Start with the least destructive fix: update and restart the host, charge the controller, press SYNC once and then another button, and pair from HOME → Controllers → Change Grip and Order. If you are using USB, change both the cable and dock port. On Windows, remove the old Bluetooth entry and pair it again. This sequence resolves most connection failures; a controller that still fails both wireless and USB tests may need service.
First identify the hardware and host. The original official Switch Pro Controller is model HAC-013. A Switch 2 Pro Controller is a different product, and third-party controllers can use different pairing and firmware procedures.
Identify the failure before changing settings
| What you see | Likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| No LEDs or response | Battery, charging path, USB cable/port, or hardware | Charge with a known-good setup, then test another cable and port |
| Player LEDs scroll but pairing never finishes | Pairing state, controller limit, interference, or wrong model | Reset the wireless state and retry from Change Grip and Order |
| Pairs, then disconnects | Stale pairing record, another host, low battery, interference, or driver | Remove old pairing records and keep other hosts away |
| Works wirelessly but not through USB | Charge-only cable, dock port, wired-communication setting, or USB data fault | Use a known-good data cable and another dock port |
| Works through USB but not wirelessly | Wireless state, interference, or wireless hardware | Press SYNC once, wake it, and pair again |
| Windows says Connected but a game has no input | Steam Input or game configuration | Test Windows game-controller detection, then configure the game |
Do not diagnose Bluetooth until the controller powers on. Disconnect it from nearby phones, tablets, PCs, and other consoles while testing so another host cannot claim the connection.
Fastest fix on Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED
- Update the console. Install any available system update.
- Restart it. Hold POWER for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, then Restart.
- Charge the controller. Use the Nintendo charging setup or another known-good compatible source. The official cable referenced by Nintendo is model HAC-010.
- Reset its wireless state. Press SYNC once, then press A or another button to wake the controller.
- Open the pairing screen. Select HOME → Controllers → Change Grip and Order.
- Pair it. Hold SYNC for at least one second. The player LEDs should stop scrolling when pairing completes.
Nintendo’s official pairing and sync procedure is documented at Nintendo Support and the Pro Controller pairing guide.

If the console has too many remembered controllers
Go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Disconnect Controllers, then hold X when prompted. This clears wireless controller pairings, not save data or the console operating system. Pair every controller again afterward.
If Bluetooth audio is connected
Disconnect the Bluetooth audio device while pairing. Nintendo limits the system to two wireless controllers when Bluetooth audio is connected. In general, Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be connected to a Switch or Switch 2, but the usable number varies with controller type, features, and software.
Remove interference
Test with the dock in the open and close to the console, rather than behind a television or inside a cabinet. Keep it away from metal objects, wireless speakers, cordless phones, and other crowded 2.4-GHz devices; Nintendo suggests roughly three to four feet of separation from other wireless equipment where possible.
Switch Lite: wireless first, wired only with the right accessory
Pair a Pro Controller to Switch Lite through HOME → Controllers → Change Grip and Order, using the SYNC reset and pairing steps above. A Switch Lite does not provide the same dock-based wired pairing path as a standard Switch. Nintendo says wired Pro Controller use with Lite requires a compatible licensed accessory, such as a supported USB playstand. An ordinary cable plugged into a power-only arrangement is not a guaranteed wired connection.
See Nintendo’s pairing guidance for the Switch Lite limitation: Nintendo Support.

Switch 2 uses a different pairing path
Update the Switch 2, press any button on the Pro Controller to power it on, and let the console attempt pairing. If it fails, press SYNC once, press another button, then retry. For a USB diagnosis, try another dock USB port, another known-good data cable, and another dock if available.
Nintendo specifically says an original Switch Pro Controller cannot be paired to Switch 2 using the USB charging-cable method used with the original console. Do not treat USB failure on Switch 2 as proof that the controller is defective. Nintendo also states that the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is compatible only with Switch 2; do not assume it works with an original Switch, PC, or phone.

Reset, update, and test the controller
Wireless reset is not a factory reset
Pressing SYNC once and then another button resets the controller’s wireless state and does not delete save data. Disconnect Controllers only removes remembered wireless pairings. A normal console restart reboots the system software. Do not initialize or factory-reset the console for this symptom; it is disproportionate and risks data loss.
Install controller firmware
Once the console recognizes the controller, open HOME → System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Update Controllers. If an update stops before completion, Nintendo’s guidance is to try the update again: Pro Controller buttons and input support.

- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
- Includes motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality, and more.
- Comes with charging cable (USB-C to USB-A)
Run an input test
Use the controller input-test tools in Controllers and Sensors. A controller can be connected while a button, stick, or mapping is faulty. Persistent incorrect input, a failed test, or repeated firmware-update failure points toward service rather than more pairing attempts.
When USB charging works but USB connection does not
- A charging cable may carry power but no data. Use the original HAC-010 cable or another known-good USB data cable.
- Connect to the dock, not merely to a power-only charger, and try every dock USB port.
- Avoid unpowered hubs while diagnosing.
- Test a different dock if one is available.
- On Switch Lite, use a compatible licensed wired accessory.
If the controller charges but is never detected over USB, the cable, dock port, controller USB socket, or data circuitry is more likely than Bluetooth. If it also fails wireless pairing on multiple compatible hosts, hardware service becomes the sensible next step. Nintendo’s wired-communication information is available at Nintendo’s Pro Controller support page.

Bluetooth pairing
- Charge the controller and keep it close to the PC.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Remove stale entries named “Pro Controller,” “Nintendo Switch Pro Controller,” “Wireless Gamepad,” or duplicate equivalents.
- Restart Windows.
- Press the controller’s SYNC button to enter pairing mode.
- Choose Add device → Bluetooth, then select the controller.
If pairing still fails, confirm the PC’s Bluetooth hardware switch (if present), install Windows and Bluetooth-driver updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Microsoft’s troubleshooting references are Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows and How to connect a controller on Windows 11.
USB detection
Connect directly to the PC, not a hub. Try another port—on a desktop, a rear motherboard port can provide a useful comparison—and another data-capable cable. Check whether Windows detects a new game-controller or HID device. If it detects nothing, focus on the cable, USB port, controller socket, or Windows device enumeration before changing Steam settings.

Why “Connected” can still mean no game input
- Pairing: Bluetooth or USB establishes a connection.
- Operating-system input: Windows exposes the controller to applications.
- Game layer: Steam Input or the game maps and accepts those inputs.
A controller can pass the first layer and fail the third. For a Steam game, enable the title’s controller support or Steam Input in its controller properties and test the layout. Steam is an input-management option, not a requirement for every Windows game, and it cannot repair a controller that Windows does not detect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the symptom to choose the next action
| Symptom | First action | Next action | Service signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| No lights after charging | Different data cable and power/dock port | Test another compatible host | No response on any setup |
| LEDs scroll indefinitely on Switch | SYNC once, wake, then Change Grip and Order | Disconnect old pairings and Bluetooth audio | Fails wireless and USB tests |
| USB charges but is not detected | Known-good data cable and another dock port | Try another dock or PC | Never detected anywhere |
| Windows pairs but a game does not respond | Verify Windows game-controller detection | Configure Steam Input or the game | Only hardware-level detection fails |
| Connection drops repeatedly | Remove stale records and nearby hosts | Reduce interference and recharge | Dropouts on multiple hosts |
When to seek service or replace a part
- The controller shows no LEDs after charging and cable/port tests.
- It is not detected on multiple compatible hosts.
- It cannot pair wirelessly or through USB after the official procedure.
- An input test fails, or incorrect inputs persist after firmware update and mapping checks.
- Firmware updates repeatedly fail.
- The controller has liquid or physical damage.
For an official controller meeting those conditions, Nintendo’s guidance is to seek service through its support flow: Unable to pair or sync Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Buy a replacement cable only when USB testing identifies the cable; consider a licensed Switch Lite accessory only for wired Lite use; and consider a Windows Bluetooth adapter only when the PC’s Bluetooth hardware is the demonstrated bottleneck.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Switch Pro Controller blink but not connect?
The LEDs indicate pairing mode, but the host has not completed the connection. Press SYNC once, press another button, open Change Grip and Order, and hold SYNC for at least one second. Also check controller limits, Bluetooth audio, stale pairings, and interference.
Why does it charge but not connect by USB?
Charging only proves that power reaches the controller. The cable may be charge-only, the dock port may be faulty, or the controller’s USB data path may have failed. Try a known-good data cable, every dock port, and another dock or PC.
Why is it connected to Windows but not working in Steam?
Bluetooth pairing and game input are separate layers. Confirm Windows detects the controller as a game device, then enable or configure Steam Input for that game. Steam cannot fix a controller that Windows does not detect.

Can a Switch Pro Controller connect to Switch Lite?
Yes, wirelessly. Wired use requires a compatible licensed accessory; the Lite does not provide the standard dock-based wired path.
Can the original Pro Controller connect to Switch 2?
Nintendo states that the original controller cannot be paired to Switch 2 using the USB charging-cable method used with the original console. Follow the Switch 2 wireless procedure and do not assume cross-generation compatibility for every controller model.
How do I reset the controller without deleting anything?
Press SYNC once, then press another button. This resets the wireless state. It does not erase save data. Disconnect Controllers clears remembered wireless pairings but does not factory-reset the console.
How many controllers can connect to Switch?
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can connect, but the usable number varies by controller type, features, and software. With Bluetooth audio connected, Nintendo limits the system to two wireless controllers.
Do I need a new controller if Bluetooth fails?
Not immediately. First test charging, SYNC reset, console restart, another host, another cable and dock port, and firmware/input diagnostics. Replacement or service becomes reasonable when both wireless and USB tests fail or there is physical damage.
