CE-100006-7 means your PS5 cannot recognize an external USB storage drive. Stop the current transfer, do not format a drive containing unbacked-up data, then reconnect the drive directly to the console without a USB hub. Sony’s official troubleshooting steps are documented on its CE-100006-7 support page.
What CE-100006-7 means
This is primarily an external-storage recognition or transfer error. It commonly appears while moving, installing, downloading, or launching content involving a USB hard drive or SSD. The code does not by itself prove that a game is corrupted, that PlayStation Network is unavailable, or that the PS5 console has failed.
Typical situations include a drive being disconnected during activity, a cable or port problem, a USB hub, an incompatible or unprepared filesystem, or a drive that is beginning to fail. These are possible explanations rather than individually confirmed causes for every incident.
Do this first: protect the data
- Stop the transfer or installation.
- Do not choose a format option if the drive contains games, saves, captures, or other files you still need.
- Do not repeatedly unplug the drive while the PS5 is reading or writing. Shut the console down fully, or use the PS5’s safe-disconnect control when available, before removing it.
Formatting a drive as PS5 extended storage normally removes its existing contents. Installed games can usually be downloaded again, but that does not make formatting harmless: verify that valuable save data is backed up or synchronized separately first.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Fix CE-100006-7 in order
-
Update PS5 system software
Open the PS5 system-software update screen from Settings and install any available update. Restart the console afterward. Sony lists updating system software as the first CE-100006-7 step; menu wording can vary by system version and region.
-
Restart the PS5 normally
Perform a complete shutdown, wait for the console to power off, and start it again. This is a low-risk diagnostic step, not a guarantee that a failing drive will recover.
-
Reconnect the drive directly
With the PS5 fully shut down, disconnect and reconnect both ends of the USB cable. Connect the storage device straight to the console. Sony specifically advises removing any USB hub on its error-code page.
-
Try another cable and USB port
Use a known-good compatible cable if one is available, and test another PS5 USB port. If the drive works in one port but not another, the port, cable, or power delivery is a likely factor.

Check whether the drive appears in Storage
Look under the PS5 storage settings. A drive that is visible there may have a transfer or game-eligibility issue; a drive that never appears points more strongly to connection, formatting, compatibility, or hardware trouble.
-
Prepare the drive as extended storage when appropriate
A normal computer drive is not automatically a PS5 extended-storage drive. Sony’s first-use path is Settings > Storage > Extended Storage. Use the official extended-storage guide to check current USB, capacity, and model requirements.
-
Transfer one item at a time
Sony recommends individual transfers when a bulk transfer fails. If one title fails while others succeed, investigate that installation or content package. If every transfer fails, suspect the drive, cable, port, or its preparation. Small transfers succeeding does not prove that an intermittently failing drive is healthy.
-
Confirm the title’s storage eligibility
Check whether the particular game data can use extended storage. A PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game can have different storage behavior, and add-ons or selective-installation components may be handled separately.

Test another known-compatible drive
Sony recommends trying another storage device. If a second drive works, the original drive, its cable, or its formatting is the leading suspect. If no compatible drive works, the PS5’s ports, software, or hardware need closer attention.
When formatting is safe—and when it is not
Format only when the drive is new, expendable, or completely backed up and you intend to dedicate it to PS5 extended storage. A drive previously used on a PC, Mac, Xbox, or another console may use a filesystem the PS5 cannot use, but reformatting still destroys the existing contents. Back up first.
If a drive that worked previously suddenly asks to be formatted, do not treat that prompt as a routine reset. A loose connection, interrupted read/write, filesystem corruption, or failing hardware may be involved. Formatting can remove the symptom while leaving a physical problem unresolved.
If only one game triggers the error
First test another title or transfer. If the drive remains stable and the failure is isolated to one game, delete and reinstall that game. Game/application data is separate from save data, but verify your save backup before deleting anything. Digital games can be redownloaded from the purchasing account’s library; disc games generally require the disc for reinstalling or launching. Downloaded add-ons may need to be installed again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReinstalling is not the main response when the PS5 cannot recognize the drive at all. Resolve the storage-recognition problem first.
If no external drive is connected
Some owners report seeing this code without intentionally attaching USB storage, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a confirmed Sony explanation. Shut the PS5 down, disconnect every USB storage device, hub, and nonessential USB accessory, then restart it. Install any pending system-software update and check whether the error remains across unrelated games.
If the code continues with no external storage attached, contact PlayStation Support rather than buying a drive immediately.
USB extended storage versus an internal M.2 SSD
| Storage type | What it is useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | Storing PS5 games and storing or playing compatible PS4 games | PS5 games cannot be played directly from it; copy them to internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD first |
| Internal M.2 SSD | Expanding playable PS5 and PS4 storage inside the console | Requires a compatible drive, suitable speed and heatsink, and physical installation |
Sony explains the USB playback limitation in its April 2021 storage update. An M.2 SSD is not a repair for a defective USB drive or PS5 USB port; verify Sony’s current specifications before purchasing one.

Should you rebuild the database?
Database rebuilding is a secondary, non-guaranteed measure, not Sony’s CE-100006-7 first-line fix. It may help with catalog or index problems after connection and storage checks, but it cannot repair a bad cable, damaged port, insufficient power, failing flash memory, or bad sectors. Some publishers discuss it for broader game failures, including Capcom and Square Enix. Do not choose Reset PS5 or reinstall system software early; those actions are substantially more disruptive.
Read the result of each test
| Observed result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Reconnect fixes the error | Temporary recognition, cable, port, or connection issue |
| Direct connection works but a hub fails | Hub compatibility, power, or hub failure |
| Only one game fails | Game installation, content package, or transfer-specific issue |
| Every transfer fails on one drive | Formatting, filesystem, cable, or drive hardware issue |
| Another drive works | Original drive or its cable is the leading suspect |
| No drive works | PS5 port, system software, or console hardware issue |
| Drive repeatedly asks to be formatted | Possible incompatible format, corruption, or failing drive |
When to replace the drive or contact Sony
Replacement is more reasonable when the drive repeatedly disconnects, corrupts data, becomes unusually hot, makes abnormal noises, fails with multiple cables or ports, or fails on another compatible device. A computer recognizing it does not prove PS5 compatibility or health.
Use Sony support or the PlayStation repair flow when multiple known-compatible drives fail, no USB port works, the console freezes during storage access, or continuing tests could risk important data. Have the error code, PS5 model, drive model and capacity, cable and port used, software-update status, and results from your second-drive test ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play PS5 games from a USB external drive?
No. USB extended storage can store PS5 games, but you must copy a PS5 game to internal storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD to play it. Compatible PS4 games can be played from USB extended storage.

Will formatting erase my games?
Formatting as PS5 extended storage normally erases the drive. Back up anything important and confirm save-data protection before formatting.
Does CE-100006-7 mean my PS5 is broken?
No. Reconnection, a cable, a hub, formatting, or the drive itself can cause recognition failure. If multiple known-compatible drives fail, console hardware becomes more likely.
Should I use a USB hub?
No while diagnosing this code. Sony recommends connecting the storage device directly to the PS5.
What if the drive works on my PC?
Computer recognition does not prove that its filesystem, partitioning, power arrangement, or capacity is suitable for PS5 extended storage.
Will deleting a game delete my save?
Game/application installation data and save data are separate, but verify backups before deleting or reinstalling anything.
