If the headset is off, stuck at startup, or missing from the app, use the button method: power it off, hold Power + Volume Down, choose Factory Reset with the volume buttons, then press Power to confirm Yes.
Before you reset: what will be erased
A factory reset clears data stored on the headset and returns it to initial setup. Meta describes the process as wiping the Quest 2 and restoring its out-of-box software state; that does not mean it necessarily downgrades the installed system software. Meta’s reset video demonstrates the wipe.

Before starting, confirm that you can access the Meta account you intend to use afterward, including its password and any required two-factor authentication. Charge the headset so the process is not interrupted. If you are resetting to troubleshoot, remember that a reset may not solve a pairing, network, or hardware problem.
Choose the right action

If you only want to clear one game or save, check the game’s own save controls or ask its developer about account-backed progress before wiping the entire headset.

Method 1: Reset from the Meta mobile app
Use the app route when the Quest 2 is on, paired, and visible in the app. The documented path is Devices → select the headset → Advanced Settings → Factory Reset → Reset.
- Open the Meta Quest mobile app and sign in to the account associated with the headset.
- Open Devices and select your Quest 2.
- Open Advanced Settings, choose Factory Reset, then confirm with Reset.
Meta has changed the app’s branding and interface over time, so labels may differ by app release. Look for the selected headset’s device-management or advanced-settings screen. If the headset is not visible or paired, use the button method instead.

Method 2: Reset with the Quest 2 buttons
This method does not depend on the phone app and is useful when the headset cannot reach its normal interface. Meta support gives the same button sequence and menu controls. Meta support instructions
- Turn the headset completely off.
- Press and hold Power and Volume Down at the same time until the boot or USB Update Mode menu appears.
- Use either volume button to highlight Factory Reset.
- Press Power to select it.
- Highlight Yes, then press Power again to confirm.
- Wait while the headset erases its data and restarts.
The volume buttons move through the menu; Power selects an option. Choose Factory Reset, not a restart or reboot option, if your goal is to erase the headset.

Set up the headset after the reset
- Turn on the Quest 2 and follow the initial prompts, including language selection.
- Connect the headset to Wi-Fi and sign in to the Meta account that owns the apps you want to use.
- Install or open the current Meta mobile app and pair the headset when prompted.
- Pair or reconnect the controllers and allow any required system update to finish.
- Reinstall purchased apps from the account’s library, then configure the boundary, room setup, preferences, and accessibility options again.
- Check whether the games you play have restored supported cloud saves.
Resetting before selling or gifting
- Check Cloud Backup and save anything else you can preserve.
- Factory-reset the headset using either method above.
- Wait for the initial setup screen, then leave the headset there without signing back in.
- Hand over the headset and included accessories, but do not give the recipient your account credentials.
Deleting the phone app or signing out of the phone does not erase the headset; reset the headset itself. The reset removes your account from the device, but it does not transfer your purchases to the recipient. A second-hand buyer should use their own Meta account. If the previous owner’s account is still on the headset, ask that owner to reset it.

The app cannot find the headset
- Make sure the headset is on, Bluetooth is enabled on the phone, and the phone is signed into the intended Meta account.
- Restart both devices and check that the app is up to date.
- If the headset remains unavailable in the app, use the physical-button method.
The buttons do not open the menu
- Confirm the headset is fully powered off.
- Hold Power + Volume Down simultaneously and keep holding until the menu appears; pressing the buttons one after another or holding Volume Up will not follow the documented sequence.
- Once in the menu, navigate with volume and select with Power.
The headset shows “No command” or returns to the boot menu
Do not select random menu options or try undocumented firmware procedures. Recheck the button sequence and select Factory Reset explicitly. If it repeatedly returns to the boot menu or remains stuck, contact Meta Support; reports of a “no command” screen do not establish one fix that works for every headset. Setup or pairing fails after the reset
- Restart the headset and phone, then confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are working.
- Update or reinstall the Meta mobile app and check that you are signing into the correct account.
- If available, try another compatible phone and retry controller pairing.
- Repeat the reset only if the first attempt may not have completed. If setup remains blocked, contact Meta Support rather than assuming the headset is permanently damaged.
Pairing failures have been reported after resets, but anecdotal reports do not show that a reset universally causes the problem. One user report
A reset did not fix the problem
A reset clears software configuration; it cannot repair physical controller damage or drift, a damaged charging port, cracked lens, display failure, battery degradation, or a failed sensor. For hardware symptoms, contact Meta Support about diagnosis or service rather than repeatedly resetting. If only one app is affected, troubleshoot that app before wiping the headset.
