Error 0x87DD0006 is generally associated with a failed Xbox profile or Xbox Network sign-in; it does not, by itself, mean your console is broken. First check whether Xbox services are having an outage. If they are available, work through the steps below from least disruptive to most disruptive—starting with a restart and network checks, not a factory reset.
What does error 0x87DD0006 mean?
The code is associated with an Xbox sign-in or authentication failure. It can appear during a service outage, a temporary sign-in problem, a network connection issue, or when the console has a stale local profile session. The code alone cannot identify which cause applies.
Do not confuse it with similar-looking codes such as 0x87DD0005, 0x87DD0017, or 0x8015DC12; Microsoft documents different causes for some Xbox sign-in and development-sandbox errors. See Microsoft’s Xbox sign-in troubleshooting documentation and the Xbox support page for 0x87DD0006.
Check Xbox service status before changing settings
Visit the Xbox service status page and look for incidents affecting Account & Profile, Social and Gaming, or other core Xbox services. If sign-in services are affected, wait for Microsoft to restore them and try again later. Console resets, repeated profile removal, and router changes cannot fix an Xbox-side outage.

If the status page shows everything is operational, continue below. A newly emerging or region-specific incident may not appear immediately; if several devices or friends also cannot connect, wait briefly and check again before making disruptive changes.
Fix 0x87DD0006 on Xbox One
1. Restart the console
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system, then choose Power.
- Select Restart console.
- After the console starts, try signing in again.
A restart can clear a temporary session problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
2. Test the Xbox network
- Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
- Select Test network connection.
- If that test succeeds, select Test multiplayer connection.
Note any result beyond the sign-in code, such as a DNS or DHCP failure, NAT type, UPnP failure, packet loss, or “Service info is unavailable.” These results help distinguish a connection issue from a profile or service problem.
3. Restart the modem and router, then isolate the connection
- Turn off or unplug your modem and router. If they are separate devices, restart the modem first and the router after it.
- Wait for the internet connection to return, then restart the Xbox and test sign-in.
- If possible, test the console using Ethernet or a phone hotspot.
- If sign-in works on a hotspot but not your home connection, investigate the home router, ISP, Wi-Fi, NAT, or DNS configuration.
- If it fails on both networks, the cause is more likely to involve the Xbox service, account, or console session.
- If another account works on this console, focus on the affected profile. If no account works, focus on service status, the network, or the console itself.
A work, school, hotel, or apartment network may restrict connections or require a captive-portal sign-in. VPNs and custom router rules can also complicate testing; temporarily disable them to see whether the result changes. Do not buy a replacement router based on this error alone.

4. Fully power-cycle the Xbox
If a normal restart does not help—or the console is frozen—hold the physical Xbox power button for about 10 seconds, until the console shuts down. Disconnect its power cable briefly, reconnect it, and turn the console on. A Microsoft Community troubleshooting response suggests disconnecting power for about five minutes when a restart does not resolve a sign-in problem; that is community guidance, not a guaranteed cure. 5. Remove and add the affected profile again
Try this when the network works but just one profile cannot sign in, particularly after a password change or a long time offline. Before removing the profile, make sure you know its Microsoft account email and password and can complete any required two-step verification.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose Account > Remove accounts.
- Select the affected profile and confirm removal.
- Restart the console.
- Return to the account area, choose Add new, and sign in with the Microsoft account.
Removing the profile takes it off this console; it does not delete the Microsoft account or normally delete cloud-synchronized saves or owned digital games. The profile must be downloaded again. Unsynchronized local save data is a separate concern, so avoid a destructive reset if you are unsure whether important saves have synced. 6. Clear the Alternate MAC address if network behavior is unusual
This is a secondary community-reported workaround, not a confirmed fix for every instance of this code. It is most relevant if the console has unusual network behavior or a previously configured alternate MAC address.

- Open Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings.
- Select Alternate MAC address, then choose Clear.
- Choose Restart when prompted, then test sign-in.
Clearing this setting does not erase games or profiles, though you may need to enter Wi-Fi details again if prompted. Menu wording can vary with dashboard updates. The workaround is described in an Xbox community discussion.
7. Check account access and security
- Confirm that you are using the Microsoft account linked to the Xbox profile, then try signing in at account.microsoft.com.
- Complete any security challenge or two-step verification prompt. If you recently changed the password, remove and add the profile again using the new credentials.
- Check whether the account is locked or whether family settings restrict a child account’s access or online play.
- If you suspect enforcement, check Xbox enforcement status separately; a suspension should not be assumed from this error code. Microsoft explains how to review an enforcement action at its Xbox Live suspension and ban page.
8. Investigate NAT or DNS only when test results point there
If the multiplayer test reports a NAT or UPnP problem, restart the router, try Ethernet, and enable UPnP if your router supports it. Avoid putting the Xbox behind multiple routers. If NAT remains unavailable or strict, ask your ISP or router manufacturer for help. NAT problems can affect multiplayer and party features, but do not prove they caused every sign-in failure.
Do not change DNS as a first-line fix: no particular DNS provider is established as the remedy for this code. If you understand manual network settings and want to test DNS, record the current values first, treat the change as an experiment, and restore Automatic settings if it does not help.
9. Reset the console only as a last resort
If Xbox services are online, other networks and profiles have not resolved the issue, and less disruptive steps have failed, consider Settings > System > Console info > Reset console > Reset and keep my games & apps. Check the on-screen options before confirming; Microsoft’s console reset instructions provide the current reference.

This option retains installed games and apps while refreshing the console software, but accounts, settings, and some locally stored data may need to be restored. Cloud saves should sync when the account reconnects; do not assume unsynchronized saves are safe. Reset and remove everything is a full wipe, not the recommended sign-in troubleshooting option.

Use the results you collected to describe the problem to Xbox Support. Include the exact code and message, whether all profiles fail, whether another network changes the result, and any network-test details such as NAT, DNS, or DHCP errors. If only one game fails while the main Xbox profile signs in normally, investigate that game or its backward-compatibility sign-in separately.
If the error appears only while downloading an Xbox 360 profile inside a backward-compatible game, do not assume the ordinary Xbox One sign-in path explains it. Check whether the modern profile signs in, whether multiple backward-compatible games behave the same way, and whether a different network changes the result. Reports of recent Xbox 360 profile-download issues are anecdotal, not proof of a general service problem: see one community report and another.
