Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMany Nintendo Switch games can be played offline, but a downloaded game may refuse to start if the console needs to verify its license. The usual fix is to connect briefly, use the Nintendo Account that bought the game, and load its virtual game card onto the console. Physical games are often simpler, but Switch 2 game-key cards need an internet download before first play.
First check: is the game digital or physical?
Digital download
A digital purchase belongs to the Nintendo Account that bought it; having the game installed on the console or microSD card does not by itself grant every user offline access. Check which profile purchased it, whether its virtual game card is loaded on this console, and whether the console is using an online license. Nintendo says an online license requires an internet connection to verify the purchase, while a loaded virtual game card allows offline play. Nintendo’s offline-launch guidance
Physical game
A standard game card is generally the offline-friendly option, but physical packaging does not guarantee that all game data is on the card. On Switch 2, a Nintendo Switch 2 game card starts from the card, while a game-key card requires the software to be downloaded over the internet first. Compatible Nintendo Switch game cards can run as Switch software on Switch 2, subject to compatibility and each game’s requirements. Nintendo’s guide to Switch 2 physical software
How to fix a digital game that will not start offline
If the console is set to use an online license, it must connect to verify access. To prepare for offline play, connect temporarily and load the game’s virtual game card. Nintendo’s current setting path is HOME Menu user icon > User Settings > Online License Settings; review whether Use Online Licenses is enabled. Nintendo describes that setting as allowing software or DLC to be used while connected without loading its virtual game card. Nintendo’s online-license setting instructions

- Connect the console to the internet and confirm the Nintendo Account that purchased the game is available on it.
- From the HOME Menu, open the Virtual Game Card area and load the purchased game’s card onto this console. Nintendo’s virtual game card guide explains how cards manage digital purchases across supported systems.
- Open the game once while online so the purchase and installed software can be checked.
- Close the game, disconnect Wi-Fi or enable Airplane Mode, then launch it again from the same user profile. Test a local or single-player mode rather than an online feature.
If you move between systems, virtual game card placement matters: Nintendo’s 2025 announcement says a card can be loaded on up to two systems for one Nintendo Account, with local authentication required when using a second system for the first time. Nintendo’s announcement

Older support guidance uses the terms primary console and non-primary console: under that arrangement, downloaded games on a non-primary console needed an active internet connection during play. Nintendo’s Switch FAQ still describes that behavior. Current systems may instead present virtual game cards and online-license settings, so old instructions to change a “primary Switch” may not match the menus on your system. Labels and behavior depend on console family and software version.
Digital games are not freely transferable between unrelated Nintendo Accounts. Nintendo’s family-group lending feature has its own conditions and lending period; it is not a promise that two people can use the same copy offline at once. Nintendo’s virtual game card lending information

When the game itself needs internet
License verification is different from an actual online requirement. Installing or authorizing a game does not make server-dependent play available offline.
- Online multiplayer: needs an internet connection; many games also require Nintendo Switch Online.
- Cloud or streaming editions: run through a server and need a connection to play.
- Nintendo Switch Online classic-game applications: some, including certain NES and Super NES software, connect to verify an active membership. Nintendo explains this verification requirement
- Online services, events, or server authentication: a particular game or mode may require a connection even when other parts work offline.
Nintendo Switch Online is not generally required just to launch an ordinary offline single-player game. It is relevant to supported online multiplayer and membership features such as classic-game applications; buying a membership will not fix a separate digital-license problem.

Internet access and Nintendo Switch Online are different
| What you need | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | Downloads, updates, online-license checks, and network features | A downloaded game on an additional console may need a connection for license verification. |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership | Supported online multiplayer, classic-game libraries, and cloud saves for supported games | A game may need internet for multiplayer and a membership as well; offline single-player may need neither. |
Local save data is separate from cloud saves. You can generally continue using saves stored on the console offline, but synchronizing between systems or downloading a cloud backup requires an internet connection and, for supported Save Data Cloud features, Nintendo Switch Online. | What you have or see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Downloaded game on the usual console | Online-license check or virtual game card not loaded | Connect, use the purchasing account, and load the card. |
| Downloaded game on another household console | Account authorization or additional-console licensing | Use the purchaser’s account and check card placement; connect online if the console is using an online license. |
| Game bought by a different profile | The current user may not have offline rights | Try the purchasing profile or follow Nintendo’s sharing rules. |
| Standard game card | Card recognition, compatibility, update, or title-specific requirement | Reinsert the card and check the game’s requirements. |
| Switch 2 game-key card | Game data has not been downloaded | Connect to the internet for the initial download; keep the card inserted to play. |
| Nintendo Switch Online classic title | Membership verification | Connect so the app can verify the membership. |
| Cloud game or online mode | The feature depends on a server | Use an internet connection; offline play may not be supported. |
If it still will not launch
- Check the download: A title can appear on the HOME Menu before required software data is complete. Resume a paused download and check available system or microSD storage.
- Check the card type: A Switch 2 game-key card needs its first internet download, and the card must remain inserted afterward. A standard card may still need an update or separate game data.
- Check account and content: Confirm the game is on the expected Nintendo Account and that any DLC you need is installed and licensed.
- Separate launch from features: A game may start offline while a newer patch, DLC, online event, or particular mode remains unavailable. Whether an update is required to launch varies by title and situation.
- For a physical card: Reinsert it in the correct orientation, try another physical game if available, and check whether the title is compatible with your system.
- For cloud saves: Do not confuse a missing cloud sync with a missing local save; cloud transfer requires a connection, while locally stored data is separate.
If the game launches online but not after these checks, note the exact error message and whether it appears for every profile or only one. Those details distinguish a license or account issue from a game-specific online requirement.
