The controls and available modes vary by platform, camera mode, client version, and VRC+ status, so start with the Quick Menu’s Camera tab and use the options shown in your client.
What the VRChat camera can do
Think of the camera as four connected toolsets: still photography, stream output, cinematic movement, and creator-focused image assets. A regular Local Photo is the simplest way to save a still. Stream mode supplies a camera view for compatible desktop capture software. Flying, Dolly, and Drone options help create moving shots, while masks and Multi Layer mode support compositing.
Not every option is available everywhere. In particular, Spout is a desktop workflow, and Camera Drone and Camera Dolly were introduced as VRC+ features in VRChat’s 2025.1.3 release notes. Check the live client for the options supported by your platform and account.
Open the camera and take a photo
Open the camera
- Open the Quick Menu and select the Camera tab. This is the most useful starting point because it exposes camera modes and related controls.
- Alternatively, open Action Menu → Tools → Camera. Controller shortcuts differ by headset, input profile, and custom SteamVR bindings; use the menu path if a shortcut does not work. VRChat lists control schemes at its controls documentation.
Capture a basic image
- Select Local Photo or the normal photo mode.
- Position the lens and choose landscape or portrait orientation.
- Choose whether to include the local user, remote users, environment/world, and UI. These options are masks: they control which parts of the scene appear in the output.
- Adjust zoom, focus, aperture, or exposure if the shot needs them.
- Select Take Photo. For a group photo or self-portrait, use the five-second timed capture so you can move into position. Nearby users can see the timed-photo indicator.
- On desktop or PCVR, use Open Photos Folder in the Camera tab to find the result. On standalone Quest, check the headset’s Files or Photos app; the exact access and sync route depends on headset software.
VRChat’s Wiki says Windows camera photos are normally saved under C:Users<username>PicturesVRChat, organized by month and year. See its Camera page; it is marked as a work in progress, so the in-client folder command is the most dependable route.

Choose the right camera mode
These modes serve different jobs; subscription requirements and platform availability are not interchangeable. VRChat’s Camera Wiki describes the mode set but is marked as a work in progress, so treat it as a guide rather than a complete version-by-version list.
| Mode | Best for | Behavior or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Local Photo | Ordinary photos and portraits | Saves a regular image. |
| Timed Photo | Group pictures and self-portraits | Uses a five-second countdown; nearby users can see its indicator. |
| Multi Layer | Compositing and post-production | Can produce separate environment, user, and UI images; may affect frame rate and does not support every focus or filter option. |
| Stream | Recording or livestream composition | Desktop camera output can use Spout; a compatible receiver is required. |
| In-world physical-style prints | Availability may depend on VRC+ features. | |

Compose the frame
Zoom and orientation
The camera zoom control is documented with a range of 20–150 and a default of 45 in VRChat’s 2025.3.3 documentation. These are VRChat control values, not focal-length equivalents. Lower values give a wider-looking view; higher values tighten framing and help isolate distant subjects. At extreme zoom, small camera movements become more noticeable and clipping can be harder to judge.
Portrait orientation suits profile images, vertical clips, and full-body avatar portraits; landscape is usually more flexible for groups and world views. VRChat documented a desktop landscape/portrait switch in its 2024.3.3 release notes. Check orientation in both VRChat and your recording software before capturing.
Use the grid and camera position
- Turn on the grid to place eyes near a consistent horizontal line and use thirds for faces or environmental details.
- Leave enough space above an avatar without letting empty ceiling dominate the frame.
- For a flattering portrait, try the avatar’s eye level rather than an extreme low or high angle.
- Move the lens away from geometry if the avatar is clipped or appears cut off; avoid placing the camera inside a wall or avatar mesh.
- Use pins, where available, to return to repeatable viewpoints for event coverage or to switch between wide, medium, and close framing. Exact pin save behavior is not fully documented, so confirm it in your client before relying on it across sessions.
Focus, aperture, and exposure
Focus and depth of field
Auto Focus is the quickest portrait starting point. Semi-Auto and Manual focus offer more control where available. Focal distance determines what is sharp; aperture controls depth of field, or how much of the scene stays in focus. The 2025.3.3 camera documentation lists focal distance from 0 to 10 (default 1.5) and aperture from 1.4 to 32 (default 15). A lower aperture value produces stronger background blur; a higher value keeps more of the scene sharp.

The Focus Overlay helps show where the camera is focusing; it was documented in the 2024.3.3 release notes. For a quick portrait, enable Auto Focus, aim at the subject, confirm the focus region, then take a test image with moderate blur. For a group, increase depth of field so people at different distances are less likely to fall outside the sharp zone. In manual focus, set distance around the eyes or face, then check hair, hands, and accessories before committing to the shot.
Exposure
Exposure is documented from −10 to +4, with 0 as the default, in VRChat’s 2025.3.3 documentation. Raise it when a dark scene or heavy shadows hide the subject; lower it if bright skies, neon, or emissive materials wash out detail. Exposure affects photos, video, Stream mode/Spout, and Dolly animation. For a recording, set it before the take so brightness does not shift unexpectedly; test in the output mode you plan to use.
If the whole image is blurry
- Enable the Focus Overlay.
- Switch temporarily to Auto Focus and aim at the subject again.
- Increase the aperture value to reduce blur and expand the sharp area.
- Check whether movement or smoothing is making the camera drift, and confirm that the current mode supports the focus behavior you selected.
Use masks, green screen, and layers
Masks let you decide whether the local user, remote users, environment/world, UI, green screen, or other supported world items appear. They are useful for building a composite, not just hiding an unwanted object.
Avatar cutout or background plate
- For an avatar cutout, include the relevant user mask and remove the environment, or use green screen where supported.
- For a background plate, capture the world without avatars, then capture the subject separately.
- Keep the camera position, focus, and exposure unchanged between passes so the layers line up.
- Composite the images in an editor and inspect edges around hair, particles, transparent materials, and reflective surfaces.
Green-screen output is not automatically a clean alpha channel: chroma-key cleanup and edge refinement may be needed, and green spill can affect fine detail. Multi Layer mode can output the regular image plus environment, user, and UI layers; user and UI layers can include alpha transparency. It may cause frame impact and does not support every focus or filter option. The behavior is described on the VRChat Camera Wiki.

Record or stream the camera view
Stream mode and Spout
Stream mode replaces the desktop view with the camera view. On desktop, VRChat can send a real-time camera feed through Spout to compatible software. VRChat describes the workflow with OBS and a Spout2 Capture source in its 2024.3.3 release notes. Spout is primarily a Windows/PC workflow; standalone Quest users should not expect to use it directly.
- Install OBS Studio and a compatible Spout capture receiver or plugin.
- In VRChat, open the Camera tab, choose Stream, and enable the Spout stream.
- In OBS, add a Spout capture source and select the VRChat camera feed.
- Set and check stream resolution and orientation. Stream resolution is separate from Photo Resolution in current camera options, as noted in the 2024.4.1 release notes.
- Record a short test and verify framing, UI masks, and audio before going live.
Stream Mode can remain active after the camera itself is closed, according to VRChat’s 2024.3.3 open-beta notes. If Spout is unavailable, ordinary window or display capture is a fallback, though it may include unwanted UI. A 2026.2.3 note says loading scenes can yield a black stream rather than a partially rendered image; see the release notes.
Audio from the camera
Audio From Camera changes your listening position to the camera rather than your avatar. That can help when piloting a cinematic fly-through, but it can make spatial conversation confusing. Test it before recording: it changes what the operator hears, not necessarily what other users hear.
Move the camera: flying, Dolly, and Drone
Flying camera
Flying moves the camera independently of the avatar, making it useful for overhead angles, orbit shots, establishing views, and slow reveals. VRChat’s 2025.3.3 documentation lists fly speed from 0.1 to 15 (default 3), turn speed from 0.1 to 5 (default 1), and smoothing strength from 0.1 to 10 (default 5); see the camera control documentation. Start with lower movement and turn speeds. Smoothing can make a slow move feel more polished, but adds lag; reduce it when quick response matters. VRChat split auto-leveling into separate Roll and Pitch controls: Roll helps level a tilted frame, while Pitch helps keep the camera toward the horizon, as described in the 2024.3.3 notes.

Camera Dolly (VRC+)
Dolly is for repeatable animated paths, such as a push-in, pull-out, orbit around a stationary avatar, or a moving group shot. It launched as a VRC+ feature with Drone in the 2025.1.3 release. Add points, preview or play the path, and use the available controls to clear points, show or hide the path, set duration, and set photo rate. The 2025.3.3 documentation gives photo rate as 0.1–2 (default 1) and duration as 0.1–60 seconds (default 2 seconds); these are documented control ranges, not guarantees about a particular output frame rate.
Make a short test pass: a path can be too fast, intersect geometry, or leave a moving subject outside the focus plane. If the result contains too many or too few frames, adjust photo rate. Quest-specific Dolly behavior may differ; VRChat’s 2025.1.3 open-beta notes mention possible point-rotation or loading-screen issues on Quest.
Camera Drone (VRC+)
Drone is a remotely piloted camera for aerial, FPV, tracking, and other shots where the avatar can stay elsewhere. The Camera tab can launch it. The VRChat Camera Drone Wiki describes FPV, self-leveling, respawn, stream output, focus, masks, filters, grid, resolution settings, and presets including Micro, Cinematic, Racing, and Freestyle. Because the page is marked as a stub, use the live client for exact controls and platform support rather than relying on unverified setting ranges.
If you do not have access to Dolly or Drone, ordinary flying, timed capture, and repeatable camera positions can still cover many of the same creative needs. VRC+ is most relevant when you specifically want a remote pilot or saved, repeatable camera motion; it is not necessary for ordinary photos or desktop recording.

Automate camera actions with OSC
Advanced users can control camera state and actions through OSC. VRChat documents read/write camera endpoints in its 2025.3.3 documentation. Examples include:
/usercamera/Mode
/usercamera/Close
/usercamera/Capture
/usercamera/CaptureDelayed
/usercamera/Zoom
/usercamera/Exposure
/usercamera/FocalDistance
/usercamera/Aperture
/usercamera/FlySpeed
/usercamera/TurnSpeed
/usercamera/SmoothingStrength
/usercamera/PhotoRate
/usercamera/Duration
The documented mode values are 0 Off, 1 Photo, 2 Stream, 3 Emoji, 4 Multilayer, 5 Print, and 6 Drone. Other documented toggles include /usercamera/Lock, /usercamera/LocalPlayer, /usercamera/RemotePlayer, /usercamera/Environment, /usercamera/GreenScreen, /usercamera/SmoothMovement, /usercamera/LookAtMe, /usercamera/AutoLevelRoll, /usercamera/AutoLevelPitch, /usercamera/Flying, /usercamera/TriggerTakesPhotos, /usercamera/CameraEars, /usercamera/ShowFocus, /usercamera/Streaming, and /usercamera/OrientationIsLandscape.
Check endpoint spelling, value type, and behavior against the current documentation before building a controller; camera OSC has changed. VRChat’s 2026.2.3 notes, for example, record a fix for swapped horizontal and vertical Look-At-Me offsets.
Find a missing photo or fix a camera problem
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The shutter does nothing | Confirm the selected mode supports capture, check the input binding, and make sure you are not in a stream-only state. |
| The image is missing | On desktop/PCVR, use Open Photos Folder; distinguish VRChat photos from Steam screenshots, OBS recordings, Spout output, and in-game Gallery assets. On Quest, check the headset’s Files or Photos app and platform-dependent sync options. |
| A subject is invisible | Check Local User, Remote Users, Environment, and UI masks; a disabled mask may be hiding the subject or world. |
| The avatar is clipped | Move the lens back, reframe, and avoid putting the camera inside world or avatar geometry. |
| The Spout source is black | Verify Stream mode and the receiver/plugin, then check whether VRChat is in a loading scene. |
| The portrait stream is sideways | Confirm orientation in VRChat and in the receiver or recording scene. |
| Focus fails on a group | Increase the aperture value for more depth of field and focus at a distance that covers the group. |
| Movement looks jerky | Reduce fly and turn speed, adjust smoothing, and check whether low frame rate is affecting the motion. |
| The camera seems stuck | Check Lock, detached-lens behavior, pins, and whether Flying, Dolly, or Drone mode is active. |
| A VRC+ option is absent | Confirm the account and subscription status, platform support, and whether the feature’s availability has changed. |
Privacy and sharing
Camera indicators may be visible to nearby users, but their appearance depends on interface state and context. Follow world rules and event policies, and get consent before recording people or private conversations. Before publishing, check for usernames, private messages, invite details, and UI overlays in the frame.
Recommended Free Tools
The VRChat Wiki says photo metadata may include the author’s display name and ID, plus world display name and ID, with different handling for private-world information. See its Camera page; metadata behavior and private-world handling should be checked against the current client before relying on a particular privacy outcome.
Quick starting settings
These are practical starting points, not universal presets; lighting, avatars, platform, and intended output change what works.
Quick Recap
| Use case | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Avatar portrait | Portrait orientation, grid on, Auto Focus, moderate blur, exposure at 0 to begin. |
| Group photo | Wider framing, deeper focus, timed capture, environment and remote-user masks enabled. |
| Cinematic close-up | Manual focus on the face, lower aperture value, slow movement, smoothing on. |
| Fast action | Higher aperture value for more depth of field, less smoothing, faster turn response. |
| Green-screen avatar | Include the avatar, remove the environment or enable green screen, then test edges around hair and transparent effects. |
| Stream recording | Stream mode, separate stream resolution, fixed exposure, and a tested Spout receiver. |
