If the creator exported the pack from CurseForge, open the CurseForge desktop app, choose Minecraft → Import → Import Profile .zip, select the ZIP without extracting it, and wait for the profile to appear in My Modpacks. You can then select it and click Play. This works only with a CurseForge-compatible profile export containing the expected structure, including a top-level manifest.json—not with every ZIP that happens to contain Minecraft mods.
First identify what you received
CurseForge export
A creator may send a CurseForge-exported .zip or a temporary profile code. This is the simplest route because the export records the Minecraft version, modloader, mod files, and configuration information. Profile codes are valid for seven days. See CurseForge’s sharing instructions.
A pack built from scratch
If you received no archive or code, create a new profile and add compatible content through CurseForge’s Add More Content screen.
An arbitrary ZIP or mods folder
A compressed folder containing only .jar files, a world save, or datapacks is not automatically an importable profile. Ask the creator for a proper CurseForge export, or obtain exact manual-installation instructions. A complete pack may also require configuration files, resource packs, shaders, scripts, libraries, and precise dependency versions.

What you need before importing
- The CurseForge desktop app, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux from the official download page.
- Minecraft Java Edition access and a Microsoft/Minecraft account for authentication and launching.
- A trusted, valid exported ZIP or an unexpired profile code.
- Enough disk space for the game, loader, mods, libraries, configurations, and any included worlds or resources.
- The creator’s specified Minecraft version and modloader. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt are different loader families and are not interchangeable.
CurseForge normally creates a separate modding environment rather than using your vanilla .minecraft folder. Its documented default locations are:

Install a custom pack from a ZIP
- Download the archive from the creator’s trusted source. Leave it as a
.zip; do not extract it first. - Open CurseForge and select Minecraft.
- Click Import.
- Choose Import Profile .zip, then click Choose .zip file.
- Select the exported archive and allow CurseForge to create and install the profile.
- Open My Modpacks, select the new profile, and click Play.
CurseForge may download files while building the profile. Do not update or remove components before the first launch; reproduce the creator’s tested combination first. The documented ZIP workflow is described at CurseForge’s import and export guide.
Use a profile code instead
- Open Minecraft in CurseForge and click Import.
- Select the profile-code option.
- Enter the code and click Import.
- When the profile appears under My Modpacks, select it and click Play.
A code that is more than seven days old has expired. The creator must generate and send a new one.
If you only have a list or folder of mods
- Open Minecraft in CurseForge and click Create.
- Give the profile a name, choose the exact Minecraft version, and choose the modloader and its version.
- Open the profile under My Modpacks.
- Click Add More Content and install the required mods, resource packs, or maps.
- Click Play after all required dependencies are present.
Use CurseForge’s automatic compatibility choices unless you understand the advanced version controls. Selecting a different loader or Minecraft version can make otherwise correct mods unusable. See the custom-profile instructions.

Choose the correct loader and launcher
CurseForge lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla profiles. Vanilla has no modloader; a modded profile normally requires one. A Fabric mod generally cannot be substituted into a Forge profile, and a mod compiled for one Minecraft release may fail on another. Keep the loader version, mod versions, and dependencies specified by the creator.
CurseForge can launch through the Classic/Mojang launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, or its own launcher option. The default is the Classic/Mojang launcher. Choosing Use CurseForge launcher requires signing in with your Microsoft/Minecraft account; CurseForge does not bypass Minecraft ownership or authentication.
Decide whether external files are trustworthy
Private packs can include files hosted outside CurseForge’s normal moderation pipeline. If the app presents a warning, the choices mean:
- CurseForge Files Only: installs only files hosted on CurseForge and is the safer default.
- All Files: installs the complete pack, including flagged external files, after you accept the risk.
- Cancel: stops installation if you cannot verify the creator or unfamiliar files.
Do not select All Files automatically for archives from random download sites, unknown Discord users, or re-uploaded sources.

Fix an “Invalid file” error
CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance expects a correctly structured export. Check these points in order:
- The filename ends in
.zip, not a renamed folder or another archive type. - The archive contains
manifest.jsonat its top level. If every item is inside an extra outer folder, the export was repackaged incorrectly. - You selected a profile export, not a world, datapack, or collection of individual mods.
- The creator exported the pack again instead of asking you to repair the archive manually.
Then open the app menu and run Repair Installation, retry the import, and contact the creator or CurseForge support if a correctly structured export still fails.
Fix a profile that imports but will not launch
- Verify the required Minecraft version, loader family, and loader version against the creator’s instructions.
- Try the untouched imported profile before adding or updating anything.
- Run Repair Installation.
- Try the standard Mojang/Microsoft launcher instead of the CurseForge launcher, or reverse that choice.
- Remove optional additions and check the creator’s known-issues guidance.
- Do not update every mod at once; restore the specified versions first, then isolate any change.
Failures can come from incompatible mods, missing dependencies, corrupted files, launcher configuration, Java or operating-system differences, or an external file that was blocked. Keep the original profile intact while testing.
Avoid problematic installation paths
CurseForge troubleshooting warns against storing its installation on the Desktop, inside OneDrive, in the vanilla .minecraft directory, at a drive root such as C: or D:, or in paths containing non-English or special characters. Use the default location or a simple dedicated path such as C:CurseForge or D:CurseForge on Windows.

Should you use another launcher?

You do not need a paid subscription to import or play a pack. CurseForge presents Premium as an optional ad-removal and author-support service, not a requirement.
FAQ
Can I install a ZIP full of mods?
Not through the normal profile import unless it is a valid CurseForge export with the expected structure. Create a matching profile and add the mods manually, or request a proper export.
Do I need to extract the ZIP?
No. Select the original ZIP from Import → Import Profile .zip.
Can I use CurseForge with Fabric?
Yes. CurseForge lists Fabric profiles, but every mod and dependency must match the selected Minecraft and Fabric versions.

Why does my profile code not work?
Profile codes expire after seven days. Ask the creator for a newly generated code.
Does this work with Bedrock Edition?
This workflow is for Minecraft Java Edition profiles. Bedrock add-ons use a different installation system.
Can I add mods after importing?
Yes, but check compatibility and dependencies first, and keep a backup of the working profile.
