Yes, RTSS is generally safe for most users when downloaded from its official Guru3D distribution page or installed through an official MSI Afterburner package. The main security risk is a fake or modified installer; the main day-to-day caveat is compatibility. RTSS interacts with games to display monitoring data and limit frame rates, so an overlay can be blocked or cause problems in a particular game. Verify the download, avoid unofficial mirrors, and close RTSS if a game objects or behaves abnormally.
What RivaTuner Statistics Server does
RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) is a Windows utility for displaying performance information over a game, limiting frame rates, and configuring per-application overlay behavior. It can present FPS, frametime, and hardware metrics supplied by monitoring software. Its Scanline Sync feature is intended to reduce visible tearing in some configurations.
RTSS is often installed alongside MSI Afterburner, but they are separate programs with different roles. RTSS provides overlay and frame-limiting functions; Afterburner is the monitoring and GPU-tuning interface. RTSS does not itself overclock a GPU or set its voltage. MSI says both programs need to run in the background for Afterburner’s in-game monitoring display to work. MSI’s Afterburner support guide explains the monitoring setup.
Guru3D identifies Unwinder with RTSS and hosts its distribution. Its official page currently lists RTSS 7.3.7 Final for Windows 64-bit as freeware; that listing is a snapshot of the page and does not establish what beta or bundled builds may be available elsewhere. Check the current official RTSS listing before downloading.

Where to download RTSS safely
Use the official Guru3D RTSS download page, or obtain it as an installation component through the official MSI Afterburner page. Guru3D and MSI both warn about spoof or fake download sites. A familiar logo or a search result labeled “official” is not enough: check the browser’s actual domain.
- Avoid unrelated download mirrors, driver aggregators, cracked-software sites, forum attachments, and links in unsolicited messages or video descriptions.
- Do not choose a repackaged installer that promises unlocked features, a portable version, or fewer security warnings.
- During an Afterburner installation, review the component selection and install RTSS only if you need its overlay or frame limiter.
MSI’s release page distinguishes the Afterburner 4.6.6 Final release from 4.6.7 Beta; Guru3D also lists beta builds. Treat a beta as a beta, not as a stable release, and use the final RTSS build for general use unless a specific compatibility need calls for something else. Guru3D’s beta listing and MSI’s page show their respective release labels.
How to check an installer and understand Windows warnings
A warning is a reason to pause and identify what Windows is reporting, not a reason to switch off protection. SmartScreen considers publisher and file reputation, among other factors; an uncommon or unrecognized file can prompt a warning without that warning alone proving malware. Microsoft explains SmartScreen reputation, and its SmartScreen FAQ clarifies that a reputation warning is not automatically a malware verdict.

- “Not commonly downloaded” or “unrecognized app”: Stop and verify the source. This can be a reputation warning, but it is not a reason to proceed blindly.
- Potentially unwanted application (PUA/PUP): This may refer to unwanted or unexpected behavior or packaging; it is distinct from a confirmed malware detection. Read the detection details and do not dismiss it without checking the file.
- A named malware threat: Treat it seriously. Do not run the installer or create an antivirus exclusion while you investigate.
- Invalid or unavailable signature: Do not assume that a file is authentic. Confirm the source and obtain a clean copy before continuing.
Microsoft describes the distinction between malware and potentially unwanted software in its unwanted-software guidance. A clean scan or valid signature is useful evidence, not a guarantee that a file is harmless in every respect.

- Confirm the address bar shows guru3d.com or msi.com before downloading; do not rely on page branding alone.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and choose Properties. If there is a Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer and signature status. A valid code signature can help establish publisher identity and that the signed file has not changed, but it is not a universal safety guarantee. See Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ.
- Scan the installer with Microsoft Defender and keep Windows Security definitions current.
- If a specific malware detection persists, do not override it. Remove the file, obtain a fresh copy from an official page, and use Microsoft’s PUA and false-positive guidance if you believe a detection is mistaken.
What the real risks are during everyday use
RTSS is designed to interact with graphics applications so an overlay or frame limiter can work. This behavior can look suspicious at a high level and can conflict with software that also hooks into or monitors a game. Legitimate overlay hooking is not by itself evidence of malware, but a genuine download is not automatically compatible with every game or graphics setup.
There is no universal performance result. In one game and configuration, the overlay or limiter may work without a noticeable problem; in another, RTSS can be associated with stutter, crashes, a broken overlay, or a game that will not launch. Outcomes can depend on the game, graphics API, driver, limiter mode, frame generation, synchronization settings, monitor refresh rate, and other active overlays. A frame limit may reduce unnecessary rendering or improve perceived consistency in some situations; RTSS does not inherently increase a game’s rendering performance.

RTSS is presented as a local monitoring and overlay utility, but that alone does not establish a comprehensive privacy or network-activity claim. There is not enough information here to say that every build collects no data. Users who want to inspect outbound connections can use Windows Firewall or a network monitor; that is an optional privacy check, not a normal installation requirement.
Anti-cheat and competitive games
Some anti-cheat systems may block overlays or object to software that hooks into a game process. A block does not, on its own, prove that RTSS is malicious; it can reflect a game’s policy or technical compatibility. Policies vary by title and can change with game or anti-cheat updates, so RTSS cannot be described as universally permitted.
- Check the game publisher’s current support or anti-cheat guidance.
- If a competitive game refuses to launch, shows an overlay warning, or behaves unexpectedly, exit RTSS and test again.
- Use a per-game RTSS profile rather than applying an overlay globally, and leave RTSS disabled for a title that does not support it.
- Do not bypass anti-cheat protections, rename hook components, or install unofficial plugins to force an overlay to work.
Install and configure RTSS conservatively
- Open the official Guru3D RTSS page and verify the domain. If using Afterburner instead, use the official MSI page.
- Download a final release unless you have a specific reason to test a beta, then scan the installer and inspect its file properties before running it.
- Install only the components you want. If the installer asks to restart Windows, follow its prompt.
- For a first test, use the default or low application-detection setting, avoid a global frame limit, and do not add custom plugins or enable Scanline Sync until the basic setup works.
- Test with a noncompetitive game or benchmark, then create a per-game profile if you want different behavior for a particular title.
For Afterburner monitoring, open Settings → Monitoring, select a metric, and enable Show in On-Screen Display for it. RTSS must be running for the overlay, and MSI says Afterburner must also remain running when its monitoring data is being shown in-game. See MSI’s monitoring instructions.

Fix common RTSS problems
A game crashes or will not launch
- Exit the game, then exit RTSS from the Windows notification area. Close MSI Afterburner too if it is running.
- Launch the game again. If the problem disappears, disable RTSS for that title or configure a per-game profile with conservative settings.
- Check the publisher’s current overlay and anti-cheat guidance. Update RTSS and graphics drivers only from their official sources.
The overlay is missing
- Make sure RTSS is running. If the metrics come from Afterburner, make sure Afterburner is running too.
- In Afterburner, confirm the metric is selected under Settings → Monitoring and that Show in On-Screen Display is enabled.
- Check that the game has an RTSS profile, application detection is not disabled, and the game allows third-party overlays.
- Temporarily disable other overlays. A conflict or an unsupported rendering path may prevent the display.
Performance worsens or frametimes become uneven
Change one setting at a time so you can isolate the cause:
- Disable the overlay while leaving RTSS running, then test.
- Disable the frame limiter; if relevant, change its mode and test again.
- Turn off Scanline Sync or temporarily disable frame generation.
- Close other overlays, such as Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, or a graphics-driver overlay.
- Test with RTSS completely closed and compare frametime behavior under the same game settings, driver version, and background conditions.
Closing RTSS and seeing a difference is a useful clue, not conclusive proof of the cause. Guru3D’s official RTSS page includes compatibility notes for interactions involving other software and graphics drivers.
Windows Security detects the file
Do not immediately create an exclusion. Confirm the download domain, identify whether the alert is a reputation warning, PUA detection, or named malware, then scan a fresh official download. If a named threat persists or the source cannot be verified, do not install it. Microsoft provides guidance on PUA protection and reporting suspected false positives.

Disable startup or uninstall RTSS
If you do not need an automatic overlay or frame limit, there is no need to have RTSS start with Windows. Disable its startup option in RTSS when troubleshooting, or exit it from the notification area to test a game without it. To remove it, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find RivaTuner Statistics Server, open its menu, and choose Uninstall. If you also want to remove MSI Afterburner, uninstall it separately. Use the uninstaller rather than deleting program folders by hand.
When RTSS is worth installing
RTSS is a practical choice if you want a configurable FPS or frametime overlay, detailed monitoring from Afterburner, or a per-game frame limiter. If all you need is a basic FPS counter, check the game’s own display or an overlay already provided by Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA, or AMD before adding another background tool. Those options may not provide the same controls, but can be enough for a simple counter.
For most users, the sensible approach is to install RTSS only from Guru3D or an official MSI Afterburner package, verify any unexpected Windows warning instead of bypassing it, and use per-game settings. If a particular game objects or develops a problem, close RTSS and follow that game publisher’s guidance.
