“Startup error” can mean anything from Steam returning to the Play button to an EA AntiCheat failure or a console that freezes. There is no single fix for all of them. First check service status, then follow the steps for the point where your game stops; on PC, clear the EA app cache and repair files before attempting a reinstall.
Start with these low-risk checks
- Check EA server status and the status of your platform. EA lists EA SPORTS FC 26 and the EA app separately. An outage affecting sign-in or online services is not something a local reinstall can fix.
- Restart your PC or console. On PC, close FC 26 and the EA app, Steam, and Epic Games Launcher, then open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Escand end any remaining game or launcher processes. - Temporarily close overlays, capture tools, mod managers, VPNs, hardware-monitoring utilities, and game boosters. Try launching from the store where you bought the game. Do not permanently disable antivirus or other security protection.
- Check that the device meets the requirements below and install pending system and game updates.
- On PC, clear the EA app cache and repair or verify the game files before considering a reinstall.
If only online modes fail while the game reaches its menus, focus on service status, account authentication, and connection issues rather than graphics or installation fixes.

Identify where startup stops
| What happens | Start with |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens after selecting Play | Launcher handoff, account sign-in, AntiCheat, permissions, or damaged installation |
| EA app opens or stays on “Preparing,” then closes or stalls | EA app cache, app installation, sign-in, or conflicting background software |
| Steam says “Launching,” then returns to Play | EA app handoff, linked account, AntiCheat, or overlays |
| FC 26 logo appears, then the game closes | AntiCheat, Secure Boot, GPU driver, overlay, or local configuration |
| Black screen | Display mode, overlay, GPU driver, or local graphics configuration |
| An EA AntiCheat window appears before the game closes | AntiCheat, Secure Boot and firmware status, or conflicting low-level software |
| “Too many computers have accessed this account recently” | EA account/device authorization, not a graphics setting |
| PS4 version will not load | Confirm the download is complete; PlayStation documents a failure when the game is started before completion while the console language is not English |
These are starting points, not guaranteed diagnoses. If your screen shows an error code, record the exact wording and use the relevant EA or platform support route.

| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10/11, 64-bit, latest update | Not separately stated by EA |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i5-6600K | AMD Ryzen 7 2700X or Intel Core i7-6700 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD RX 570 or NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti | AMD RX 5600 XT or NVIDIA GTX 1660 |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 100 GB | 100 GB |
| Internet | 512 Kbps | Not separately stated by EA |
The 100 GB figure is the listed storage requirement; updates and temporary files can require additional free space. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee stable operation: drivers, Windows components, a nearly full or unwritable drive, overheating, or an unusual Windows build can still prevent launch. If FC 26 is on an external or nearly full drive, check free space and write access before reinstalling.
Fix PC launcher and game-file problems
Clear the EA app cache
- In the EA app, select the three-line menu in the upper-left corner, then choose Help > App Recovery > Clear Cache.
- If the app will not open, use the Windows Start menu: select All Apps, expand the EA folder, open App Recovery, and select Clear Cache.
- Restart the PC and try FC 26 again.
EA says cache clearing can help if the app is stuck offline, will not update, or does not recognize games; it will not resolve a server outage. See EA’s cache-clearing instructions.
Repair or verify FC 26
- EA app: Open Library, find FC 26, select the three-dot menu on its tile, then choose Repair. Wait for it to finish, restart the EA app, and launch.
- Steam: Open Library, right-click FC 26, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Labels can change with Steam updates. Restart Steam and the EA app afterward. See Steam’s FC 26 technical support page.
- Epic Games Store: Open the game’s Manage menu and choose Verify. If Epic reports an EA partner-application error, restart Epic and allow the EA app to install or open when prompted. See Epic’s EA partner-application launch guidance.
A clean verification result means the launcher did not find damaged files; it does not rule out account, AntiCheat, driver, or background-software problems. EA also recommends repair for games that will not load in its EA app loading troubleshooting guide.
Turn off overlays for a test
- Open the EA app, select your profile thumbnail, and choose Settings > Application.
- Turn In-game overlay off, restart the app, and test FC 26.
- If it still fails, also disable overlays in Steam, Discord, NVIDIA or AMD software, and Xbox Game Bar for a test.
EA recommends testing without its overlay and turning it back on if it was not the cause. Re-enable any overlay you use after testing if it makes no difference.
Recommended Free Tools
Update Windows and graphics drivers
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Install a current graphics driver using the GPU manufacturer’s official software or website.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
EA includes Windows and graphics-driver updates among its loading troubleshooting steps. If the failure began immediately after a GPU-driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported process to return to a previous stable driver as a diagnostic test; there is no guarantee that a rollback will fix FC 26. Avoid unofficial DLL-download sites and third-party driver-updater utilities.

Check EA AntiCheat, Secure Boot, and account handoff
If AntiCheat appears and startup stops
EA says some games using its Javelin AntiCheat require Secure Boot. Its Secure Boot guide describes prerequisites including TPM 2.0, a Windows disk using GPT, and firmware configured for UEFI. Check status before changing firmware:
- Press
Windows key + R, entermsinfo32, and check BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State. - Press
Windows key + Ragain, entertpm.msc, and check whether TPM is present and ready. - If a setting is missing or off, consult your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions and EA’s current guidance before making changes.
Do not change BIOS settings blindly. A system using Legacy/CSM boot or an MBR disk may need more than toggling Secure Boot. Back up important files; if BitLocker is enabled, save its recovery key before changing firmware or boot settings. If Secure Boot is already on, continue with Windows updates, AntiCheat and game repair, and background-software checks rather than assuming the setting is the cause.
If Steam or Epic returns to its Play button
Steam and Epic purchases still rely on the EA app and a linked EA account. Sign into the EA account that owns access, confirm the purchasing account is linked to the right EA account, and try opening the EA app first before launching FC 26 through the store. Avoid repeatedly switching accounts or unlinking accounts casually; that can complicate access and progression. For account-access errors, use the EA FC 26 support hub rather than reinstalling repeatedly.
Use a clean boot to find conflicting software
Try a clean boot if FC 26 closes without an error, stopped working after installing another app or driver, or still fails after cache and file repair. EA recommends clean booting as part of its crashing and freezing troubleshooting.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your version of Windows, taking care to hide Microsoft services before disabling other services.
- Restart and test FC 26.
- If it launches, restore normal startup and re-enable services and startup apps in batches until the conflict returns. Narrow the cause to the last batch rather than leaving Windows permanently in a diagnostic configuration.
If it still fails in a clean boot, restore normal startup and continue with the other relevant checks.

Repair the EA app or missing runtime components
Consider reinstalling the EA app if it will not open, update, or hand off the game even after cache clearing and a restart. EA’s EA app error-code guidance also points to Microsoft Visual C++ components for some installation errors.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the EA app using EA’s official download source.
- Install supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages only if the error or EA guidance supports that step. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Restart again, repair FC 26 files, and test launch.
Do not download individual vcruntime, msvcp, or other DLL files from third-party sites. Reinstalling the game is a later step for a damaged or incomplete installation; it will not fix service outages, account authorization, or firmware configuration.
PlayStation and Xbox startup fixes
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
- Wait until the full download and installation complete, then restart the console and check for game and system updates.
- On PS4, PlayStation documents a specific loading issue if the game is started before fully downloading while the system language is not English. Let the download finish and restart the game; see PlayStation’s FC support page.
- If the game appears locked or ownership is not recognized, check the signed-in account and restore licenses using PlayStation’s current console instructions.
- If the installation appears damaged, reinstall only after checking service status and updates. Treat database rebuilding as an advanced platform-specific step and follow PlayStation’s instructions for the console model.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Quit FC 26 fully from Home, then restart the console.
- Check for game and console updates, and confirm the intended edition is installed.
- If it remains stuck, use the console’s power-cycle procedure and check Xbox service status.
- Reinstall only after checking the account, services, and updates.
Do not delete saved data as an early troubleshooting step. A local cache or local copy is not the same as a cloud-synchronized save; verify synchronization and understand the console’s data-removal options before deleting anything.
Protect local saves and settings
If FC 26 reaches its menus, EA provides an in-game corrupt-file procedure: go to Customise > Profile > Delete. EA warns that deleting Career files can permanently remove those saves; deleting Personal Settings 1 removes Skill Game progress and custom controller layouts. Retain Online Profiles, Career files, and Personal Settings 1 unless you knowingly accept those losses. See EA’s corrupt-file instructions.
This menu procedure cannot help if the game fails before reaching its menus. Do not delete the entire Documents/EA SPORTS FC 26 folder without first backing it up and understanding what settings or saves it contains.
When to stop changing local files
- The EA status page or platform status reports an outage: wait for the provider to resolve it.
- The failure began after an update and is also affecting other players or devices: check EA announcements and support before reinstalling repeatedly; timing alone does not prove the update caused it.
- The same account or game fails across multiple systems after local repairs: prioritize account, service, or game-side support.
- The problem occurs only in one Windows user profile: check Documents-folder permissions, OneDrive redirection, and possible profile issues.
- A mod was installed: remove it and restore an unmodified installation before diagnosing the game.
- Reinstalling has not changed the symptom: investigate the failing layer—service, launcher, authentication, AntiCheat, driver, or conflicting software—instead of repeating the same install.
Contact support with useful details
If the issue persists, submit a report through EA’s technical issues hub or the relevant platform support channel. Include the exact error text or code, platform and edition, store used, Windows version and build (for PC), GPU and driver version, whether AntiCheat appeared, and what changed just before the failure. Attach a DxDiag report or error report if support requests it. This helps distinguish a local launch problem from account or service trouble.
