Short answer: On the original Nintendo Switch, the practical mainstream choices in the United States are YouTube for free general video and Crunchyroll for anime. Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Max are not current native-Switch recommendations. Hulu ended on Switch on February 5, 2026, and Twitch support ended on January 31, 2024.
This guide covers Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED. Switch 2 is a separate compatibility case; check its current eShop listing before installing anything.

The current streaming situation on Nintendo Switch
The original Switch family has a much smaller video-app selection than PlayStation, Xbox, smart TVs and dedicated streaming devices. Based on current US-facing Nintendo support information, YouTube and Crunchyroll are the two meaningful mainstream options. That is not an absolute worldwide list: eShop availability, catalogs and subscription terms vary by country.
Nintendo Switch Online is a gaming subscription, not a key that unlocks streaming services. YouTube explicitly works with an internet connection and no Nintendo Switch Online membership. Crunchyroll uses its own account and subscription system.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Switch 2 warning
Nintendo’s Crunchyroll support page currently says the app is not compatible with Switch 2, while the Nintendo eShop listing contains conflicting Switch 2 metadata. Nintendo’s YouTube FAQ likewise directs Switch 2 owners to check the current eShop or Nintendo Store. Verify compatibility on your own console rather than assuming an original-Switch listing applies.
Best overall: YouTube
YouTube is the best free streaming app for most original-Switch owners because it combines the broadest catalog with no Nintendo Switch Online requirement. It covers creator videos, music, game guides, trailers, live channels and educational material in one app.
What YouTube supports
- Free app download and viewing with a Google/YouTube account or guest access where available.
- Purchased videos through Library → Purchases.
- YouTube Premium ad-free playback and YouTube Originals when you sign in.
- Handheld, tabletop and docked TV use.
Nintendo documents these features and limits in its YouTube for Nintendo Switch FAQ.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Important limitations
- No offline downloads in the Switch app, including YouTube Premium downloads.
- No Premium background playback.
- YouTube TV is not available through the Switch YouTube app.
- You cannot livestream Switch gameplay directly to YouTube from inside the app.
- Switch screenshot and video-capture functions are unavailable while using YouTube.
- Maximum output is 720p in handheld mode and 1080p when docked; it is not a 4K streaming device.
For parental controls, Nintendo says the app is accessible when the system restriction level allows Teen or Not Restricted content. Adjust restrictions in the console’s parental-control settings if the app is blocked.

Choose YouTube if you want free, varied video, music or game content and do not need downloads or premium movie and television catalogs. YouTube Premium can remove ads, but it does not turn the Switch app into an offline player.
Best for anime: Crunchyroll
Crunchyroll is the specialist choice for anime, including subtitles and dubs in supported languages, simulcast episodes and a catalog focused on Japanese animation. The app supports the original Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED in handheld, tabletop and TV modes, subject to country availability.
Rank #3
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Free and Premium access
The app is free to download. Premium benefits include ad-free viewing and new episodes soon after Japanese broadcast when a title and region qualify. Crunchyroll’s live US pricing page, checked August 18, 2026, showed:
| Plan | Price shown | Switch-relevant point |
|---|---|---|
| Fan | $9.99/month | Premium streaming; not the tier Nintendo identifies for Switch offline viewing |
| Mega Fan | $13.99/month | Eligible for offline viewing on Switch |
| Ultimate Fan | $17.99/month | Eligible for offline viewing on Switch |
Prices are before applicable taxes, benefits vary by region, and plans can change. The Nintendo eShop listing advertises a 14-day Premium trial, while Crunchyroll’s current Premium page shows a 7-day Mega Fan trial; treat either offer as account-, region- or promotion-dependent and confirm the live terms before subscribing. The Mega Fan trial shown on Crunchyroll’s page automatically renews at $13.99 per month unless canceled.

Offline viewing on Switch
Nintendo identifies Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan as the tiers that can sync episodes or whole seasons for offline viewing. If no microSD card is inserted, downloads use internal storage; with a card inserted, they can use the microSD card. Video files can be large, so check available space before a trip. Offline access remains governed by your Crunchyroll account and the service’s app rules, not permanent ownership of the files.
Rank #4
- Compact, lightweight handheld system
- Available in a range of fun colors
- Online and local wireless multiplayer
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Normal streaming and synchronization require an internet connection. Nintendo recommends not playing another video at the same time as offline content sync. If playback fails, improve Wi-Fi, lower the app’s playback quality and test another title; contact Crunchyroll for account or subscription issues.
Verdict
Crunchyroll is the best Switch app for anime and the only clear recommendation here for offline video. It is not a substitute for a general movie-and-TV service, and availability, language options, catalog and pricing depend on territory.
Apps that are not current Switch choices
| Service | Current status on original Switch | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Hulu | Nintendo removed it from the eShop on November 6, 2025, and discontinued the Switch service on February 5, 2026. | Use a TV app, streaming device, phone, tablet, computer or another console. |
| Twitch | Support ended January 31, 2024; it cannot be downloaded, used or redownloaded. | Watch on another supported device. |
| Netflix | No current native-Switch recommendation in the official material covered here. | Use your TV, a dedicated streaming device or another personal device. |
| Disney+ | No current native-Switch recommendation in the official material covered here. | Use another supported device. |
| Prime Video | No current native-Switch recommendation in the official material covered here. | Use another supported device. |
| Max | No current native-Switch recommendation in the official material covered here. | Use another supported device. |
| YouTube TV | Not available inside the Nintendo Switch YouTube app. | Use the service’s supported TV, mobile or web platform. |
These conclusions are deliberately narrower than old “best Switch apps” lists. Historic Wii, Wii U, 3DS or Switch 2 information does not establish compatibility with the original Switch, and an old cached eShop result may describe a discontinued app.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
No for YouTube. Nintendo explicitly says an internet connection is sufficient. Crunchyroll is likewise managed through a separate Crunchyroll account; Nintendo’s instructions do not require Switch Online for its app. Do not buy Switch Online to obtain Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Twitch or another unavailable service.
US Switch Online pricing is relevant only if you also want Nintendo’s gaming benefits: $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months, $19.99 for 12 months, $34.99 for a 12-month family membership, $49.99 for a 12-month individual Expansion Pack or $79.99 for a 12-month family Expansion Pack. See Nintendo’s pricing page; prices and terms can change.
How to install YouTube or Crunchyroll
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the Nintendo Account user.
- Choose Search and enter YouTube or Crunchyroll.
- Open the official listing and verify the publisher before downloading.
- Select the free download option, then launch the app from HOME.
- Sign in with your Google/YouTube account or Crunchyroll account.
Labels can vary by system software and region. If an app does not appear, check the console model, Nintendo Account country/region and your local eShop. Do not sideload APKs, install unofficial ports, use piracy apps or modify the console to bypass regional or platform restrictions.
Troubleshooting common problems
The app is missing from eShop
- Confirm whether you own original Switch hardware or Switch 2.
- Search the current eShop directly, not an old web article.
- Check your Nintendo Account country/region.
- Look for a Nintendo discontinuation notice; Hulu and Twitch are examples of apps that disappeared.
Crunchyroll login works but video will not play
- Improve the Wi-Fi environment or move closer to the router.
- Reduce playback quality in Crunchyroll.
- Try another title to distinguish a connection issue from a title-specific problem.
- Contact Crunchyroll for account, billing or entitlement problems.
Crunchyroll downloads fail or fill storage
- Confirm the account is Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan.
- Check internal storage and microSD capacity.
- Allow the sync to finish without simultaneous video playback.
- Remember that offline access follows the service’s account and app rules.
YouTube has no download button
That is expected on Switch. YouTube Premium downloads are supported on compatible mobile devices, not in the Nintendo Switch app.

If Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Max, live TV or a broader catalog is your priority, use the app built into your television or a Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV device, phone, tablet, computer or another game console. Casting from a phone or using a capture card is not equivalent to having an official streaming app on the Switch and can add unnecessary restrictions and complexity.
Do not confuse video streaming with cloud versions of games. In a cloud game, the game runs on a server and the Switch receives the result; Nintendo explains that these titles require a stable, high-speed connection in its Cloud Versions FAQ.
Quick Recap
Best choice by reader type
| If you are… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A casual or free viewer | YouTube | Broad catalog, free access and no Switch Online requirement. |
| An anime viewer | Crunchyroll | Dedicated anime catalog, subtitles, dubs and simulcast options. |
| A traveler who needs offline video | Crunchyroll Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan | These are the Nintendo-identified tiers for offline downloads; plan storage in advance. |
| A Netflix, Disney+ or Prime Video viewer | Another device | The original Switch is not a broad premium-streaming platform. |
| A Twitch viewer | Another device | Twitch support ended January 31, 2024. |
| A Switch 2 owner | Check the current eShop per app | Compatibility is not automatically inherited from the original Switch, and Nintendo’s Crunchyroll information is currently inconsistent. |
