Which port on the Nintendo Switch dock?
Use the dock’s port labeled HDMI OUT. On both the standard dock and the dock with a LAN port, it is inside the rear cable compartment. The nearby AC ADAPTER, USB, and LAN ports are not substitutes for the video connection.
Official diagrams show the port locations on the standard dock and LAN-port dock: Nintendo Switch dock diagram and Nintendo Switch dock with LAN port diagram.

Which HDMI port on the TV or monitor?
Use any available socket labeled HDMI IN or simply HDMI. HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and HDMI 3 are separate inputs, not different Switch modes. If you connect to HDMI 2, set the display’s source to HDMI 2.
A port marked ARC or eARC can generally accept the Switch’s signal, although those labels describe audio-return features that the Switch does not require. A “Game,” 4K, 120 Hz, or 8K label is not necessary for the original Switch family.
How to connect a Switch to a TV
- Turn off the TV or monitor.
- Open the dock’s rear cover.
- Plug the Nintendo AC adapter into the dock port labeled AC ADAPTER.
- Connect the HDMI cable to the dock port labeled HDMI OUT.
- Connect the other end directly to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- Close the rear cover and turn on the display.
- Select the HDMI source matching the socket you used.
- Insert the console into the dock with its screen facing the same direction as the dock’s front.
When the connection is working, the TV should show the Switch interface or game and the console’s built-in screen should turn off. Nintendo’s complete procedure is at How to Connect Nintendo Switch to a TV. Automatic input switching is not guaranteed because it depends on the television and its HDMI-CEC settings.
Does the Switch need a special HDMI specification?
No special gaming socket is required for a normal TV-mode setup. Nintendo specifies video output of up to 1080p via HDMI in TV mode for both the standard Switch and Switch OLED model: Nintendo Switch technical specifications. A 4K or HDMI 2.1 input will not make these systems output 4K.

Can the console connect directly to the TV?
The supported setup for the original Switch and Switch OLED is console-to-dock-to-TV. Nintendo describes the console’s USB Type-C connector for charging or connection to the dock, not as a standard direct HDMI output. Third-party USB-C-to-HDMI adapters and portable docks vary in compatibility, so they should not be treated as guaranteed alternatives.
What if the TV says “No signal”?
Check the basic connection
- Verify that the cable is in the dock’s HDMI OUT, not the AC adapter or another port.
- Verify that the display end is in an HDMI input, not an HDMI output.
- Choose the matching HDMI source on the TV or monitor.
- Confirm that the dock has power and the console is fully seated.
- Remove a protective case if it prevents the console from seating completely.
- Connect the dock directly to the display rather than through a soundbar, AV receiver, splitter, capture device, or adapter.
Isolate the failing component
Nintendo recommends this sequence for a blank screen:
- Power off the TV.
- Disconnect the dock’s cables.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the wall and from the dock or console for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter directly to a wall outlet.
- Reconnect HDMI directly from the dock to the TV.
- Try another HDMI input.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Try another TV or monitor.
- If available, test another compatible dock.
See Nintendo’s full troubleshooting guidance for a blank TV image at Blank Screen or No Image Displayed on the TV. The dock with a LAN port may also require a dock-firmware update during troubleshooting.

Using receivers, soundbars, switches, and monitors
AV receiver or soundbar
These devices can centralize HDMI switching and audio, but they add another failure point. For diagnosis, connect the dock directly to the TV first; add the receiver or soundbar after the direct connection works.
HDMI switch
If every TV input is occupied, an HDMI switch can share one input. It is optional and introduces another device, power requirement, and compatibility variable.
Computer monitor
Connect HDMI OUT from the dock to the monitor’s HDMI input and select that source. If the monitor has no speakers or headphone output, arrange a separate audio solution.

Do not buy a premium cable just to choose between HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. Consider a replacement HDMI cable only if the existing one is missing, damaged, or intermittent. If another cable, input, display, and power reset fail, an official replacement dock or AC adapter may be relevant; Nintendo identifies the standard dock as HAC-007, the LAN-port dock as HEG-007, and the standard AC adapter as HAC-002. Official products are listed at Nintendo’s store.
