For most modern systems, connect the device’s HDMI OUT to the television’s HDMI IN, turn on both devices, and select that HDMI input with the TV remote. Use the TV’s compatible high-bandwidth port and the right settings for 4K, 120Hz, HDR, or VRR.
Quick setup checklist
- Console or computer with its power supply connected
- A working HDMI cable, normally the one included with the system
- An available HDMI input on the TV
- The TV set to the HDMI number you used
- Game Mode enabled if your TV provides it
- Enhanced, 4K120, VRR, or similar HDMI settings enabled when required
Connect a modern console with HDMI
- Turn off the console and TV if convenient.
- Insert one end of the cable into the console’s port labeled HDMI OUT.
- Insert the other end into a numbered TV port labeled HDMI IN.
- Connect the console’s power cable or adapter.
- Turn on the TV and console.
- Press Input, Source, or the equivalent button on the TV remote.
- Select the HDMI number used. The console startup screen should appear.
Connect directly to the TV while setting up or troubleshooting. A soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture card can limit the signal or prevent a handshake.
Sony’s general arrangement is HDMI OUT on the console to HDMI IN on the TV. For systems targeting 4K/120Hz, Sony recommends the included cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable: Sony setup guidance.
Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite
Standard Switch and Switch OLED
TV play requires the dock. Connect the dock’s AC adapter to its AC ADAPTER socket, connect an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI OUT to the TV, and insert the console into the dock. Select the matching TV input. The dock generally must be powered for video output.

Nintendo’s connection instructions are available at Nintendo Support. If the screen stays black, remove and reinsert the console, check the dock adapter, and test another HDMI port and cable.
Switch Lite
The Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode. A dock, ordinary cable, or adapter cannot turn it into a TV-output device; Nintendo documents this limitation on the same support page.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Connect the console’s HDMI OUT directly to a TV HDMI IN. For 4K, use the TV port identified for 4K. For PS5 4K/120Hz, start with the included cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and make sure the game, TV, port, firmware, and every intermediary device support the signal.
PS5 video settings
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Here you can review Resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR, and Video Transfer Rate. A PS5’s ability to output 4K/120Hz is a maximum capability, not a promise that every game renders at 120 frames per second.

For a detailed compatibility checklist, see Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide. If there is no picture or sound, Sony’s support sequence includes checking the TV channel, updating console and TV software, trying another HDMI cable and port, and removing other audio/video devices from the chain: PS5 troubleshooting.
Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles
Use HDMI OUT on the Xbox to HDMI IN on the TV. Series X|S systems support high-refresh-rate output, VRR, and ALLM, but a TV may offer 120Hz on only particular ports. Use the supplied cable where possible and connect directly to the TV when diagnosing a problem.
To inspect compatibility, open Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details. The screen reports which 4K, HDR, and refresh-rate features the current connection supports. Xbox explains this check at Xbox Wire.

PC with DisplayPort
Use a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable or adapter. Verify that it supports your intended resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, and audio. Passive adapters do not cover every conversion scenario; an active adapter may be required.
PC or laptop with USB-C
The USB-C port must support video, usually through DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is needed, and many USB-C ports carry data or charging only. Some gaming laptops route the external display through integrated graphics, which can affect refresh-rate or VRR support.
Older consoles without HDMI
Composite, component, SCART, and proprietary outputs require hardware matched to the specific console. An analog signal cannot generally be changed to HDMI by a passive cable alone. Use an active analog-to-HDMI converter or, for many retro systems, a dedicated retro upscaler. Compatibility can vary with the console’s video standard, refresh rate, copy-protection behavior, audio, and scaling.
Choose the right HDMI port
Do not assume every TV input has identical capabilities. Labels may include HDMI 1, 4K 120Hz, 8K, Enhanced format, VRR, Game, ARC, or eARC. A television may reserve 4K/120Hz or VRR for one or two ports.

ARC/eARC is primarily a route for returning audio from the TV to a soundbar or receiver. A console can often display video through that port, but the ARC label does not mean it is the best or highest-bandwidth gaming input. Check the TV manual and the labels beside each socket. Sony gives an example menu at Settings > Channels & Inputs > External inputs > HDMI signal format, while warning that names vary by model, region, and firmware: Sony HDMI signal-format guide.
Select an HDMI cable
A working cable does not improve image quality merely because it is expensive. For 1080p or 4K/60Hz, a functioning High Speed or Premium High Speed cable may be sufficient. For 4K/120Hz, 8K, high-bandwidth VRR, or other HDMI 2.1 features, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The console’s included cable is the safest starting point.
Certification, length, construction, and correct device support matter more than gold-plated connectors or “gaming” branding. Elgato lists its certified Ultra High Speed cable as supporting up to 48Gbps, 4K/120Hz, 8K, dynamic HDR, VRR, ALLM, and eARC, subject to every connected device’s capabilities: Elgato HDMI cable specifications.
Optimize the TV for gaming
- Game Mode: Reduces image processing and may lower input latency; it does not guarantee a particular latency figure.
- Enhanced HDMI format: Enables higher bandwidth on some TVs.
- HDR: Requires support and appropriate settings on the TV, console, and game.
- VRR: Requires compatible console, TV input, cable, settings, and sometimes intermediary equipment.
- ALLM: Automatically switches to a low-latency mode where supported.
- Resolution and refresh rate: The display, game, console, cable, and complete signal path must all support the selected combination.
Fix “No signal,” a black screen, or missing audio
| Symptom | Checks in order |
|---|---|
| No signal or black screen | Confirm the console is on; select the exact HDMI input; reseat both plugs; try another TV port; test a known-good cable; bypass switches, receivers, soundbars, and capture cards; power-cycle both devices; enable the TV’s compatible or Enhanced mode; temporarily select 1080p or 60Hz; update firmware; test the console on another display. |
| Picture works but 4K/120Hz does not | Use the TV’s designated high-bandwidth port; enable Enhanced or 4K120 mode; use the included or certified Ultra High Speed cable; remove HDMI 2.0-limited intermediary equipment; check console output settings; confirm the game supports 120Hz; update firmware. |
| Picture but no sound | Check TV mute and volume; choose the correct console audio output; select the TV/HDMI playback device on a PC; verify that the soundbar or receiver is on the correct ARC/eARC connection; choose an audio format compatible with the TV or audio system. |
| Flickering picture | Try a shorter or better-certified cable; disable VRR temporarily; bypass intermediary equipment; update firmware; check bandwidth settings. On PS5, try a lower Video Transfer Rate in Video Output settings, as Sony recommends in its 4K guide. |
Use a soundbar, receiver, switch, or capture card
For the most reliable high-performance video path, use console → TV directly, then TV eARC/ARC → soundbar or receiver. An intermediary that lacks the required bandwidth can remove 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, or ALLM.

If the TV has too few inputs, unplug an infrequently used device or use an HDMI switch. Verify that a switch passes the exact features you need; many inexpensive models stop at 4K/60Hz and do not pass 120Hz or VRR. An AV receiver can also consolidate sources, but it must support the console’s full signal.
A capture card is for recording or streaming, not ordinary TV connection. Elgato’s Game Capture 4K X lists HDMI 2.1, up to 4K144 passthrough, and VRR passthrough at a price signal of $249.99 on its official page: Game Capture 4K X. The PCIe Game Capture 4K Pro lists 8K60 passthrough and 4K60 capture; its page showed a $299.99 price signal, with another page state showing $269.99, so pricing is volatile: Game Capture 4K Pro. Neither is necessary just to play on a TV.
Long-distance connections
For a TV across the room, use a longer certified HDMI cable or an active optical HDMI cable for demanding signals. HDMI-over-Ethernet extenders can work when installed correctly. Wireless HDMI adds possible latency, compression, interference, range limits, and cost; it is not equivalent to a direct wired connection for competitive play. Remote-play or streaming solutions similarly trade image quality and responsiveness for convenience.
