2018 verdict by buyer
| Priority | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall library | PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro | Strong first-party games and broad third-party support |
| Best graphics | Xbox One X | Highest raw hardware performance in 2018 |
| Affordable Xbox and 4K disc player | Xbox One S | Lower price, UHD Blu-ray and Xbox software access |
| Nintendo games and portability | Nintendo Switch | One system for TV, tabletop and handheld play |
| Console virtual reality | PS4 or PS4 Pro | PlayStation VR was the mainstream console VR option |
The recommendation depends on your television, preferred games, existing friends and whether you need portability. There was no universal winner.

PlayStation 4 Slim versus PS4 Pro
The PS4 Slim was the value, largely 1080p-oriented model, with an approximate 2018 US position around $299.99 depending on storage and bundle. The PS4 Pro was about $399.99 and added a faster GPU, HDR support and game-specific enhancements for 4K displays. Improvements varied by title; “4K” could mean checkerboard or dynamic resolution rather than native 4K. The Pro also lacked a UHD Blu-ray drive, a significant omission for a 4K home-theater buyer. Model differences are outlined by GameSpot at this PS4 comparison.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Xbox One S versus Xbox One X
The Xbox One S was approximately $299.99 in 2018, often with changing bundles. It played the same broad Xbox One software family as the X, supported 4K video playback and included a UHD Blu-ray drive, but it was not a high-performance 4K gaming machine. The Xbox One X was about $499.99 and had substantially greater graphics capability, with native 4K in selected games and more consistent enhanced rendering. Technical comparisons are available from GameSpot and Windows Central.
Which Nintendo Switch?
The standard 2017-era Nintendo Switch was about $299.99 in the US in 2018, normally without a game. It is a hybrid console: dock it for TV play, use the tablet on a stand, or attach the Joy-Cons for handheld play. Do not assume every later Switch revision has identical battery life, screen or accessories. Confirm the exact model when buying used.
Game libraries
Why choose PlayStation 4
In 2018, PS4 was available with games including God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, The Last of Us Remastered and Gran Turismo Sport. PlayStation VR added a separate library. These were 2018 console-availability advantages, not permanent claims that every title would remain exclusive: some later reached PC or newer PlayStation hardware. Contemporary buying coverage generally favored PS4’s first-party lineup; see Scroll.in and The Guardian.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Why choose Xbox One
Xbox buyers had Forza Horizon 4, Forza Motorsport 7, Sea of Thieves, Gears of War 4, Halo 5, Killer Instinct and console access to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Xbox also emphasized cross-play, cross-save and continuity through Microsoft accounts. Backward compatibility covered selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles only; it was never universal.
Why choose Nintendo Switch
The Switch’s reason to exist was Nintendo software and flexible play, not graphics power. In 2018 its attractions included The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Octopath Traveler. Independent games also benefited from being playable away from the television. Many third-party games ran at lower resolution or performance than on PS4 and Xbox, a trade-off for the hybrid design.
Power, 4K, HDR and discs
The approximate 2018 performance order was Xbox One X, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and base PS4/PS4 Slim, then Nintendo Switch in docked mode. That ranking describes hardware capability, not value. A game’s patch determined whether a console used native 4K, checkerboard rendering, dynamic resolution, improved textures or steadier frame rates. Switch games targeted a different hardware class and should not be judged by resolution alone.

Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)

| PS4 Slim | Primarily 1080p | No UHD Blu-ray | Most non-4K buyers |
| Nintendo Switch | Not a 4K gaming system; up to 1080p docked output | No | Portable and Nintendo-focused play |

Portability and household use
Switch is the clear choice for commuting, travel, a shared television, a second room, short sessions and local multiplayer. It is not effortless portable play: battery life, game-card or download size, Wi-Fi and carrying a case and chargers all matter.
Recommended Free Tools
PS4 and Xbox One are better for long couch sessions, competitive shooters, sports games, traditional controllers and large third-party releases on a big display. If most play happens on one 4K television, the Pro or One X can make more sense; without a 4K/HDR set, paying the premium is harder to justify.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Online services and total ownership cost
Console price was only the start. Most paid online multiplayer required a subscription in 2018, although free-to-play exceptions and plan rules varied. PlayStation Plus supplied online play and monthly offerings; Xbox Live Gold did likewise while Microsoft’s subscription ecosystem was moving toward Game Pass; Nintendo Switch Online became a paid service in September 2018. Do not substitute current subscription prices for these historical terms.
- PS4 and Xbox One used internal hard drives and supported external USB storage.
- Switch digital purchases commonly required a microSD card.
- Extra Joy-Cons or a Switch Pro Controller could materially raise the Switch’s real entry cost.
- Budget for a second controller, one or two games, a year of online access and storage expansion.
- Physical games can be cheaper used; digital licenses remain tied to the platform account and may not transfer with a console.
Bundles and temporary sales changed the effective 2018 price. The period figures above are approximate US positioning, not timeless MSRPs; contemporary price context appears in Tom’s Guide, The Guardian and Engadget.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Virtual reality
PlayStation 4 was the only platform here with a mainstream, first-party-supported console VR option in 2018: PlayStation VR. A headset and, depending on the bundle, additional equipment were required. PS4 Pro could improve image quality or performance in some VR games, but it was not mandatory. VR is a deciding factor for interested buyers, not a reason for everyone to choose PlayStation.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Recommendations by situation
- Mainstream 2018 buyer: PS4 Slim for value, or PS4 Pro if you own a 4K/HDR TV and will use supported enhancements.
- 4K enthusiast: Xbox One X, especially if UHD Blu-ray matters; choose PS4 Pro instead when Sony’s games are the priority.
- Budget Xbox buyer: Xbox One S, understanding that its 4K strength is video playback rather than One X-level rendering.
- Nintendo fan, parent or shared-TV household: Nintendo Switch.
- Existing Xbox 360 owner: Xbox One family, after checking that your particular games are supported by backward compatibility.
- Existing PlayStation owner or friends on PlayStation: PS4, because accounts, friends and multiplayer libraries carry over most conveniently.
What this means in 2026
On August 18, 2026, PS4, Xbox One and the original Switch should generally be treated as used, refurbished or secondhand purchases. Compare the complete cost and warranty against current systems: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles and Nintendo Switch 2.
The official US Xbox store listed Series S 512GB at $399.99, Series S 1TB at $449.99, Series X 1TB at $649.99, Series X 1TB Digital Edition at $599.99 and Series X 2TB Galaxy Black at $799.99 when observed in August 2026. Microsoft announced an additional worldwide price update effective August 1, 2026; verify the live listing at Xbox’s official store and Microsoft’s announcement.
Nintendo announced that US Switch 2 MSRP would rise from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026; the original Switch price was unchanged in that announcement. See Nintendo’s notice. No current PS5 price is stated here because it was not independently verified.
Used-console inspection checklist
- Power on the system and confirm HDMI output.
- Test the disc drive where fitted, including installation and loading.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and verify account sign-in without accepting a seller’s account as your own.
- Check every controller for charging, button response and smooth analog movement; look specifically for Joy-Con drift.
- Install and launch a game, then watch for storage errors, crashes, excessive fan noise or overheating.
- For Switch, test both docked and handheld modes, the dock, Joy-Cons, proprietary power supply and tablet screen.
- Confirm all advertised accessories, cables and stands are present.
- Factory-reset the console before transferring it to the new owner.
Common risks include worn sticks, loud PS4 fans, Xbox disc-reading faults, failing storage drives, missing docks or power adapters, banned or compromised accounts, region restrictions and digital games that belong to the seller. Physical games may still need large patches, and online servers or store listings can change.
