Fix: Nintendo Switch Won’t Wake Up From Sleep

Remove the Switch from its dock, hold POWER for 20 seconds, then charge it directly with the correct adapter. Here’s how to tell whether the cause is a frozen system, low battery, dock, or hardware issue.

If your original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED will not wake, remove it from the dock, disconnect its AC adapter for 30 seconds, hold the console’s POWER button for 20 seconds, then connect the correct adapter directly to the console and press POWER once. If the battery may be empty, leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before trying again. This is a forced shutdown and restart, not a factory reset; it does not erase saved data. Nintendo Switch 2 has different adapter and dock requirements, noted below.

First, identify what is not responding

In ordinary Sleep Mode, pressing POWER or HOME wakes a Nintendo Switch. If neither button produces a response, the system may be frozen rather than asleep. A depleted battery can also leave the screen black, while a blank TV screen may be a dock, HDMI, or TV-input problem even if the console is running. Nintendo says Switch systems do not have a conventional power light, so the absence of a light does not diagnose the problem. Nintendo’s Sleep Mode guidance explains normal wake controls.

Force a shutdown and restart

  1. Remove the console from its dock. (Switch Lite does not support TV Mode and is not used with the standard dock.)
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter from both the wall outlet and the console or dock. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the console’s POWER button continuously for 20 seconds, then release it.
  4. Connect the correct AC adapter directly to the console and to a wall outlet.
  5. Press POWER once. If the screen remains black or a battery indicator appears only briefly, leave the console charging for at least 30 minutes, then press POWER again.

The 20-second hold is intentional for an unresponsive console. It is different from a normal three-second hold, which opens the Power Menu when the system is responsive. Nintendo gives the forced-shutdown procedure for a console with no power, a blank screen, or one that will not wake from Sleep Mode; it is a recovery step, not a guaranteed repair. See Nintendo’s no-power and blank-screen steps and its Power Menu instructions.

If the screen stays black, check charging

A nearly empty battery may keep the display dark even after the adapter is connected. The charging indicator may appear briefly in the upper-left corner and then disappear; that alone does not mean the console is broken. Charge directly from a wall outlet rather than using the dock while diagnosing, and allow at least 30 minutes when the battery may be depleted. Try another wall outlet if there is no response. Do not assume the battery is charging simply because a cable is plugged in. Nintendo’s charging troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 30 minutes for a nearly depleted console.

Check the adapter and USB-C port

Use the adapter intended for the console generation. The original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED use Nintendo AC adapter model HAC-002. Switch 2 uses model NGN-01; see the model-specific note below. Inspect the adapter and cable for fraying, splits, loose connectors, severe kinks, or other damage. Nintendo warns that damaged or non-licensed adapters can have compatibility problems.

  • If no charging indicator appears, verify the adapter model and try another wall outlet.
  • If possible, test the adapter with another Nintendo USB-C product, such as a Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Stand, or the console dock.
  • Look at the console’s USB-C port for visible damage, looseness, bent parts, burning, or an obstruction. Do not insert metal tools or liquids, force debris into the port, or continue charging a visibly damaged device.
  • If a known-good compatible adapter powers another Nintendo device but the Switch remains blank, the console or its USB-C port may need service. If the adapter fails with another compatible device too, replace the failed or damaged adapter rather than concluding that the console is defective.

Nintendo’s no-power guidance identifies HAC-002 for the original Switch family and recommends checking the adapter and console connector.

What you see What to do next
POWER and HOME do nothing Use the 20-second forced shutdown, then connect the adapter directly to the console.
A battery indicator appears briefly, then the screen goes black Charge for at least 30 minutes before pressing POWER again.
No charging indicator appears Check the correct adapter model, wall outlet, adapter condition, and USB-C port; test the adapter with another compatible Nintendo product if possible.
Handheld mode works, but the TV is blank Check the dock, HDMI connection, TV input, and appropriate AC adapter rather than treating this as a Sleep Mode failure.
The console starts but repeatedly sleeps sooner than expected Review the Sleep Mode settings after it is responsive.
It remains unresponsive after the recovery and charging checks Stop troubleshooting and request Nintendo service.

If handheld works but the TV does not

When a compatible Switch is docked, its own screen turns off because the picture is shown on the TV. Remove it from the dock and confirm that the console screen works before diagnosing the dock. If handheld mode works but TV mode does not, check that the HDMI cable is connected, the TV is on the correct input, and the dock is receiving the appropriate adapter. Switch Lite does not support TV Mode. Nintendo’s TV connection guidance covers the adapter requirement for connecting to a TV.

Switch 2 uses a different adapter and dock setup

For Nintendo Switch 2, the dedicated adapter is model NGN-01. Nintendo says the original Switch HAC-002 adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot charge Switch 2 through the Switch 2 dock or provide Switch 2 TV-mode power through that dock. Do not treat HAC-002 as the correct adapter for every Switch generation or assume original Switch dock advice applies unchanged. Nintendo’s Switch 2 power and charging guidance details these distinctions.

After it turns on, update the system and review Sleep Mode

Once the console is responsive, check for an update: open System Settings, select System, then System Update. An update is not a fix to try while the console is completely unresponsive.

If the console repeatedly behaves unexpectedly around Sleep Mode, open System Settings and select Sleep Mode. Review Auto-Sleep (Playing on Console Screen), Auto-Sleep (Connected to TV), Suspend Auto-Sleep While Playing Media Content, and Wake When AC Adapter Is Disconnected. Nintendo lists console-screen auto-sleep intervals of 1, 3, 5, 10, or 30 minutes; TV-mode intervals of 1, 2, 3, 6, or 12 hours, plus Never. These settings can change when the console sleeps or wakes; they will not unfreeze a system that is currently stuck. See Nintendo’s Sleep Mode settings instructions and its post-recovery update guidance.

When to stop and request service

Contact Nintendo support if the console remains unresponsive after the forced shutdown, direct charging, and adapter checks, or if a known-good adapter powers another Nintendo device but not the Switch. Service is also appropriate if the USB-C port is visibly damaged or the console shows liquid or impact damage, or if it briefly indicates a charge but never starts after adequate charging.

If the console is unusually hot, smells unusual, emits smoke, or has a swollen battery, stop using and charging it; do not continue the normal troubleshooting steps. Do not open the console or attempt a battery replacement without repair expertise. Nintendo’s support page directs users to service when the recommended checks do not resolve the issue and recommends including the AC adapter for testing. The cited support pages are for Nintendo of America; service availability and terms depend on country and device condition. Nintendo of America support.
