A pink or purple PS5 picture is usually a problem somewhere in the HDMI signal path—not a special PS5 error. A loose or marginal cable, a display input, an HDR or high-refresh-rate compatibility issue, or an HDMI receiver or switch can all disrupt the picture. Start by connecting the PS5 directly to the display and testing one change at a time; save resets and repair decisions for after those checks.
Identify what is turning pink
Note where and when the color changes. A steady pink cast, colored static, a fixed patch, and a brief flash during startup can point to different parts of the setup. These are clues, not definitive diagnoses.
- The whole PS5 picture is tinted: Check the cable, input, and video-output format.
- Pink appears with green artifacts, lines, sparkles, or snow: Signal integrity or a port problem becomes more plausible.
- It happens only when HDR starts or a game launches: The display chain may be struggling with the signal mode being negotiated.
- It happens after waking from Rest Mode: A failed HDMI handshake is one possibility; this pattern alone does not establish a universal PS5 defect.
- Only one game is affected: Check that game’s HDR, brightness, and color settings, and install available game and system updates before suspecting console hardware.
- The TV’s own menus are pink too: Investigate the display rather than assuming the PS5 is responsible. Sony recommends checking whether abnormal colors also appear on the TV menu. Sony TV guidance for odd colors.
Use this comparison to narrow the fault:
| Test result | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| The TV or monitor menu and other sources are pink | Display settings, panel, or input circuitry |
| Only the PS5 input is pink | HDMI path, PS5 output settings, or that display input |
| The PS5 is pink on multiple displays | PS5 output settings, cable, or console HDMI hardware |
| The problem stays with one display when sources are swapped | That display or its input configuration |
| The picture is normal except in one game | Game-specific settings or software behavior |
Reset the HDMI connection first
A fresh connection can clear a handshake problem without changing console settings. Sony’s HDMI troubleshooting also recommends a power reset and checking the connection. Sony HDMI troubleshooting.
- Shut down the PS5 completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode. Turn off the TV or monitor.
- Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and disconnect both devices from power.
- Wait about 15 seconds, then reconnect the PS5 directly to the display.
- Use the PS5’s included cable if it is available and undamaged, or a known-good cable rated for the output you use.
- Turn on the display, select the correct HDMI input, and then start the PS5.
If the problem started after waking from Rest Mode, compare this cold-start result with the wake-up behavior. If only the wake-up path produces pink video, update both devices and test without HDR, VRR, 120Hz output, or intermediary HDMI equipment before treating it as a hardware fault.

Test the cable, ports, and HDMI chain
Swap the cable and display input
Check that both HDMI plugs are fully seated and that neither end or port is visibly damaged. Try another cable and another HDMI input on the display. If you need 4K/120Hz, Sony recommends the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable capable of that output; a marginal cable may work at 1080p or 60Hz but fail at higher bandwidth. Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide.
Some TVs reserve their higher-bandwidth modes for particular inputs or require an input setting such as Enhanced format, Deep Color, Input Signal Plus, or HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color. Names and availability vary by brand, model, and firmware, so use the display’s manual to find the compatible mode for the port in use. A different port may work even when the first does not. Sony HDMI troubleshooting.
Do not assume every PS5 setup requires HDMI 2.1: the relevant requirement depends on the resolution and refresh rate you want. For 4K/120Hz, use a compatible high-bandwidth connection; for lower modes, an older compatible connection may suffice. Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide.

Bypass receivers, soundbars, and other devices
Temporarily remove any AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, extender, or capture card from the path. Connect the PS5 straight to the TV or monitor and test the same game and video mode. If that fixes the picture, reconnect the devices one at a time to identify which link or setting causes trouble. Each device adds another point where bandwidth, HDCP, or format negotiation can fail. Sony recommends a direct connection and removing other audio/video equipment during troubleshooting. Sony PS5 troubleshooting.
Reduce video-output demands to find a trigger
If the PS5 menu is usable, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Change one setting at a time and retest the condition that caused the pink picture. Options shown can depend on the connected display and PS5 model.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or temporarily to 1080p.
- Turn 120 Hz Output off.
- Turn VRR off.
- Set HDR to Off temporarily.
- Try Video Transfer Rate at -1, then -2 if needed.
- If you use 1440p, run Test 1440p Output only as a diagnostic; Sony notes that this test can produce unexpected behavior in some cases.
Sony documents these output controls and recommends reducing Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 when video flickers; it also advises turning off 120Hz when a game has video-output problems in that mode. Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide. Although a pink picture is not the same symptom as flicker, lowering output demands is a useful way to test whether the connection is marginal.

If disabling HDR restores normal color, that points toward a problem negotiating or carrying the HDR signal; it does not prove HDR itself is defective. Update the display, try another cable and input, then enable HDR again. HDR Off also removes HDR output, so treat it as a test rather than a default permanent fix. Re-enable HDR, VRR, 120Hz, and other desired features individually so you can identify which change brings the problem back.
Use Safe Mode if the picture prevents navigation
Safe Mode provides video-output recovery options when the regular PS5 display is unusable. To enter it, follow Sony’s procedure: PlayStation Safe Mode instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for about three seconds. Wait until the power indicator stops flashing.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Change Video Output > Change Resolution and try a mode the display supports. If an HDCP compatibility problem is suspected, try Change Video Output > Change HDCP Mode as a diagnostic.
- Select Restart PS5 to leave Safe Mode and check the picture.
Changing HDCP mode is not a universal fix and can affect protected video playback or devices in the HDMI chain. Safe Mode can help change the output; it cannot repair a damaged cable or port. If the picture remains unreadable there, repeat the hardware isolation tests rather than cycling through resets.

Restore settings without erasing games or saves
If the problem began after changing console settings and the display is usable, try Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings. Sony says this restores console settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data. Sony’s Restore Default Settings guidance.
Do not confuse that option with Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): those options delete user data. They are not routine first steps for a pink screen. If needed for a serious software problem, back up data first and follow Sony’s instructions. Sony PS5 troubleshooting and Safe Mode options.
Update the devices in the signal path
Install available PS5 system software and TV or monitor firmware updates; update receiver, soundbar, or capture-device firmware if one is part of the setup. Sony provides the standard PS5 system software update procedure and instructions for updating through Safe Mode if the console cannot reach its home screen. Firmware updates are sensible compatibility checks, not a guarantee that an update will fix a pink picture.

Decide whether the display or PS5 needs service
Swap sources and displays rather than guessing. Try another HDMI device on the same display input, and try the PS5 with a known-good cable on another TV or monitor. Also check whether the display’s menus, built-in apps, and other inputs show abnormal colors. Sony recommends display self-diagnostics, a restart or reset, and service if odd colors persist on the TV menu. Sony TV odd-color guidance.
A PS5 HDMI-port problem becomes more likely if the plug feels loose, the picture changes when the cable moves, or the port looks bent, cracked, pushed inward, or has missing contacts—especially when the fault persists across known-good cables, multiple display inputs, and more than one display. Do not bend contacts, scrape the port, spray liquid into it, or force the plug. If the TV works normally with other devices and the fault follows the PS5, use PlayStation Repairs for diagnosis rather than replacing the console on the basis of an unisolated symptom. Repair availability and cost depend on region, model, and warranty status.
