How to Improve FPS and Performance in VALORANT

Use VALORANT’s performance graphs to identify the cause of low FPS or stutter, then tune graphics, Windows, drivers, and hardware based on what the measurements show.

To improve VALORANT performance, first identify whether the problem is low client FPS, uneven frame times, input delay, ping, packet loss, or server performance. Use the game’s performance graphs, then make one low-risk change at a time. Lower graphics settings help most when the GPU is the bottleneck; they may do little on a CPU-limited PC.

Identify what is going wrong

“Performance” can describe several different problems. Check VALORANT’s performance graphs under Settings → Video → Stats and note when the symptoms occur. Riot’s troubleshooting guide separates client FPS, server performance, ping, and packet loss; changing graphics settings will not fix a network problem.

Symptom Likely area to investigate First check
Low FPS throughout a match Hardware limit, graphics settings, power limit, or thermal throttling FPS and CPU/GPU render-time graphs; utilization and clock speeds
High FPS but visible hitching Frame-time spikes, driver or overlay issue, background workload, or display synchronization Frame-time graph; disable overlays one at a time
Drops during fights CPU load, effects, background activity, temperature, or driver behavior CPU render time and process usage during the drop
FPS stays at exactly 60, 120, or 144 A game, driver, Windows, or monitor refresh-rate limit Frame caps, VSync, driver overrides, and Windows display refresh rate
High ping Network route, router, or ISP Network RTT graph and comparison with other services
Packet-loss warning Wireless connection, router, ISP, or route Packet-loss graph; compare with a wired connection
Low server FPS indicator Server-side performance rather than the PC’s graphics workload Server-performance graph
Input feels delayed despite high FPS VSync, queued frames, display setup, or system latency VSync, synchronization settings, and latency options

In the Stats menu, enable client FPS, frame time, CPU and GPU render time, network RTT, packet loss, and server-performance indicators where available. Menu labels and available graphs can vary by game version or hardware. Compare the graphs during the actual problem—not only in the practice range.

Check whether your PC meets Riot’s requirements

Riot’s VALORANT specifications list Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or 64-bit Windows 11; a processor supporting SSE 4.2 or AVX; 4 GB of RAM; and 1 GB of VRAM. Riot lists approximate hardware tiers for 30 FPS, 60 FPS, and 144+ FPS. These are reference tiers, not guarantees for a particular map, patch, resolution, temperature, or background workload.

Recommended Intel i3-4150 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 NVIDIA GT 730 or AMD Radeon R7 240 60 FPS
High-end Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti, AMD Radeon R7 370, or Intel Arc A310 144+ FPS

Riot also lists TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot as requirements for Windows 11. Do not disable these security features as a generic performance tweak.

Establish a repeatable baseline

Before changing settings, record what the PC does in a consistent situation. This makes it easier to tell whether a fix helped and to undo changes that did not.

  1. Restart the PC. If it is a laptop, connect its power adapter and select the manufacturer’s appropriate performance mode.
  2. Close browsers, launchers, recorders, RGB utilities, and overlays that are not needed for the test.
  3. Launch VALORANT and enable the relevant graphs at Settings → Video → Stats.
  4. Use the same resolution, graphics settings, and test situation after each change. Record average FPS, frame-time behavior, CPU/GPU render times, and whether the issue appears in the range, Deathmatch, or a normal match.
  5. Check temperatures, clock speeds, and utilization while the problem occurs. Change only one major variable at a time.

Windows’ built-in tools can help investigate what is happening:

  • dxdiag shows DirectX, display, audio, and driver information.
  • msinfo32 lists hardware, BIOS, and Windows configuration.
  • resmon opens Resource Monitor for CPU, memory, disk, and network activity.
  • perfmon /rel opens Reliability Monitor, which can help identify crashes or problems that began after an update.

These tools provide clues; they do not by themselves prove the cause of an FPS problem.

Set a sensible graphics baseline

Start with native resolution. Riot identifies Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality as settings to lower when diagnosing low client FPS, and suggests testing with Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows disabled. A competitive-oriented starting point is shown below; it is a test baseline, not a universal best configuration.

BlingKingdom 10 PCS Mechanical Keyboard Switches, MX Clicky Blue for Gaming
  • This blue key switch has a transparent housing, suitable for LED backlighting, offers excellent tactile feedback, smoother, and will satisfy you with the classic crisp click sound.
  • The mechanical keyboard switch is made of plastic shell, copper gasket, high-quality spring, the shaft core material is POM, waterproof, approximate lifespan of 50 million times of keystrokes, durable.
  • Total stroke of blue switch: 4 mm; working stroke: 2.2±0.6 mm. Tip: Pins may be bent during shipment, but will not be affected the use after correction.
  • Good compatibility, great for most mechanical keyboards, a strong sense of paragraphing, suitable for users pursuing feel and performance, and suitable for typists, enjoy the rhythm of work and games.
  • Packaging: 10 PCS 3 pin keyboard dustproof switches.
Setting Starting point How to think about it
Display mode Fullscreen Compare with borderless or windowed if the problem appears tied to display behavior or Alt-Tab.
Resolution Native Lower it only if the GPU is limiting performance and the visual trade-off is acceptable.
Multithreaded Rendering On, when available and supported Test on the system rather than assuming it will help every configuration.
Material, Detail, and UI Quality Low Useful settings to test during low-FPS diagnosis; the benefit depends on the bottleneck.
Texture Quality Low or Medium Try lower values if GPU resources are constrained.
Vignette Off A reasonable visual-effects baseline.
VSync Off for lowest-latency testing Use it if you deliberately prefer tear-free presentation; compare the result.
Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering Off or low-cost Anti-Aliasing; low or medium filtering Adjust to balance image quality and performance on the actual PC.
Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, Cast Shadows Off for troubleshooting Re-enable an effect later if its visual benefit matters and performance remains stable.

Lower settings do not automatically raise FPS. Riot explains that older systems are more likely to be GPU-bound, while newer systems may be CPU-bound because graphics processing has advanced faster than CPU performance. See Riot’s explanation of VALORANT shaders and gameplay clarity. If CPU render time is the constraint, reducing GPU-heavy settings or resolution may change little.

If the GPU is limiting performance

  1. Try lowering resolution or render scale if the game provides that option.
  2. Lower Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality, then test disabling the effects Riot identifies for troubleshooting.
  3. Close GPU-accelerated video playback and overlays.
  4. Confirm VALORANT is running on the intended GPU, particularly on a laptop.
  5. Update the graphics driver, or test a rollback if the problem began immediately after a driver update.

If the CPU is limiting performance

  1. Try lower Detail and UI Quality, but do not expect GPU-focused changes to solve a CPU limit.
  2. Close browsers, recording tools, launchers, and monitoring utilities, then check CPU use during a match.
  3. Check CPU temperature and sustained clock speed for signs of throttling or power limits.
  4. Test a frame cap the PC can hold during combat rather than targeting an unstable peak.
  5. Look for one or a few saturated CPU cores; total CPU utilization alone can conceal a per-core limit.

Choose a frame cap deliberately

Uncapped FPS can reduce latency when a system can render substantially more frames than the display refresh rate, but it can also increase heat, power use, fan noise, and instability. It may waste resources in menus or background states. A cap can improve frame pacing, reduce heat and power draw, and help a laptop avoid thermal or power limits.

There is no universal cap that suits every PC and monitor. Test a limit your system can sustain during combat, not just in the practice range. Compare frame-time consistency and responsiveness, and configure the in-game and driver limits deliberately rather than stacking several caps without knowing which one is active.

Check Windows, laptop power, and background software

For laptops: verify power and GPU selection

  • Play while plugged in and compare with battery performance only as a diagnostic.
  • Check the manufacturer’s control software for silent, balanced, or performance modes; the selected mode can affect power and fan behavior.
  • Make sure the game uses the discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics when the laptop has both.
  • Use a hard surface, keep vents clear, and monitor temperatures and clock speeds under load.

Set an app-specific GPU preference in Windows 11

Windows 11 provides a per-application graphics preference at Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Add VALORANT, select Options, then choose High performance if the PC has a discrete GPU. The exact executable to add depends on the installation. Microsoft documents this setting and windowed-game optimizations on its page about optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. Windowed-game optimization is relevant when playing windowed or borderless; treat it as an A/B test, not a guaranteed FPS improvement.

Find background interruptions

Temporarily disable or close one potential source at a time: Xbox Game Bar capture if it is recording, Discord and graphics-driver overlays, other recording tools, browser video playback, RGB utilities, and motherboard or peripheral monitoring software. Check Resource Monitor for CPU, memory, or disk activity that coincides with a hitch.

Do not turn off security software, Riot Vanguard, Windows services, Memory Integrity, Secure Boot, or TPM as generic FPS fixes. Such changes can weaken security, create instability, or interfere with VALORANT’s requirements.

Troubleshoot stutters and frame-time spikes

A high average FPS does not guarantee smooth delivery. Look for brief frame-time spikes and investigate the moment they occur. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Note whether the problem began after a VALORANT, Windows, or graphics-driver update.
  2. Compare fullscreen with borderless or windowed mode, keeping other settings fixed.
  3. Disable overlays and recording tools one at a time.
  4. Monitor temperatures and clock speeds for a drop that lines up with the hitch.
  5. Check Resource Monitor for memory pressure, disk activity, or a background process consuming resources.
  6. Reset graphics-driver overrides to defaults and test a stable frame cap below the system’s erratic peak.
  7. Install chipset, graphics, network, or motherboard drivers from the relevant hardware manufacturer if a driver problem is plausible.
  8. If the cause remains unclear, use a clean boot to isolate third-party software while keeping the components VALORANT requires, including Vanguard.

Riot has noted that refocusing after Alt-Tab can interact with background-FPS limits in some situations. If stutters occur after switching windows, review the game’s background frame-rate settings and test without repeatedly Alt-Tabbing; see Riot’s gameplay consistency update.

Check for heat, power, memory, and storage limits

Temperature and power

A high temperature reading alone does not establish a fault. Look for a pattern: temperature rises, CPU or GPU clock speed falls, and FPS or frame time worsens; performance then recovers after cooling or reducing load. Clear dust from vents and filters, ensure laptop airflow is unobstructed, and check that fans work. Compare plugged-in and battery behavior, and inspect whether a quiet fan profile, weak power adapter, or configured power limit is holding clocks down. Avoid aggressive overclocking or undervolting unless you understand how to restore stable settings.

Memory

Riot’s 4 GB minimum is not a promise that Windows, VALORANT, voice chat, and other applications will run comfortably together. If available memory is exhausted, paging can cause hitching. Dual-channel memory can matter for integrated graphics and some CPU-limited systems, but adding RAM will not fix a GPU bottleneck when there is already ample free memory. XMP or EXPO can affect memory speed, but enable it only when the CPU and motherboard support it and the system remains stable.

Storage

An SSD can improve booting, launching, patching, and loading, and may reduce severe stalls caused by a slow, nearly full, or failing drive. It is not a guaranteed average-FPS upgrade, especially when VALORANT already runs from a healthy SSD and the actual limit is the CPU or GPU.

Configure NVIDIA or AMD latency options carefully

NVIDIA

If VALORANT offers NVIDIA Reflex on your system, test On first. Treat On + Boost as a separate latency experiment, not an automatic FPS improvement. Reflex may reduce queued frames and system latency; it is not a general-purpose FPS booster. NVIDIA distinguishes FPS throughput from latency in its Reflex Analyzer explanation. Avoid forcing multiple latency modes in the NVIDIA Control Panel and the game at once; document the setting you change and compare the result.

Get drivers from NVIDIA’s official driver page. If a problem began immediately after an update, test a known-stable previous driver. A clean installation is a later troubleshooting step if a normal update does not resolve the issue.

AMD

Keep AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition current through AMD’s support site and use per-game profiles rather than forcing settings globally. Check Radeon Chill and other frame caps, Enhanced Sync, VSync, Anti-Lag, and driver overrides if FPS is unexpectedly limited or behavior changed after an update. Anti-Lag is a latency feature, not a guaranteed FPS enhancer; do not stack it with every other latency setting without controlled testing. AMD documents its graphics settings and features.

Separate network problems from FPS problems

Client FPS is how quickly the PC renders frames; frame time describes how consistently they arrive. Ping is network round-trip time, packet loss means packets are not reliably reaching their destination, and server FPS reflects server processing. A faster GPU cannot lower ISP routing latency.

If ping or packet loss is the issue, restart the router and modem, test a wired connection, compare latency with other services, and contact the ISP if the evidence points to the connection. Riot’s network instability guide covers network troubleshooting. You can collect routing evidence with tracert <server-or-domain>; a timeout from an intermediate router alone does not prove that the route is failing, because some routers do not answer traceroute probes.

Decide whether a hardware upgrade is justified

Use the bottleneck you measured—not the FPS target alone—to decide whether to spend money.

Finding Upgrade or action to consider
GPU is consistently saturated, and reducing resolution or graphics settings helps A GPU upgrade or lower resolution/settings
CPU render time limits performance while the GPU is underused CPU/platform upgrade, after checking temperatures and background processes
Memory is nearly full and Resource Monitor shows paging More RAM; check memory-channel configuration too
Laptop clocks collapse under heat Improve airflow, service cooling, or consider a different system if the limitation cannot be resolved
Storage is slow, nearly full, failing, or causing obvious stalls Replace or upgrade storage; expect loading benefits, not a guaranteed average-FPS increase
Stable FPS exceeds the display’s refresh capability, but motion clarity is the concern Consider a higher-refresh monitor and verify the cable and display settings
Network graphs show high RTT or packet loss Investigate the router, wired connection, route, or ISP—not a GPU upgrade

Before buying, repeat the baseline test after reversible changes. Riot’s published 144+ FPS tier is a reference category, not proof that a system will hold that rate in every match.

When to contact Riot Support

If the issue persists, prepare a reproducible case rather than applying more system-wide tweaks. Record when it started, the game and driver changes around that date, your hardware and Windows version, the test situation, and the performance graphs. Capture a short video if the hitch is visible. If you suspect a software conflict, use a clean boot that preserves Vanguard requirements. For network issues, include relevant diagnostics and note whether a wired connection changes the result. Submit the details through VALORANT Player Support.

If you tested a driver rollback, frame cap, display mode, or graphics override, restore the original setting when it does not improve the repeatable test. Avoid registry “FPS tweaks,” timer-resolution utilities, random bcdedit commands, forced CPU affinity, disabling services blindly, or unofficial debloat scripts; they can introduce instability without addressing the measured bottleneck.
