buffering can make sound visibly late, especially in rhythm games, racing games, shooters, and menu navigation.
- A standalone speaker normally provides playback only; it is not a complete Xbox party-chat microphone.
- Bluetooth 5.x by itself does not guarantee low latency. Codec, buffering, TV processing, transmitter, and speaker design all matter.
Method 2: Use a display’s 3.5-mm output
If the TV or monitor has a headphone or auxiliary output, you can avoid an HDMI extractor.
- Connect the Xbox to the display by HDMI.
- For wired audio, connect a powered speaker directly to the display’s 3.5-mm output.
- For wireless audio, connect a Bluetooth transmitter to that output and power it.
- Put the transmitter and speaker into pairing mode, then select the transmitter on the speaker.
- Set the display to its headphone or analog output if it has a separate audio-output setting.
A normal Bluetooth speaker is a receiver. It needs a transmitter sending audio from the display; buying another Bluetooth receiver will not solve this connection.
Method 3: Add an HDMI audio extractor
An extractor is useful when a monitor has no audio jack and the TV cannot transmit Bluetooth. It separates audio from the HDMI signal while passing video to the display.

Xbox HDMI output → extractor HDMI input
extractor HDMI output → TV or monitor
extractor 3.5-mm/RCA/optical output → Bluetooth transmitter
Bluetooth transmitter → Bluetooth speaker
- Connect the Xbox to the extractor’s HDMI input.
- Connect the extractor’s HDMI output to the display.
- Connect its analog or optical audio output to a Bluetooth transmitter.
- Power the extractor and transmitter as required.
- Pair the transmitter with the speaker.
- Set the Xbox or extractor to stereo PCM as the initial audio format.
- Test resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, HDCP, and audio delay.
Check video pass-through before buying
An extractor that handles basic 1080p may disrupt 4K, 120 Hz, HDR10, Dolby Vision, VRR, or HDCP. Check the complete specification for the exact features your Xbox and display use; an “HDMI 2.1” label alone does not prove that every feature passes through. If the picture disappears, temporarily disable 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz to identify a bandwidth or compatibility problem.
Method 4: Connect audio to the controller
Xbox controllers include a 3.5-mm jack for compatible wired audio accessories. Xbox documents controller-connected headsets and the Xbox Stereo Headset here: Xbox gaming headsets and Xbox Stereo Headset.
Recommended Free Tools
- Plug a powered speaker’s 3.5-mm cable into the controller.
- Press the Xbox button and open the Audio & music panel.
- Adjust headset volume if the control is available, then test game audio.
This can work for a small powered speaker, but the controller may not power a large passive speaker. The cable limits movement and can increase controller battery use. A Bluetooth transmitter connected to the jack is possible, but it adds a battery-powered device, may introduce delay, and should not be assumed to support microphone return. Microsoft Community guidance discusses wired speakers through the controller while noting the cable limitation: community guidance.

- 【One-Cable Plug & Play】 USB computer speakers use one USB-A/C cable for audio and power—no AUX cable or driver setup. (Please note: Wired mode requires a USB port that supports digital audio output. Some monitors, PlayStation, and Xbox devices may not support direct USB audio.)

- 【6 RGB Lighting Effects】 Six effects and seven colors let these RGB computer speakers enhance your desktop setup.
- 【Wide Compatibility】 These laptop speakers support USB audio on compatible PCs and tablets, plus Bluetooth on phones.
Xbox audio settings and format choices
For a basic Bluetooth transmitter, uncompressed stereo or stereo PCM is the safest starting point. Bluetooth speakers and many transmitters do not decode Dolby or DTS multichannel formats. Xbox Series S specifications list support for formats including LPCM up to 7.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, and Dolby TrueHD with Atmos, but the usable format depends on the game, display, receiver, and selected settings (Xbox specifications).
When the speaker is paired to the TV, the TV generally controls output selection and volume. The Xbox Audio & music panel is most useful for controller-connected headsets; it is not a universal control panel for every TV Bluetooth device.

No sound
- Confirm game audio works through the TV or monitor first.
- Make sure the speaker is powered and disconnected from another device.
- Verify that the TV is set to Bluetooth audio output.
- Check that the added device is a transmitter, not a receiver.
- Select stereo PCM or uncompressed stereo.
- Re-enter pairing mode, move devices closer, and disconnect other Bluetooth equipment.
- If using the controller, test a wired headset in the same jack.
Picture works but extractor audio does not
- Check HDMI direction: Xbox to extractor input, extractor output to display.
- Try the extractor’s 3.5-mm output instead of optical.
- Check its audio-mode switch and confirm the transmitter accepts the output.
- Temporarily reduce resolution, HDR, or refresh rate to isolate pass-through problems.
Audio is delayed
Try wired display or controller audio, enable low-latency modes on both devices when available, and disable extra TV audio processing. For competitive play, an Xbox-compatible wireless headset is generally a more dependable choice than a Bluetooth speaker.

- 【OLED Display and Effortless Device Information Access】 The screen simplifies pairing the Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter with all Bluetooth headphones, earbuds. It can intuitively display volume, codec format, mic status, and paired Bluetooth devices.⚠️ Important Pairing Tip:Pairing requires holding both Vol+ & Vol- simultaneously until "Searching" appears.
- 【aptX Low Latency】The codec ensures synchronized audio, stepping you into the world of wireless gaming with our Xbox One Bluetooth adapter. Low latency requires your headphones to also support this technology.
- 【Wide Compatibility】The Xbox audio adapter is designed for Xbox One, Series X, Series S, and Elite Series 2 Wireless Controllers with 3.5mm audio jack. It does not support the first-generation Xbox controller and the Elite 1 controller.
- 【Upgraded Tech】Powered directly by the controller, the Xbox headset adapter delivers low energy consumption. It further conserves power by automatically dimming the screen after 10 seconds of inactivity. This design is enhanced by two indicator lights, giving quick feedback on the adapter and mic status.
- 【Note】Even after the transmitter is powered off, the mic remains active when the mute switch is leftward. Sliding it right activates the mute indicator light, disabling the mic. The mic can function independently without paired headphones. Additionally, the adapter doesn't support the microphone of Bluetooth headhones.
Party chat is missing
Playback and two-way chat are separate. A speaker connected through a TV or transmitter should not be treated as an Xbox headset. Use a supported wired or Xbox Wireless headset when microphone and party-chat support matter.
When a headset or wired speaker is the better answer
Xbox Wireless Headset
The Xbox Wireless Headset is designed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One and uses Xbox Wireless for the console. Its Bluetooth connection is for compatible PCs and mobile devices, not generic Bluetooth pairing from the Xbox console (official product page). It is the lowest-friction choice when wireless listening, low delay, or chat is more important than room-filling sound.
Xbox Stereo Headset
The wired Xbox Stereo Headset connects to the controller’s 3.5-mm jack and avoids Bluetooth codec delay (official product page). It is unsuitable if you specifically need a room speaker or cable-free listening.
Powered wired speakers
If your display has a 3.5-mm output and the speaker can sit nearby, powered wired speakers are often the simplest, lowest-latency room-audio solution. They avoid pairing, charging a transmitter, and Bluetooth buffering.
