Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: The Radeon RX 7900 XT could outperform the GeForce RTX 4080 in selected native-rasterization tests, but it was never a general performance winner. The RTX 4080 was substantially faster in ray tracing and held important advantages in DLSS, Frame Generation, efficiency and CUDA-oriented software. The RX 7900 XT made the most sense when it was meaningfully cheaper and your games favored conventional raster rendering.
What the original benchmark tease actually meant
Before the RX 7900 XT launched on December 13, 2022, early charts and AMD’s launch material suggested performance competitive with, and occasionally above, the RTX 4080. That evidence did not establish that AMD’s card was faster overall.
AMD’s own presentation used selected games and internal testing, so its figures were claims from the manufacturer rather than independent verification. The useful interpretation was narrower: the RX 7900 XT had a credible chance to beat the RTX 4080 in particular rasterized games. It did not prove a universal lead across every engine, resolution or rendering mode. See AMD’s launch data and footnotes at AMD’s RX 7900-series announcement.
Independent launch reviews subsequently placed the cards in the same broad class in some raster workloads, while showing a clear RTX 4080 advantage once ray tracing and NVIDIA’s software features entered the test. Tom’s Hardware’s reviews of the RX 7900 XT/XTX and RTX 4080 are a useful record of that split.

The RX 7900 XT’s wider 320-bit bus and 20GB of VRAM provide more capacity than the RTX 4080, but memory size does not determine frame rate by itself. The power figures also need a date attached: AMD initially announced 300W and later listed 315W on product and partner material. Specifications and the RX 7900 XT’s 750W recommended PSU are documented on AMD’s product page, while NVIDIA’s feature reference is at the RTX 4080 family page.
Where the RX 7900 XT could win
Native rasterized games
The strongest RX 7900 XT case was conventional rendering with ray tracing disabled and no generated frames. Game engines that favored AMD’s architecture could put the card ahead, particularly at 1440p and 4K where the GPU rather than the processor usually limits performance.

Game-to-game variation
RTX 4080 testing showed unusually wide results between titles. In Tom’s Hardware’s 1440p suite, the RTX 4080 was slower than an AMD card in Microsoft Flight Simulator but dramatically faster in Total War: Warhammer 3. Those outliers demonstrate how a small, favorable game list can make “faster than RTX 4080” technically true without making it a buying conclusion. Review details are available in the 1440p results and 1080p results.
CPU-limited esports scenarios
At 1080p with very high refresh targets, a fast CPU can become the bottleneck. That compresses the gap between expensive GPUs and can make either card appear tied. Such a result says more about the test platform and game than about a universal GPU ranking.

Where the RTX 4080 pulled ahead
Ray tracing and path tracing
RDNA 3 improved AMD’s ray-tracing hardware, but independent testing still put the RX 7900 XT behind NVIDIA in DXR workloads. The gap becomes more consequential in demanding effects-heavy games and path-traced modes. Tom’s Hardware discusses the architectural and measured difference in its RX 7900-series review.
DLSS and Frame Generation
The RTX 4080 supports DLSS image reconstruction and DLSS 3 Frame Generation in compatible software. These are separate test categories from native rendering: a chart must state whether DLSS, AMD FSR or Frame Generation was enabled. Comparing native AMD output with an RTX result produced using DLSS or generated frames is not an apples-to-apples performance claim.

Efficiency and software support
Tom’s Hardware’s power testing placed the RTX 4080 among the more efficient high-end cards in that test suite; that is a measured review result, not a guarantee for every board or workload. NVIDIA also offers the broader CUDA ecosystem and generally stronger support in applications such as Blender and many AI tools. See the review’s power testing.
Why benchmark rankings change
- Rendering mode: Rasterization, native ray tracing, upscaled ray tracing and frame generation measure different things.
- Resolution: 1080p can be CPU-limited; 4K usually exposes GPU architectural differences.
- Engine and API: DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and Vulkan workloads can favor different architectures.
- Test platform: CPU, memory speed, Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory and game patches affect results.
- Driver version: Launch reviews and later retests may not be directly comparable. AMD continues to publish RX 7900 XT drivers, including releases on its support page.
- Metric: Average FPS, one-percent lows and frame-time consistency can produce different winners.
A defensible comparison identifies the exact game list, preset, resolution, ray-tracing status, upscaler, Frame Generation setting, driver versions and test hardware. Results from separate reviews should not be combined into a single precise percentage unless those conditions match.

What 20GB of VRAM changes
The RX 7900 XT has 20GB of GDDR6 versus 16GB on the RTX 4080. The extra capacity can provide headroom for high-resolution texture packs, heavily modded games and some large professional or compute workloads. It may help a card remain comfortable as memory demands rise, but it is not a promise of longer life and does not overcome weaker ray-tracing or software performance. A compute-limited game can still run faster on the RTX 4080 while using less memory.
Launch, pricing and the post-launch picture
- November 2022: NVIDIA launched the RTX 4080; AMD revealed RX 7900-series pricing and specifications on November 3.
- December 13, 2022: The RX 7900 XT launched at $899.
- December 2022: Independent reviews established that the XT was competitive in selected raster tests but not a consistent RTX 4080 killer.
- 2023: Price cuts and driver work improved the XT’s value. TechSpot later reported U.S. cards around $750–$800 at the time of its re-review, while AMD sales material cited an $849 positioning.
- 2024 onward: Newer GPU generations changed the market context.
The historical figures above are not August 2026 prices. The official AMD product page provides a retailer link but no dependable live street price; its retailer directory confirms channels rather than stock or price. TechSpot’s launch and re-review provide the historical value context at launch and later testing. In 2026, compare the actual price, warranty and performance with current-generation alternatives instead of reusing the 2022 MSRP.
Which card fits which buyer?
| Buyer or workload | More suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Native-raster gamer buying at a substantial discount | RX 7900 XT | Can approach or exceed RTX 4080 performance in selected games and offers 20GB of VRAM. |
| Ray-tracing or path-tracing enthusiast | RTX 4080 | Stronger DXR performance and a more mature upscaling/frame-generation feature set. |
| DLSS-dependent player | RTX 4080 | DLSS and supported Frame Generation are part of the intended experience. |
| CUDA, Blender or AI workflow | RTX 4080 | CUDA and broader application support reduce compatibility risk. |
| 4K texture-heavy mod user | RX 7900 XT | Its 20GB framebuffer can offer useful capacity headroom. |
| High-refresh DisplayPort 2.1 monitor owner | RX 7900 XT, if the monitor supports it | DisplayPort 2.1 is a hardware advantage over the reference RTX 4080’s DisplayPort 1.4a. |
| 1080p high-refresh buyer | Usually neither is necessary | CPU limits can erase much of the difference; a cheaper GPU may be better value. |
| Used-market shopper | Either, after inspection | Condition, warranty, cooler, coil whine and prior mining use matter more than launch charts. |
For the RX 7900 XT, AMD recommends a minimum 750W power supply. Evaluate the unit’s quality, age and connectors, not just its printed wattage. A new card priced close to newer models with better ray tracing or upscaling is difficult to justify; a discounted or warrantied used card can change that calculation.
Verdict
The headline was plausible but narrowly framed. The RX 7900 XT could be faster than the RTX 4080 in isolated, native-rasterized game tests, especially where AMD’s architecture matched the engine. Across a broad high-end workload, the RTX 4080 was the safer all-round performer because it combined competitive raster results with clearly stronger ray tracing, DLSS and Frame Generation, better efficiency in the cited testing, and wider creator-software support. Treat the XT as a value-dependent raster card—not as a general RTX 4080 replacement—and do not make a 2026 purchase from 2022 launch benchmarks alone.
