N-key rollover (NKRO) means a keyboard can recognize and report any number of simultaneously pressed keys, while anti-ghosting is a broader term for techniques that prevent or reduce incorrect key input. They are related, but an “anti-ghosting” label alone does not promise full NKRO. For ordinary gaming and typing, a reliable 6-key rollover (6KRO) keyboard is usually enough; full NKRO is worth prioritizing if your actual games or other tasks require more simultaneous inputs.
What key rollover means
Key rollover is the number of keys a keyboard can correctly recognize and report at the same time. The “N” in NKRO stands for the number of keys: full NKRO is a claim that any number of keys can be recognized simultaneously. CHERRY calls this full-key rollover, while G.SKILL describes NKRO as the ability to detect any number of simultaneous key presses (CHERRY; G.SKILL).
- 2KRO: at least two simultaneous keys.
- 6KRO: up to six simultaneous non-modifier keys in the usual product-spec sense.
- NKRO or full-key rollover: the manufacturer claims all keys can be recognized together; check the connection mode and operating conditions.
Modifiers such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Windows or GUI key are commonly handled separately from the non-modifier key positions in a standard USB boot-keyboard report. So “6KRO” does not necessarily mean only six total keys including modifiers.
Ghosting and anti-ghosting are not the same as NKRO
In the strict sense, ghosting is a false, unpressed key appearing in the input when several keys are pressed together. In everyday keyboard discussions, the term is also used for related problems: a pressed key going missing, a key combination blocking another key, or a host device failing to accept the keyboard’s report.

Anti-ghosting describes efforts to prevent or reduce those errors. It may refer to the electrical design, firmware, or protection for selected combinations. It is not a universal performance grade: Microsoft warns that an “anti-ghosting” claim may apply only to a subset of keys, rather than every possible combination (Microsoft Applied Sciences).
| Label | What it describes | Does the label alone guarantee full simultaneous input? |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-ghosting | Prevention or reduction of false or blocked input | No; coverage may be limited to certain combinations. |
| 6KRO | Six simultaneous non-modifier key positions in the usual specification sense | No; the stated limit is six. |
| NKRO | A claim that any number of keys can be recognized and reported simultaneously | It is the full-rollover claim, but implementation and connection mode still matter. |
| Full-key rollover | Common synonym for NKRO | Check the manufacturer’s definition and the mode in which it applies. |
That distinction is why “100% anti-ghosting” is not enough information by itself. Look for an explicit rollover limit and whether the claim applies over USB, Bluetooth, or another connection.
How a keyboard handles simultaneous presses
The switch matrix
Most keyboards scan a grid of rows and columns rather than wiring every switch independently. When several keys close at once, the controller must work out which switches are down. Without suitable isolation, current can take unintended paths through the grid, making some combinations ambiguous.

Diodes and other circuit designs
A diode at each switch can block unintended current paths and is a conventional way to support reliable full-key rollover. But mechanical switches alone do not guarantee NKRO: the matrix, controller, firmware, and report format all affect the result. Membrane construction does not automatically rule it out either; Microsoft documented a membrane-based anti-ghosting approach alongside traditional matrix and diode designs (Microsoft’s SideWinder X4 anti-ghosting brochure).
Firmware and USB reports
Recognizing keys electrically is only one step; the keyboard must encode those states for the host. The conventional USB HID boot-keyboard report has six non-modifier key positions. That does not mean all USB keyboards are limited to six keys: the HID specification distinguishes boot protocol from report protocol, which can use a different, larger report layout when the keyboard and host support it (USB HID 1.11; USB HID 1.12).
A keyboard can therefore have a matrix that detects many keys but default to 6KRO in firmware, offer a switchable NKRO mode, or provide different rollover behavior in wired and wireless modes. The host, operating system, game, KVM, or pre-boot environment can also affect what gets through. Microsoft identifies hardware, software, and communication-protocol limitations as distinct causes of simultaneous-input problems (Microsoft Applied Sciences).

How much NKRO matters for gaming
Action games and ordinary PC play
Many common action-game inputs combine movement keys with a few additional controls: for example, W + A + Shift + Space, perhaps with another key for an ability. A reliable 6KRO board generally handles this kind of combination. For most players, layout, comfort, switch preference, reliability, and price matter more than a full-NKRO claim.
Keybind-heavy, rhythm, and competitive play
Full NKRO can matter if your bindings require many keys held together, if a particular combination repeatedly fails, or if you play a rhythm or other input-dense game. It may also be useful for complex macros. Competitive play alone does not make NKRO essential: rollover only concerns whether simultaneous key states are recognized and reported. It does not improve reaction time, skill, frame rate, or input latency.

Games that use few simultaneous inputs are unlikely to expose a rollover limit. If this is your main use, NKRO is best treated as a useful extra rather than a deciding feature.

How much it matters for typing and other work
Fast typists sometimes press the next key before releasing the previous one, which can expose a rollover problem that slower typing does not. Microsoft describes this overlap as one situation in which rollover errors can become visible (Microsoft’s SideWinder X4 anti-ghosting brochure). Still, normal typing and programming rarely require a large number of ordinary keys to remain held simultaneously, and 6KRO is commonly adequate unless you experience a specific missed-combination issue.
Full NKRO is more relevant for chorded text entry, stenography, musical performance software, accessibility workflows that use several held keys, and custom input schemes. For these uses, test the exact chords and software you depend on rather than relying only on a broad product label.

A keyboard that works in full NKRO mode in a desktop operating system may behave differently in a BIOS, KVM switch, recovery environment, older host, or embedded device. Such hosts may expect the conventional boot-keyboard report, whose standard format has six non-modifier key positions. If pre-boot or KVM use matters to you, check whether the keyboard offers a 6KRO or compatibility mode and whether the host supports its NKRO mode (USB HID 1.12).

Do not assume a wired specification also applies over Bluetooth or 2.4-GHz wireless. Manufacturers may use different report formats or firmware behavior by mode, so verify the claim for the connection you will actually use.
There is also a vendor-specific terminology wrinkle: Razer’s support page says NKRO “only works” through a native PS/2 port and describes its USB gaming matrix as serving a similar purpose (Razer support). That should not be read as a universal technical rule: CHERRY, Corsair, and ASUS product pages explicitly describe full NKRO or NKRO over USB (CHERRY; Corsair K66; ASUS ROG Strix Scope TKL Electro Punk). Treat Razer’s statement as specific to its explanation or implementation; verify the exact keyboard and mode rather than generalizing it to every USB device.
What NKRO does not tell you
Rollover is about the number and correctness of simultaneous key states, not speed. It does not specify input latency, polling rate, switch response, actuation force, debounce quality, wireless stability, key chatter resistance, or whether a particular game accepts every input. Product pages list these as separate properties: for instance, Corsair lists full-key NKRO and a 1,000-Hz HID report rate as distinct specifications, as does ASUS in its feature and specification information (Corsair K66; ASUS ROG Strix Scope TKL Electro Punk).
How to test your keyboard’s rollover
- Choose a test surface. Use a reputable browser keyboard tester or a text editor that visibly shows key input. A tester shows behavior in that environment; it is not a lab certification.
- Start with your real combination. Hold the keys you use in a game or shortcut, such as
W+A+Shift+Space. Add one key at a time. - Watch for errors. Check whether a held key disappears, an unpressed key appears, or adding a key stops another from registering.
- Try other relevant combinations. Matrix behavior can depend on which keys are involved. Passing one set of six keys does not prove every six-key combination—or full NKRO—works.
- Compare modes. If the keyboard has a rollover or compatibility toggle, repeat the same combination in each mode. If you use wired, 2.4-GHz, and Bluetooth modes, test each one separately.
- Check the target application. If the test works in a browser but fails in one game or pre-boot screen, the issue may be specific to that application or host rather than general keyboard rollover.
What to check before buying
- Look for a specific claim: “full NKRO over USB” is clearer than “anti-ghosting” without a stated limit.
- Check each connection mode: confirm whether the claim applies to wired USB, 2.4-GHz wireless, Bluetooth, or only one of them.
- Check compatibility options: a documented NKRO/6KRO toggle can be useful with a BIOS or KVM that expects boot protocol.
- Match the claim to your use: seek independent testing or test the combinations you actually need, especially for specialist chorded input.
- Compare the whole keyboard: prioritize layout, ergonomics, switch quality, firmware reliability, remapping support, and warranty. Mechanical construction by itself is not proof of NKRO.
For most people, a reliable 6KRO keyboard is sufficient for everyday gaming, typing, and office work. Choose full NKRO when you need it, when it costs little extra, or when a specific combination has failed; do not sacrifice a better layout or more comfortable, reliable keyboard just to get the label.
