You can then add the account to a US or other-region PS5 or PS4. The country/region and date of birth are permanent, and Sony requires account information to be accurate under its terms. Payment is usually the difficult part: a foreign card may be rejected, so plan for a Japan-compatible wallet code or another payment method accepted by the Japanese Store.
What a Japanese PSN account does
A Japan-region PSN account is a second account that opens the Japanese PlayStation Store. It does not convert your existing US account or change your console’s system language.

- Your original account keeps its own trophies, friends, subscriptions, saves, purchases and wallet balance.
- Both accounts can exist on the same PS5 or PS4; switch users before opening the Store or launching content owned by the other account.
- A Japanese account does not automatically add Japanese voices or subtitles to a game.
- Game, disc and DLC compatibility is title-specific. Japanese DLC may not work with a US disc or US digital edition.
Common legitimate reasons include viewing Japanese listings and age ratings, downloading Japan-exclusive demos or applications, buying a Japanese digital release, or accessing a service that requires a Japan-region account.
Before you start
- An accessible email address not already used for another PSN sign-in. Sony says signup can fail when the address is already in use: official account-creation guide.
- Your real date of birth. Sony says it cannot be changed later.
- A unique password, a proposed Online ID and an adult or child-account decision.
- Internet access and a PS5, PS4 or web browser.
- A payment plan if you intend to buy Japanese-Store content.
Sony’s current terms require the country/region and other registration information to be accurate, and the country/region cannot later be changed. Sony’s Japanese terms say Japan residents should select Japan and warn that support may not be available when registration does not match actual residence. Do not use a fabricated address or identity as an assumed workaround. Review the March 2026 PlayStation Terms of Service and Japanese PlayStation terms.

Create the account in a browser
- Open PlayStation Account Management.
- Select Create New Account.
- Enter the requested personal details and preferences.
- At country/region, select Japan only when that selection is consistent with your circumstances and Sony’s terms.
- Choose a language, enter the separate email address, and create a secure password.
- Choose an Online ID and provide the requested name information.
- Finish each screen, then open Sony’s verification email and follow its instructions.
- On your console, add the new user and sign in with the verified account.
Menu wording can change with system software, so the browser route is a useful fallback when console labels differ.
Create one on PS5
- From the home screen, select your profile picture.
- Select Switch User.
- Select Add User, then Get Started.
- On the sign-in screen, select Create an Account.
- Enter the requested details, select the applicable country/region, and complete email verification.
The account region comes from the signup selection, not simply from whether the physical console was sold in Japan. Disc compatibility, DLC, payment and service availability can still vary by region.

Create one on PS4
- Press and hold the PS button to open the quick menu.
- Select Power, then Switch User.
- Select New User, then Create a User.
- Follow the prompts, enter the requested information and complete email verification.
Sign in and use the Japanese Store
Switch to the Japanese user, open PlayStation Store and confirm that the storefront and prices are Japanese. Your existing account remains unchanged. A purchase belongs to the account that completed the transaction; it is not transferred to your main account. Console-sharing or primary-console settings may allow some games to be played by other users, but entitlement, online-service and title restrictions still apply. Sony notes that content availability varies by country, language, device and service in its Terms of Service.
How to pay for Japanese PSN purchases
Why a US card may fail
Sony warns that a card registered to an address in a different country from the Store region may not link. Its terms also allow residence checks through card or debit information. A foreign card may therefore be rejected; entering a Japanese address does not make the card’s billing information valid. If you try a card, enter the billing details exactly as shown by the issuer and use a payment method accepted for the relevant Store.

Wallet top-up codes
A Japanese PlayStation Store wallet code is often the practical alternative when direct card payment fails. Sign in to the Japanese account, open PlayStation Store, choose the redeem-code option, enter the voucher, confirm the wallet balance and purchase from the Japanese Store. The code must match the account’s Store region; a US voucher should not be represented as valid for a Japanese account. Sony lists Store cards and tickets among Japanese wallet-funding methods in its Japanese terms.
PayPal
Sony lists Japan as a supported PlayStation Store PayPal region, but linking is not guaranteed for every foreign PayPal setup. One PayPal account can be linked to only one PlayStation account. See Sony’s PayPal payment guide.

Payment retry lockout
If Sony reports that payment details were “updated too often,” stop retrying and wait 24 hours. Trying again during that period can restart the block. For other failures, consult Sony’s credit and debit card troubleshooting.

No. Sony’s account-creation instructions do not list a VPN as a requirement. A VPN does not fix a country mismatch, rejected card, incompatible DLC, address verification or limitations on account support. The account’s selected country/region controls the Store.

Important account and content limits
Region and purchases are permanent to the account
You cannot change the country/region after creation. Create a new account if you need a different region; do not try to edit the existing account. Wallet funds and purchases remain separated between accounts.
DLC and editions must match
Before buying an add-on, check whether the base game is a physical disc or digital product, identify its product region and edition, and confirm the DLC’s Store region. Compatibility is title-specific, so check the publisher’s documentation when uncertain.
Adult and child accounts
Sony requires an adult accepting the agreement to be at least 18 and the legal age of majority in the registered country. A parent or legal guardian must create or authorize a child account where applicable. In Japan, Sony says an under-18 account cannot have its own wallet; purchases may use the family manager’s wallet subject to a monthly spending limit: Japanese terms.
Security and recovery
- Use a unique password and never share it.
- Keep permanent access to the email inbox used for verification and recovery.
- Enable the strongest available sign-in security options and store recovery information safely.
- Turn on purchase-password protection where available.
Sony may restrict an account it believes has been compromised, and its terms require users to protect sign-in credentials: Terms of Service.
Japanese PSN signup and payment problems
