No. In normal retail use, PS Vita handhelds connect to compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not a 5 GHz-only network. A modern dual-band router can still work: make sure its 2.4 GHz band is enabled, then connect the Vita to that network. Sony lists the Vita’s wireless interface as IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 1×1, but its published specification does not explicitly state “2.4 GHz only.”
Does the PS Vita support 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Treat the retail PS Vita as a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi device. Sony’s product outline specifies IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 1×1, and does not list 802.11a or newer 5 GHz-oriented standards. The 802.11n standard can be implemented on more than one frequency band, so the letters “b/g/n” alone do not prove a device supports 5 GHz; the Vita’s practical compatibility is with 2.4 GHz networks. Sony’s PS Vita product outline gives the wireless specification.
Changing the network name, updating system software, or changing security settings cannot add a different radio band to the handheld. If a router is configured for 5 GHz only, the Vita will not join it directly.
Which PS Vita models are affected?
The practical 2.4 GHz limitation applies to the major retail handheld families:

Differences such as screen, weight, battery, internal storage, or cellular capability do not give these handhelds 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Sony describes Wi-Fi as available on all Vita models and mobile-network access as an additional capability of 3G/Wi-Fi models in its internet connection guide. “5 GHz Wi-Fi” is unrelated to “5G” cellular service: a 3G Vita’s cellular modem is not a 5 GHz Wi-Fi radio.
How to connect a Vita to a modern router
Set up a compatible 2.4 GHz network
For troubleshooting, use a distinct 2.4 GHz SSID so it is clear which band the Vita is joining. A useful compatibility starting point is:
- Enable the router’s 2.4 GHz radio and broadcast its SSID.
- Temporarily give 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz different names, such as Home-2.4 and Home-5.
- Use a mixed legacy-compatible 802.11b/g/n mode instead of an 802.11ax-only or n-only mode if the Vita cannot connect.
- Use WPA2-Personal (WPA2-PSK/AES) where available; avoid WPA3-only mode while diagnosing an older device.
- Try channel 1, 6, or 11 if manual channel selection is available.
Sony’s Vita guide explains access-point selection and key entry, and recommends WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK as stronger security methods. Its guidance predates many current router options; WPA3, Wi-Fi 6-only modes, band steering, and mesh behavior are compatibility troubleshooting considerations, not Sony-certified requirements. If a mixed WPA2/WPA3 setup still fails, try a separate WPA2-compatible guest or IoT network. Avoid captive-portal networks that require a browser sign-in, since the Vita’s older browser may not handle the login reliably.

Join the network on the Vita
- Open Settings and select Start.
- Select Network, then Wi-Fi Settings.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and wait for nearby access points to appear.
- Select the router’s 2.4 GHz SSID and enter its wireless password.
- Run the connection test if prompted, or select the saved access point to test it.
Sony documents this path and notes that saved access points can be tested and used for automatic reconnection in its Wi-Fi settings guide.
Can a dual-band or mesh router work?
Yes, provided the router or mesh system offers a compatible 2.4 GHz connection. A dual-band router is not inherently incompatible just because it also broadcasts 5 GHz.
| Router setup | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs; compatible 2.4 GHz settings | The Vita can join the 2.4 GHz SSID. |
| One combined SSID with both bands active | It may work, but band steering can make discovery or connection less predictable. Split the SSIDs temporarily to troubleshoot. |
| 5 GHz-only operation | The Vita cannot connect directly. |
| 2.4 GHz set to WPA3-only, Wi-Fi 6-only, or another restrictive legacy-incompatible mode | The Vita may fail to find or join the network; try a mixed legacy mode and WPA2-compatible network. |
| Mesh system with band steering or uneven 2.4 GHz coverage | Connection may be unreliable during setup; test near a node or use a separate compatible access point. |
A separate 2.4 GHz guest or IoT SSID can isolate older devices from a main network, if the router supports it. For a temporary workaround, a 2.4 GHz phone hotspot, travel router, or spare router configured as an access point can bridge the gap: the upstream connection may be modern, but the access point must present a network the Vita can use. That does not make the Vita 5 GHz-compatible.

What to do if the Wi-Fi network does not appear
Work through these checks in order; a missing SSID is not by itself proof that the Vita’s Wi-Fi hardware is faulty.
- Confirm the router’s 2.4 GHz radio is enabled. A 5 GHz-only network will not appear as a usable option.
- Temporarily split the bands into separate SSIDs and confirm the 2.4 GHz SSID is being broadcast, not hidden.
- Move the Vita close to the router or mesh node, then restart both devices.
- Set 2.4 GHz to a mixed legacy-compatible mode and use WPA2-Personal for the test.
- If the router allows manual channel selection, try channel 1, 6, or 11.
- On the Vita, remove the saved access point and add it again to eliminate an outdated password or saved configuration.
- Try a known-compatible 2.4 GHz phone hotspot, configured to 2.4 GHz if the phone offers that choice.
If the Vita sees the network but fails after selection, check the password and router security first. A successful Wi-Fi connection also does not guarantee that PSN, a particular service, or internet authentication will work; those can fail for reasons unrelated to the radio band.

No. A software update cannot change the frequency bands supported by the handheld’s Wi-Fi hardware. As of August 18, 2026, Sony’s U.S. support page lists system software version 3.74 as the latest Vita release, dated May 10, 2022. The Wi-Fi update route is Settings > Start > System Update > Update Using Wi-Fi, which requires a compatible 2.4 GHz access point. Sony also lists updating through a PS3, a computer using Content Manager Assistant, or a PS Vita card. See Sony’s PS Vita system software support page.

Is the problem the router or the Vita?
A phone hotspot is a useful diagnostic, not a definitive hardware test:
- Set a phone hotspot to 2.4 GHz, if that option is available, and temporarily use a simple network name and password.
- Place the Vita near the phone and try to connect.
- If the Vita connects to the hotspot, focus on the home router’s band, security, broadcast, or steering settings.
- If the Vita cannot see or join multiple known-good 2.4 GHz networks, a Vita software or hardware problem becomes more likely.
If no nearby 2.4 GHz networks appear after router settings, range, and saved-network issues have been ruled out, investigate the handheld’s Wi-Fi hardware or software rather than continuing to change the 5 GHz settings.
