Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChanging a PlayStation 3 from HDMI or component to composite is a compatibility fix, not a picture-quality upgrade. Connect a PS3-compatible cable to the console’s AV MULTI OUT port, connect yellow/red/white plugs to the display, choose the correct input, and set Settings → Display Settings → Video Output Settings to the analog AV connection. If the screen stays blank, use the PS3’s second-beep video reset.
What composite means on a PS3
Composite video combines the picture into one analog signal carried by the yellow RCA plug. The white plug carries left or mono audio, and the red plug carries right audio. Unlike many devices, a PS3 does not have a yellow RCA socket. Its analog output is the proprietary AV MULTI OUT connector, so the console end of the cable must be made for PS3.
| Connector or plug | Function |
|---|---|
| PS3 AV MULTI plug | Connects to the console’s AV MULTI OUT port |
| Yellow RCA | Composite video |
| White RCA | Left or mono audio |
| Red RCA | Right audio |
Sony’s setup documentation shows the AV MULTI OUT connection and matching colored TV inputs: PS3 getting-started guide.
Do not confuse composite with component. Component uses red, green and blue video plugs plus red and white audio; those connections are not interchangeable. HDMI carries digital audio and video. SCART is a regional connector format that may be grouped with AV MULTI options in PS3 menus.

- Compatibility Reminder--This is a 3-connector RCA composite AV cable for PS1/PS2/PS3. Please ensure your display has red/yellow/white RCA composite ports before purchase; it is not compatible with 5-port component video inputs. If your device only has an HDMI port, you’ll need an RCA to HDMI converter (not included)!!!
When composite is useful
- An older television or CRT has yellow/red/white inputs but no usable HDMI port.
- An HDMI handshake or HDCP problem prevents a picture.
- You are connecting to an older capture device or AV receiver.
- You need a fallback connection while diagnosing a suspected HDMI problem.
- Your display accepts only analog standard-definition video.
Composite normally outputs standard definition: generally 480i in NTSC regions such as the United States and 576i in PAL regions. The exact signal and menu wording depend on region, model, language and firmware.
What you need
- A PS3-compatible AV cable with a proprietary AV MULTI plug and yellow, red and white RCA connectors.
- A television, converter or capture device with composite video and stereo-audio inputs.
- A PS3 controller; a USB cable is useful if the controller is not already paired.
- The TV remote for selecting the correct input.
Check that the cable specifically lists PS3 compatibility. A generic three-plug RCA lead without the AV MULTI console connector cannot connect directly to a PS3.
Connect the PS3 to the display
- Turn off the PS3 and television.
- Insert the proprietary end fully into the PS3’s AV MULTI OUT port.
- Connect yellow to the TV’s composite Video In, white to Left Audio In, and red to Right Audio In.
- If the television has a shared yellow/green socket, confirm in its input menu or manual that the socket can be switched to composite. Do not assume a green component input accepts yellow video.
- Turn on the television and select the input labelled AV, Video, Composite or a similar regional label.
- Turn on the PS3.
Change the PS3’s video-output setting
- On the XMB, open Settings → Display Settings → Video Output Settings.
- Choose the analog connector, commonly labelled AV MULTI/SCART.
- When prompted, select Composite.
- Accept the standard-definition resolution and aspect-ratio choices only after confirming the picture is visible.
Sony documents this settings route in its PS3-related display instructions: video-output settings manual. Labels can differ slightly by system language, model and documentation version.
If the screen is blank: use the second-beep reset
This is the key recovery step when the PS3 was configured for HDMI and cannot display through the newly connected composite cable.

- Make sure the composite cable is connected and the TV is on the correct input.
- Turn the PS3 completely off until the indicator is red.
- Press and hold the console’s power button.
- Keep holding it until you hear a second beep, generally after about five seconds.
- Allow the PS3 to restart and detect the analog display, then choose the composite settings when prompted.
Sony describes this procedure for no-video situations in its PS3 quick-start guide. It resets video-output detection and settings; it does not format the hard drive, delete users or restore the whole system to factory condition.
Fix common picture and sound problems
No picture
- Re-select the TV’s AV/composite input and reseat the AV MULTI connector.
- Verify yellow is in the composite video socket, not an unconfigured component socket.
- Run the second-beep reset.
- Try a known-good PS3 AV cable or another compatible display.
- Confirm that a modern TV actually supports composite; some require a manufacturer-specific adapter.
Black-and-white picture
Check for PAL/NTSC incompatibility, an incorrect input mode, a yellow plug connected to a component input, or an incorrectly wired cable or converter. A display may accept audio while rejecting the video format.
Audio but no video
Inspect the yellow plug and video input first. If the cable’s video conductor is damaged, the red and white audio channels can still work.
Video but no audio
Connect both red and white plugs, unmute the TV and confirm it is using the same input for audio. The PS3 may still direct sound to HDMI or optical from an earlier setup; review its audio-output settings and select the analog AV connection.

Only one channel or mono sound
White alone may produce mono or a single channel. If the display has one combined audio input, use the arrangement or adapter specified by that display or converter.
Stretched, cropped or unstable image
Composite is interlaced standard-definition video. Set the TV to 4:3 or original aspect where appropriate, and be aware that some flat panels deinterlace 480i/576i poorly. A converter can also mishandle interlaced signals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What picture quality to expect
Composite is a lower-bandwidth analog connection, not an upgrade over HDMI. Because luminance and color share one signal, menus, text and fine details usually look softer or noisier than through HDMI or component. Modern TVs may add softness or deinterlacing artifacts; a CRT often handles the signal more naturally. Results vary by display, cable and converter.
| Connection | Typical use | Picture characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Modern televisions | Digital audio/video and the simplest high-definition option |
| Component | Older HDTVs or analog setups | Usually clearer analog video than composite |
| Composite | CRT TVs, older equipment and fallback connections | Standard-definition, interlaced and softer |
If your TV has no composite input
A passive cable cannot turn analog video into HDMI. You need a powered analog-to-HDMI converter or scaler, and the converter’s audio inputs must also receive the red and white plugs. Basic adapters vary in image quality, interlacing handling, USB-power requirements and processing delay, so judge a specific model rather than assuming all are equivalent.

- Connect your PlayStation to a television with s-video or video connection and achieve better picture quality
- Replace the standard cable included with the PlayStation system
- Compatible with Playstation3, Playstation2 and PSX system
- Easy connections with the color-coded connectors
- Enjoy better gameplay with clear graphics and sharp pictures
For a TV that already accepts composite, a cable is all you need. For a digital-only TV, a dedicated scaler is an optional upgrade in convenience and processing—not a way to make composite-originated video equal to HDMI.
RetroTINK options
The RetroTINK-2X Pro accepts composite, S-Video and component and outputs digital video. Its listed price was $139.99 on August 16, 2026; prices can change. It suits users who need conversion for several retro consoles, but is unnecessary when the TV has working composite inputs.
The RetroTINK-5X Pro accepts composite, S-Video, component, RGB and SCART with more advanced scaling and deinterlacing. Its listed price was $325.00 on August 16, 2026. The manufacturer notes that yellow composite produces lower-quality results than higher-quality analog connections, so the scaler cannot remove the limitations of the source signal.
Final connection checklist
- PS3-compatible AV MULTI cable is fully inserted.
- Yellow goes to composite video; red and white go to matching audio inputs.
- TV or converter is on the correct AV input.
- PS3 video output is set to AV MULTI/SCART and Composite.
- Audio output is not still locked to HDMI or optical.
- The second-beep reset has been used if the screen remains blank.
