The ASUS ROG Strix Flare II Animate is still a capable, low-latency full-size gaming keyboard, but its 312-LED AniMe Matrix display—not its gaming performance—is what makes it distinctive. Consider it if you want a wired 100% layout, dedicated media controls and animated desk lighting, and find a verified unit at a substantial discount. For most buyers, its bulky footprint, wired-only connection and Armoury Crate dependence make a newer wireless keyboard the more practical choice.
What the Flare II Animate offers
This is a wired, 100% mechanical keyboard with a numpad, per-key RGB, front underglow, dedicated media controls, a volume wheel and ASUS’s AniMe Matrix display. The US specifications list ROG NX Red, Brown and Blue switch options, a USB 2.0 pass-through port and a detachable wrist rest. ASUS specifies Windows 10 and Armoury Crate; the hardware can work as a basic keyboard on other systems, but full configuration is Windows-oriented.

Is the size practical for your desk?
The standard 100% layout preserves the numpad, while the media buttons and wheel keep common controls close at hand. ASUS supplies a magnetic detachable wrist rest; RTINGS describes the keyboard as well-built and comfortable with it attached. The trade-off is space: the 435mm-wide keyboard already occupies a broad area, and the 85mm-deep rest extends the setup toward you. Leave room for cable routing and your mouse sweep, especially on a narrow desk.
#1 Best Overall
- TKL Size with Full-Size Functionality and Num Pad: Experience a compact, space-saving design that's only 1 cm wider than a standard 80 percent keyboard, while still retaining the keys and number pad you would have in a 96 percent keyboard.
- Versatile Tri-Mode Connectivity: Seamlessly connect via Bluetooth (supporting up to 3 devices), low-latency 2.4GHz wireless with ROG SpeedNova technology, or a reliable USB wired connection. Compatible with both PC and Mac, and boasts an exceptional battery life of up to 1,500 hours in 2.4GHz wireless mode.
- Enhanced Acoustics: Integrated sound-dampening foam and switch-dampening pads effectively absorb pinging noises and echoes, resulting in improved keystroke acoustics.
- Hot Swappable, Pre-Lubed Mechanical Switches: Customize your typing experience with your choice of ROG NX Snow linear switches (for smooth, thocky keystrokes) or ROG NX Storm clicky switches (for crisp, tactile keystrokes). Both switch types are factory-lubricated for enhanced stability and optimized acoustics. Features per-key RGB lighting.
- Optimized for Gaming, Streaming, and Daily Work: Pre-programmed hotkeys (F1-F5) provide convenient control over the Xbox Game Bar and recording functions. A multi-function wheel allows for intuitive media and lighting adjustments. All keys are fully macro-programmable for advanced customization.
TechRadar also criticized the bulky design and long cable. The 2m braided lead is useful when the PC is farther away, but it adds cable-management work. ASUS’s product overview shows the design and lighting features.
What does the AniMe Matrix display do?
The display uses 312 programmable mini-LEDs for custom images and animations, audio visualizations and system-style indicators. In Armoury Crate, the AniMe Matrix controls let you choose content and set brightness from 0 to 100. It is the keyboard’s standout customization feature, making the board more personal than one with RGB lighting alone.
It is also an aesthetic extra, not a gaming tool: it does not improve typing, accuracy or latency. Its small, low-resolution display will appeal most to people who enjoy animated hardware on their desk. TechRadar found the animations underwhelming for the cost, while Digital Trends found the customization straightforward once the relevant Armoury Crate controls were located. If you will leave it off or use only standard lighting, the feature adds little practical value.

Which switch should you choose?
ROG NX Red
Red switches are linear, with no tactile bump or click. They suit users who want a smooth keypress for gaming or prefer to avoid click noise, though the sound of a keyboard also depends on the keycaps, desk and typing style.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ROG NX Brown
Brown switches provide tactile feedback without the pronounced click of Blue switches. They are a reasonable starting point for mixed gaming and typing if you want feedback but not a deliberately loud keystroke.
ROG NX Blue
Blue switches have an audible click and distinct feedback. Choose them if you enjoy that sound and feel; they are a poor fit for many shared rooms or quiet offices.
Rank #3
- ROG RX optical switches: Pre-lubed RX switches feature centralized lighting and provide consistent wobble-free keystrokes with near-zero debounce delay
- IP57-rated: Waterproof and dust resistant for long-lasting durability
- Hotkeys: F1–F5 keys are pre-programmed as hotkeys for Xbox Game Bar and recording
- Intuitive controls: Multifunction button and three-way knob for media playback, volume, and keyboard lighting
- Sound-dampening foam: Integrated foam absorbs pinging noises and echoes for improved acoustics
RTINGS rated the keyboard’s typing quality positively, but switch feel is personal. ASUS lists the three ROG NX options on its US page; do not assume every regional SKU has the same switches.
Is it really hot-swappable?
ASUS’s documentation conflicts, so do not buy this keyboard on the assumption that it offers the conventional socketed hot-swap experience. ASUS product copy describes swappable ROG NX or Cherry MX switches, and RTINGS describes its tested unit as having a hot-swappable PCB. However, ASUS’s support FAQ says the keyboard does not support hot-swappable keys. The keyboard includes a switch puller, but that does not settle whether a particular unit has sockets designed for convenient replacement.
Before buying for switch modifications, confirm the exact revision and SKU with ASUS or the seller. Also check that replacement switches are available. “Removable” and “hot-swappable” are not interchangeable promises.
How good is it for gaming, and does 8,000Hz matter?
RTINGS measured exceptionally low latency and considers the keyboard a strong gaming performer. ASUS advertises polling up to 8,000Hz: that means a nominal report interval of 0.125ms, compared with 1ms at 1,000Hz. Those are polling intervals, not total end-to-end input latency.
The higher rate can reduce the theoretical wait for a report, but it is unlikely to transform play for most people. ASUS says ordinary users are generally well served by 1,000Hz; higher rates are aimed more at latency-sensitive competitive play. Any keyboard polling advantage sits alongside other sources of delay, including the game, display and USB stack. Choose the board for its overall features rather than the polling-rate number alone.
All keys can be programmed, and dedicated media controls are convenient during play. The USB pass-through can provide a nearby connection for another device, but it does not change the keyboard’s wired-only nature.

Best Value
- Full-Size Premium Wired Keyboard: The ROG Strix Scope II X is a 100% keyboard with a number pad and wired USB-C connectivity. The aluminum top plate and PBT doubleshot keycaps give it a weighty, durable presence while keeping each key resistant to wear
- Hot Swappable, Pre-Lubed Mechanical Switches V2: Create your own custom aesthetics and typing experience with your choice of ROG NX Snow linear switches (for smooth, thocky keystrokes) or ROG NX Storm clicky switches (for crisp, tactile keystrokes)
- ROG NX V2 Switches: These switches retain the dust-proof, wall-stem design of the original V1 switches while adding an LED lens for enhanced RGB illumination
- Enhanced Acoustics: Integrated sound-dampening foam and switch-dampening pads effectively absorb pinging noises and echoes, resulting in improved keystroke acoustics
- Optimized for Gaming, Streaming, and Daily Work: Pre-programmed hotkeys (F1-F5) for control over Xbox Game Bar and recording functions. A multi-function wheel allows for intuitive media and lighting adjustments. All keys are fully macro-programmable
What does Armoury Crate control?
Armoury Crate provides the keyboard’s deeper configuration: key remapping, macros, media-button behavior, lighting, polling rate, AniMe Matrix content, profiles and firmware updates. ASUS’s support instructions place settings on the keyboard device page and firmware updates in the device’s firmware-update option; the keyboard restarts during an update.
The breadth is useful if you want per-key control and Aura Sync integration. The cost is dependence on ASUS software for the signature features. RTINGS notes that the companion software is Windows-only; settings saved on the keyboard can remain usable on Mac or Linux after configuration, but full customization is not equally supported there. If you avoid peripheral suites or do not use Windows, the display and other advanced controls are less convenient.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Wired only: there is no Bluetooth or 2.4GHz wireless option.
- Large footprint: the full-size board and detachable rest take substantial desk depth and mouse space.
- Software dependence: the Matrix and deeper customization rely on Armoury Crate.
- Unsettled switch-replacement claims: ASUS’s product and support materials disagree about hot-swapping.
- Display and firmware complexity: the Matrix adds another electronic feature to configure and maintain. Community posts describe display or firmware problems, but they do not establish a failure rate; keep warranty coverage and avoid unsupported firmware modifications.
- Price uncertainty: ASUS’s US Flare II Animate listing did not display a current price in the listing captured on August 18, 2026. Historical launch or retail prices should not be treated as current offers.
How does it compare with the alternatives?
| Keyboard | Best fit | Key difference | Price signal in the cited ASUS US listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Strix Flare II Animate | Buyers who specifically want the Matrix display and a wired 100% layout | AniMe Matrix, full-size layout; wired only | Not displayed in the captured listing on August 18, 2026 |
| ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless | Buyers who want a more compact layout and wireless flexibility | 96% layout; wired, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz connectivity | $149.99 promotional price; $179.99 reference price, shown August 2026 |
| ROG Strix Flare II | Buyers who want the broad full-size concept but not the animated display | Similar wired full-size approach without the AniMe Matrix | $179.99 price signal shown on ASUS US page |
| Conventional enthusiast hot-swap keyboard | Buyers prioritizing switch changes or broader firmware flexibility | Look for explicit socketed hot-swap support and verified switch compatibility | Not stated |
The ASUS prices are listing signals, not guaranteed checkout prices or permanent offers. The Scope II 96 Wireless is the more practical direction if you want wireless and a smaller layout; it is not a substitute for the Flare’s Matrix or a standard 100% layout.
Should you buy the Flare II Animate in 2026?
Buy it if the AniMe Matrix is genuinely the reason you want this keyboard, you need the numpad and media controls, prefer wired operation, have enough desk space and are comfortable configuring it with Armoury Crate. At a substantial discount, its distinctive display and strong gaming performance can make sense together.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Skip it if you want wireless, a compact board, quiet switches, minimal software or a clearly documented hot-swap platform. ASUS still maintains a US product page, but that does not establish current stock or production status. Check the exact switch and layout, seller warranty and live price before ordering. If the Flare II Animate costs about as much as a newer wireless option, the Scope II 96 Wireless is the practical pick for most buyers; pay extra for the Animate only when its display and full-size layout are priorities.
