The Xbox Series X|S “major problem” is not a hardware defect. It is the electricity used by its high-power standby mode—called Instant-On in launch-era coverage and generally Sleep today—while the console appears to be off. For most owners, the fix is simple: open Settings → General → Power options and select Shutdown (energy saving).
This setting keeps normal gameplay and performance intact, while using far less off-state power. The trade-off is a slightly longer startup and no remote wake while the console is shut down.
What the headline is actually about
Early Xbox Series X|S coverage criticized Instant-On, a standby mode designed to resume quickly and keep connected functions available. Current Xbox software generally calls the equivalent mode Sleep. The complaint was about standby electricity consumption, not reliability, overheating or damage.
Quick Resume is separate. It preserves supported games in suspended states so they can resume quickly. Changing the power mode does not make Quick Resume itself disappear; the headline’s energy issue concerns what the console does while powered down or in standby. Ars Technica’s launch-era report distinguishes the two features.

- Expanded Ports – Add four USB 3.2 ports to your Xbox console to connect more PowerA Wired Controllers and other compatible accessories. Connects to any USB-A port on the console.
- USB 3.2 – Transfer data at speeds of up to 5Gbps
- Weighted Base – Built-in weights and rubber feet keep the USB Hub securely positioned and prevent unwanted movement
- AC Powered – Includes an 8.2 ft. 2.1 A AC Adapter and provides each port with 900mA of power

The easy fix: choose Shutdown (energy saving)
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open General.
- Select Power options.
- Choose Shutdown (energy saving).
Older system software may call this Energy saving. If you see Sleep, that is the newer name for the higher-power Instant-On-style mode. Menu wording can vary by system update and language, but the setting is under Settings → General → Power options. Microsoft says the choice can be changed at any time: Xbox sustainability update.
Why Instant-On drew criticism
In early testing cited by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Instant-On standby used roughly 9–10 watts, while Energy Saver used less than 1 watt. The faster mode shortened startup by about 10–15 seconds. Those are historical measurements, not a guaranteed 2026 reading for every Series X, Series S, firmware version or household setup. NRDC said its measurements were primarily based on Series S and that Series X could use somewhat more standby power. NRDC’s explanation provides the testing context.

- Charges and displays Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One Wireless Controllers*
- Includes two 1100 mAh rechargeable batteries and four battery doors
- Snap-down charging design with color change LED indicator
- Powered by AC adapter to keep USB ports free
NRDC also modeled almost 4 billion kilowatt-hours of U.S. consumption through the end of 2025 if large numbers of owners kept the higher-power option. That was a projection based on sales and user-behavior assumptions, not a meter reading from every Xbox. Microsoft later described Shutdown/Energy Saver as using up to 20 times less power while off than Sleep, with actual results varying by model, updates, network activity and measurement conditions: Microsoft’s 2023 announcement.
What Shutdown (energy saving) still does
Energy Saver does not reduce in-game performance or change how games run when the console is on. With automatic updates enabled, Microsoft says the console can wake during a maintenance window, check for updates, download them when available and shut down again. It is not an instant, always-connected download state, and timing depends on settings, internet access, account configuration, region and current Xbox software. See Microsoft’s update guidance in its 2022 sustainability update and 2023 sustainability update.

Sleep versus Shutdown: the practical trade-off
| Power mode | Startup | Off-state power | Updates | Remote wake | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep (formerly Instant-On) | Faster; launch-era reporting found roughly 10–15 seconds saved | Higher; early testing found about 9–10 W | More continuously connected | Supported when configured and connected | Frequent remote play, remote wake or instant-ready use |
| Shutdown (energy saving) (formerly Energy saving) | Slower cold start | Much lower; early testing found under 1 W | Can check and download during a maintenance window when automatic updates are enabled | Not supported while shut down | Most owners who prioritize lower consumption |
Microsoft’s current guidance specifically says remote wake is unavailable while the console is shut down. Remote features can still be used after the console is powered on; if your routine depends on waking it from the Xbox app or remote play, Sleep may be worth the additional standby draw. Microsoft documents the limitation here.
Is the 2021 warning still relevant in 2026?
The original BGR article was published on January 18, 2021, when launch-era labels and defaults shaped the discussion: BGR’s original article. Microsoft subsequently made Energy Saver the default initial-setup choice during its 2022–2023 sustainability rollout and updated the terminology and update behavior. Therefore, do not assume a current console is still configured like a launch model, and do not search for a literal “Instant-On” label.

Regional defaults also differed historically. NRDC said European consoles shipped with Energy Saver selected to meet local efficiency requirements; that historical U.S./European distinction should not be generalized to every market or today’s software.
Choose the setting that matches your use
Shutdown/Energy Saver is the sensible default when:
- You use the console occasionally.
- Lower electricity consumption matters more than the fastest startup.
- You do not need remote wake.
- You are comfortable with updates being handled during maintenance windows.
Keep Sleep enabled when:
- You regularly wake the Xbox remotely.
- Remote-play workflows depend on the console being reachable from standby.
- You value an always-ready experience enough to accept higher standby use.
Troubleshooting after changing the mode
Updates are not appearing
- Confirm automatic updates are enabled.
- Leave the console connected to power and the internet.
- Check that the game or app is installed locally and that storage space is available.
- Allow for maintenance-window timing or a temporary Xbox service outage.
Remote play no longer wakes the console
This is normally the expected Shutdown trade-off, not a hardware fault. Switch back to Sleep if remote wake is essential, or turn the console on manually before starting a remote session.

The console is occasionally warm or active after shutdown
Energy Saver can briefly wake the system for maintenance or updates. Occasional activity alone does not indicate a defect.
You cannot find “Instant-On”
Look under Settings → General → Power options for Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving). Names vary with system software and localization.
