Yes, Fortnite can run on a PC with 8GB of system RAM, but 8GB is Epic’s minimum—not its recommended amount. Epic currently recommends 16GB or more. With 8GB, low settings and few background apps give you the best chance of playable performance, but smoothness also depends on your processor, graphics hardware, storage, and memory configuration. Epic’s PC requirements were checked August 18, 2026.
What Fortnite’s PC requirements say about 8GB RAM
Epic lists 8GB of RAM for the minimum configuration and 16GB or more for both the recommended and Epic-quality configurations. Meeting the memory minimum means your PC may be able to run the game; it does not mean the rest of the PC can deliver high frame rates or consistent frame times.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended | Epic quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| System RAM | 8GB | 16GB or higher | 16GB or higher |
| CPU | Intel Core i3-3225 3.3GHz | Core i5-7300U 3.5GHz, Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent | Core i7-8700, Ryzen 7 3700X, or equivalent |
| GPU | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 | GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DX11 GPU | RTX 3070, RX 6700 XT, or equivalent |
| VRAM | Not separately specified by Epic | 2GB | 8GB or higher |
| Storage | Not separately specified by Epic | NVMe SSD | NVMe SSD |
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit; Epic’s listing specifies Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 | Windows 10/11 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
These are Epic’s current listed PC requirements; supported Windows versions and requirements can change. Check Epic’s Fortnite PC requirements before relying on a particular OS version. The 8GB figure refers to system RAM, not graphics-card VRAM. A dedicated GPU has its own VRAM; integrated graphics share system memory, leaving less available for Windows and the game.
What “smooth” play can mean on an 8GB PC
There is no reliable FPS promise based on RAM alone. A useful distinction is whether Fortnite launches, whether its frame delivery feels consistent, and whether the PC can sustain high-refresh competitive play. Those depend on the GPU and CPU, resolution, game version, cooling, rendering mode, storage, and background activity as well as memory.

- Speeds up to 3200 MT/s / Timing 16-18-18-38 / Voltage 1.35V / Unbuffered / 8GB based
- Backed by a lifetime warranty to promise complete services and technical support.
- Advertised speeds are reached via XMP or the equivalent profile (such as DOCP or A-XMP) in your BIOS profiles. Actual performance varies by system configuration (Motherboard/CPU compatibility). Plug-and-play speeds follow JEDEC standards.
- Playable: The game launches and responds acceptably, often with low settings and modest expectations.
- Casual smoothness: Frame delivery is reasonably consistent, even if the FPS is not high. An 8GB PC may achieve this if its other components are capable and other memory use is limited.
- Competitive or high-quality play: Stable frame times and high-refresh output put more pressure on the complete system. Epic’s recommended and Epic-quality configurations both call for at least 16GB, with substantially stronger CPUs and GPUs for Epic quality.
Windows and background apps use part of the installed 8GB, so Fortnite cannot claim all of it. When memory is under pressure, Windows may page data to storage, which can contribute to hitches. But low average FPS or stutter can also come from a weak GPU or CPU, heat, drivers, or a slow drive. More RAM can help when memory is the constraint; it does not automatically raise average FPS if another component is holding performance back.
Why two 8GB computers can feel different
- Graphics: An integrated GPU shares system memory; a dedicated GPU uses separate VRAM and generally places less demand on system RAM. Epic lists integrated graphics as minimum examples, not as modern performance recommendations.
- Memory layout: On systems that support dual-channel memory, two compatible modules can provide more bandwidth than one module. A single 8GB stick may therefore affect integrated-graphics performance as well as capacity.
- Storage: An SSD can improve loading and reduce some storage-related hitching compared with a hard drive, but it cannot make an inadequate CPU or GPU powerful. Epic recommends an NVMe SSD in its recommended and Epic-quality configurations.
- Cooling and power: A laptop that overheats or is restricted by a power-saving mode may slow down regardless of its RAM capacity.
Epic says a dedicated GPU is not mandatory, while noting one can make the experience smoother. Its low-FPS guidance also discusses SSDs and memory for older systems. Its hardware examples are specific to those systems and should not be treated as FPS guarantees for every current Fortnite build.
Best Fortnite settings to try with 8GB
Start by reducing graphics load and memory pressure. Epic recommends the Low preset and 100% 3D Resolution as a baseline; Performance rendering mode is another option for less powerful hardware. Menu wording can vary by game version.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
- Open Fortnite and open the main menu.
- Select Settings, then go to the Video tab.

- Set 3D Resolution to 100% to start. If performance remains inadequate, lower it; the image will become softer.
- Set Rendering Mode to Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, where available.
- Select Apply and restart Fortnite if prompted.
Performance mode trades visual fidelity for a lighter rendering workload. Neither it nor Low settings can overcome a severely underpowered processor or graphics chip, and neither guarantees a particular frame rate.
If DirectX 12 causes a freeze or black screen
Try the in-game Performance rendering option first. For problems specifically associated with DirectX 12, Epic documents a launcher argument workaround; it is not the normal first step for every 8GB PC:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Settings.
- Expand the Fortnite section and enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
- Enter
-d3d12 -es31, then launch Fortnite to test.

Reduce Windows memory pressure before upgrading
Close applications you do not need while playing, especially browsers with many tabs, video editors, extra game launchers, cloud-sync apps, recording or streaming tools, overlays, RGB utilities, and large downloads. Do not turn off essential security protection as a performance shortcut.
On a laptop with both integrated and dedicated graphics, check that Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance GPU in Windows graphics settings or the GPU maker’s control panel. Update the graphics driver, use a suitable power mode while plugged in, and keep vents clear. If performance degrades after playing for a while, check cooling and airflow; Epic also recommends clearing dust and using the computer in a well-ventilated area.

Choose the next step based on the symptom
| What you see | What to try |
|---|---|
| Stutters during play | Close background apps, restart Fortnite and Windows, use Low settings and Performance mode, update graphics drivers, and check temperatures. If storage is a hard drive, consider an SSD. If memory use stays near its limit, consider a compatible upgrade to 16GB. |
| Low FPS without much stuttering | Check GPU and CPU capability, resolution, rendering mode, and laptop power settings. If the GPU is the main limit, extra RAM may make little difference to average FPS. |
| Crashes, freezing, or black screens | Update drivers, test Performance mode, verify game files, and check cooling. If the problem occurs specifically with DirectX 12, try Epic’s documented launcher argument procedure above. |
| Settings reset on every launch | This is a configuration-file permission issue, not evidence that the PC needs more RAM. Use the recovery steps below. |
| Performance worsens after extended play | Check for overheating: keep vents unobstructed, clear dust, and use the PC in a well-ventilated space. |

When upgrading from 8GB to 16GB makes sense
A move to 16GB is most worthwhile when memory use is regularly near its limit, Fortnite hitches while other applications are open, or you want more room for current Windows and game workloads. Epic’s recommended configuration starts at 16GB. More RAM may improve frame-time consistency and reduce memory-related hitching, but it may not materially raise average FPS if the graphics card or processor is the bottleneck.

Before buying, check the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s specifications and confirm the memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity, available slots, and whether memory is soldered. Laptops typically use SODIMMs when memory is replaceable; desktops typically use DIMMs. A matched configuration can enable dual-channel operation on supported systems, but compatibility depends on the device. Do not assume that any 2×8GB kit will fit or work at its advertised speed.
If the PC uses a hard drive, an SSD can help with loading and some storage-related hitches, but it is not a replacement for adequate graphics performance. If the GPU is far below what you need, the CPU is old, or laptop RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded, spending on memory alone may not solve the problem. Cloud streaming through a supported service such as GeForce NOW is another option for weak local hardware, but it relies on a suitable internet connection and brings network latency; it is not equivalent to local play.
Verdict: 8GB is enough to try Fortnite, 16GB is the safer target
An 8GB PC can run Fortnite, particularly with low settings, Performance mode, and minimal background activity. Treat it as a minimum configuration, not a promise of smooth play. For fewer memory constraints and a better chance of consistent performance, 16GB is the preferred target—but first make sure the CPU, GPU, storage, and upgrade compatibility also make sense.
