To turn on your webcam in Roblox on PC, join an experience that supports camera-based avatar animation, allow camera access, open the in-experience menu, and select its camera control. This animates your avatar’s facial expressions and head movements; it does not change your game viewpoint or normally show other players your real-world camera feed.
In this guide, “turn on the camera” means using your webcam to animate your Roblox avatar—not switching between first-person and third-person views. Roblox’s camera and microphone inputs start off when you enter an experience, and camera animation is available only where the experience supports it.
Check that the experience supports webcam animation
- Open the experience’s Roblox details page.
- Find About and look at the Communication field.
- Check whether it lists Camera or Microphone and Camera.
- Camera: The experience supports camera-based avatar animation.
- Microphone and Camera: It supports both camera animation and voice communication.
- Microphone only, or no camera listing: The experience may not expose avatar camera animation.
Experience developers decide whether to enable camera support. Roblox documents the feature and its availability in Animate Your Avatar; creators can configure camera support through Experience Settings. If the control is missing, test in an experience that lists Camera before changing PC settings.
Turn on the webcam in Roblox
- Connect or open your built-in or USB webcam. Close video-call, streaming, or other apps that may be using it.
- Launch Roblox and join a camera-enabled experience.
- When prompted, allow Roblox to access the camera.
- Open the Roblox menu in the upper-left corner and select the camera control to enable avatar animation.
- To watch the result, open Self View. This view is optional; you can move, resize, or close it without making it the camera activation step.
Your avatar’s facial expressions and head movements should respond to the webcam. Roblox’s current experience controls can vary according to the features enabled in a particular experience, so the control may not appear in exactly the same place everywhere. Select a different webcam
Roblox initially uses the computer’s default camera. To choose another camera while in a camera-enabled experience, open Roblox menu → Settings → Video Camera and select the device you want. The setting may not appear in an experience without camera support, and a device may be listed by its hardware name rather than as “webcam.”
Allow camera access in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
- Turn on Camera access.
- Turn on Let apps access your camera, then Let desktop apps access your camera.
The standard Roblox PC app is a desktop application. Windows may not show a separate camera-access switch for each desktop app; the desktop-app setting applies more broadly. Microsoft’s instructions are in Manage app permissions for a camera in Windows.

Windows 10 (legacy)
Open Start → Settings → Privacy → Camera, then enable device, app, and desktop-app access as applicable. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft’s Windows camera, microphone, and privacy page describes the privacy controls and support end date.
Troubleshoot a missing or non-working camera
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |

| No camera control | The experience does not support camera animation, or you are looking at gameplay camera settings. | Check the experience’s About → Communication field and test in one that lists Camera. |
| No permission prompt | Permission may already have been granted or denied, or the experience may not request camera access. | Review Windows camera privacy settings and relevant device permissions. If access was blocked earlier, restore it in settings rather than waiting for another prompt. |
| Webcam missing from Video Camera | Windows may not detect the device, or another app may be using it. | Test the webcam in the Windows Camera app, close other camera-using apps, and check that a privacy shutter or hardware camera key is not disabling it. |
| Avatar does not respond | The selected camera may be wrong, tracking conditions may be poor, the avatar head may not support facial animation, or the experience may limit the feature. | Check Settings → Video Camera, improve lighting, center your visible face, and try a compatible avatar head. |

For hardware checks, Microsoft recommends checking camera permissions, closing apps that may be using the camera, and checking shutters or camera keys. See Camera doesn’t work in Windows. For tracking, even lighting and an unobstructed, centered face are practical things to try, not stated minimum technical requirements.

For the best facial response, use an avatar head that supports facial animation. Roblox marks compatible heads with a winking-face icon in Avatar customization and the Marketplace. The official instructions do not establish a universal minimum webcam resolution, frame rate, brand, or model.
What the Roblox camera does—and does not—show
Roblox’s facial-animation privacy notice says facial-motion analysis for avatar animation happens on your device and the camera video is not sent to Roblox or third parties for that purpose. This is about avatar animation; it should not be generalized to every Roblox feature that uses facial media. The avatar-animation feature is not a live rectangular facecam overlay for other players. A visible facecam is a separate streaming or recording setup. Camera availability can depend on the experience, account eligibility, device, avatar, and Roblox’s current safety or communication requirements; voice features have separate age and eligibility rules.

To change the view of the Roblox world rather than animate your avatar, open the in-experience settings and use the camera-mode options available in that experience. In Classic mode, Roblox says you can hold the right mouse button and drag to change the viewpoint; Follow rotates with your avatar’s movement. Shift Lock can toggle camera modes when the experience permits it. These gameplay controls are separate from webcam animation; see In-experience Settings and Help.
