Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Your Xbox profile is accessed through a personal Microsoft account, not a separate account that can be merged later. Sign in with the Microsoft account that already owns your gamertag, achievements, purchases and subscriptions. Registering the console at Microsoft’s device site is a separate hardware-management step and does not move an Xbox profile or games.
What linking your Xbox actually does
Signing in with the right Microsoft account loads the Xbox identity associated with it: your gamertag, friends, privacy settings, achievements, Gamerscore, digital purchases, downloadable content and subscriptions. Microsoft also uses the account for security, billing, order history, family management and connected-device controls. See Microsoft’s account overview and Xbox account information.
Cross-device benefits are conditional. Xbox Play Anywhere and cross-save or cross-progression work only for supported games, platforms and features; signing in does not make every Xbox game available on PC or transfer every save.
| Action | What it connects | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Sign in on Xbox | Your Xbox profile and account entitlements on that console | Merge two Microsoft accounts or transfer another account’s purchases |
| Register the console online | Physical hardware for device management, warranty and support | Move a gamertag, games, saves, achievements or subscriptions |
Before you start
- Connect the Xbox to the internet and install available system updates.
- Have the Microsoft account email address, phone number or alias and its password.
- Keep access to your authenticator, phone or backup email for security verification.
- Use the original account tied to the gamertag, rather than creating a replacement account.
Microsoft accounts can have aliases that share one password, so the address you remember may differ from the sign-in address shown on receipts or other devices. Microsoft’s sign-in guidance is at How to sign in to a Microsoft account.

Labels and screen order can differ between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and system updates. Adding another person’s account gives that person their own profile; it does not transfer ownership of games or subscriptions. Microsoft documents the device and account connection process at How to connect a device to a Microsoft account.
Register the physical console online
Register the hardware only if you want device management, warranty information or support tools.

- Go to account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in.
- Select Register device.
- Enter the Xbox serial number and submit it.
You can manage or rename registered devices through Microsoft’s device page. Registration is not proof that the desired Xbox profile is signed in and cannot migrate content between accounts. See Manage devices used with your Microsoft account.
Add a child or another family member
Create or manage the Microsoft family group
- Sign in at family.microsoft.com with the family organizer’s account.
- Select Add a family member.
- Choose Member or Organizer.
- Enter the person’s email address or phone number.
- Have the invitee accept with their own Microsoft account.
Only organizers can add members, and a child may require adult consent depending on age and region. Family Safety controls cover screen time, content, privacy and spending; they do not automatically grant another person ownership of games or subscriptions.

Add the family member on Xbox
On the console, use Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members → Add to family. The available branch depends on whether the person already has an Xbox account on the console or elsewhere. Give each player a separate Microsoft account rather than sharing the organizer’s credentials. Details are in Microsoft’s family-group guide.
Find the Microsoft account behind a gamertag
A gamertag is the public Xbox identity and is not necessarily the account email. Do not recreate the gamertag on a new account while looking for it.

- Check Microsoft products, Windows PCs, phones and browsers where you may still be signed in.
- Use Microsoft’s account-discovery guidance at Check products or services where you used your Microsoft account.
- On Xbox, inspect the account information associated with the existing profile rather than treating the gamertag as an email address.
If sign-in fails or content is missing
- Recheck the spelling of the email address or phone number.
- Try another alias belonging to the same Microsoft account.
- Use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper.
- Reset the password if prompted and confirm that verification codes can arrive.
- Make sure you are using a personal Microsoft account, not a work or school account.
- If necessary, complete the account-recovery form.
Use a familiar device and location for recovery and gather old passwords, account details and information from a frequently used Xbox; Microsoft may request the console’s hardware information. If two-step verification is enabled and no alternate method is available, Microsoft warns that support may be unable to bypass it. A 25-digit recovery code can help when available; generating a new one invalidates the previous code, as explained at Microsoft’s recovery-code page.
If games, achievements or a subscription are absent, sign out and verify the gamertag and account before checking the library, subscriptions and order history. Purchases remain associated with the purchasing Microsoft account; registering the console or adding a family member cannot restore content owned elsewhere.

Use the account across Xbox, PC and mobile
Use the same Microsoft account in the Xbox mobile app and supported Windows Xbox experiences to access the profile and compatible social features. Xbox Play Anywhere can provide shared purchase and progress benefits for eligible titles on supported devices, but availability, saves, multiplayer and catalog access remain game-specific. Check the individual game’s listing rather than assuming universal cross-play or cross-save.
Secure the account after linking
- Use a strong, unique password and keep recovery email and phone details current.
- Enable an authenticator or another strong verification method.
- Store a recovery code offline in a secure place.
- Keep children on their own accounts inside the family group.
- Never give another person your password or one-time security code.
Verify that the correct account is connected
- The expected gamertag and profile picture appear on Xbox.
- Older achievements and Gamerscore are visible.
- Owned games, downloadable content and subscriptions appear under the appropriate account areas.
- The console appears at account.microsoft.com/devices if you registered it.
- The same account works in the Xbox mobile app or supported Windows Xbox app.
- Family members and privacy, communication, spending and content settings are correct.
The device listing alone is not proof that the desired Xbox profile is signed in. If the Microsoft account was closed recently, Microsoft’s current guidance says it may be reopened during a 30- or 60-day grace period, depending on the closure process; sign in and complete verification promptly. After that period, deletion may be permanent. See Reopen your Microsoft account.
