Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe 2024 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is one of the most compelling small gaming laptops of its generation: a roughly 3.3-pound aluminum machine with a sharp 14-inch OLED screen, capable RTX 4060 or 4070 graphics, and the ports and polish to work as an everyday computer. Its strengths are portability, display quality, and versatility—not maximum frame rates or value. In 2026, it makes sense primarily at a meaningful discount, especially in the RTX 4070 configuration.
Quick verdict
- Best for: Players who travel, study, or create as well as game, and want a premium screen in a genuinely portable system.
- Best configuration: RTX 4070 with 32GB memory, if its price is close enough to the RTX 4060 model to justify the upgrade.
- Biggest strength: The unusually complete mix of OLED image quality, compact aluminum construction, and everyday usability.
- Main compromises: The GPU’s 90W maximum power target, heat and fan noise under load, and limited long-term flexibility compared with an upgrade-friendly larger laptop.
- 2026 value: Consider it when discounted and clearly cheaper than a comparable newer G14. The 2024 launch MSRP is historical, not a current price guide.
“Apex” is fair only if it means a high point in the balance of gaming capability and portability. The G14 is not the fastest gaming laptop, the best performance-per-dollar choice, or a desktop replacement.
What changed in the 2024 redesign?
ASUS shifted the G14 toward a thinner, lighter premium format. The redesign brought a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, a 16:10 OLED display, a larger trackpad, a revised cooling system, and the Slash Lighting lid accent. ASUS describes liquid-metal CPU thermal compound, improved heatpipes, and second-generation Arc Flow fans as part of the cooling design. These features describe the engineering approach; they do not guarantee quiet or cool operation in every workload. See the ASUS launch announcement and the official product page.
This is best viewed as a change in priorities rather than an across-the-board improvement over the 2023 model. The 2024 version places more emphasis on portability, screen quality, and general-purpose refinement; buyers focused on sustained GPU power, cooling headroom, or upgrade flexibility may prefer a larger system.

These are not universal specifications for every listing called “G14 (2024).” ASUS lists multiple GA403 variants with differences including graphics, memory, and operating system. Check the full model number and retailer SKU before buying. ASUS’s configuration and specification table is the place to confirm a particular variant.
The OLED display is the reason to choose this G14
The 2880×1800 OLED panel is sharp, and its 16:10 shape offers more vertical workspace than a traditional 16:9 screen. OLED’s deep blacks and high perceived contrast benefit games and films, while the 120Hz refresh rate makes motion feel smoother than on a standard 60Hz panel. ASUS lists G-SYNC support, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, HDR support, Pantone validation, and Dolby Vision; those are manufacturer specifications, not a substitute for independent calibration or a guarantee that every unit is equally suited to color-critical work. The 0.2ms response-time figure is likewise ASUS’s rating rather than a universally verified independent measurement. See the ASUS technical release and specifications.
The screen’s native resolution is also demanding for an RTX 4060 or 4070 in modern games. Use native resolution for lighter titles, older games, and workloads that leave enough GPU headroom. For demanding releases, lower the render resolution or use DLSS when available. Frame Generation can help, but it is most useful when the underlying frame rate is already reasonably responsive; it cannot make every low-frame-rate situation feel good. ASUS markets the laptop with DLSS 3.5 features including Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction (ASUS product page).
As with OLED laptops generally, static desktop elements can raise burn-in concerns over long use, and a glossy surface can reflect nearby light. Buyers who leave a fixed interface on screen for extended periods should use sensible display-sleep settings and consider whether OLED fits their habits.

Gaming performance: capable, with a clear power limit
The GPU name alone does not predict performance. ASUS specifies a maximum 90W GPU TGP with Dynamic Boost for this G14, so its RTX 4070 should not be treated as equivalent to an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in a larger system with a higher power budget and more cooling capacity. The exact result also depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, DLSS options, driver, and whether the laptop is plugged in. Check ASUS’s product page and specifications for the stated GPU limit.
In practical terms, the G14 is a strong fit for high-settings 1080p or scaled-resolution gaming, many games at native resolution with sensible settings, and DLSS-assisted ray tracing. Esports titles can make good use of the 120Hz screen, though competitive players seeking a 240Hz-or-faster panel should look elsewhere. The laptop can also accelerate creative applications, but a thicker workstation or gaming system can sustain heavy workloads more effectively.
Published reviews do not all test the same configuration. PC Gamer reviewed a Ryzen 9 8945HS, RTX 4070, 32GB, 1TB configuration; RTINGS tested a Ryzen 9/RTX 4070/16GB/1TB version. Their results should be read in the context of each review’s test unit and method, not combined into a single promise for every G14. See PC Gamer’s review and RTINGS’ review.
Heat and fan noise are the portability trade-off
ASUS’s liquid metal, heatpipes, and fan design aim to move heat efficiently, but a thin chassis still has less room for cooling than a large gaming laptop. Under demanding play or rendering, fans can become intrusive in performance-focused modes and surfaces can grow hot. Quiet modes reduce noise by limiting performance; there is no profile that removes the trade-off.

Notebookcheck reported a maximum chassis-temperature result of about 110°F (46.6°C) in its testing. That figure belongs to its test setup and measurement location, not every surface or use case; ambient conditions, workload, and fan profile all matter. See Notebookcheck’s review.
- Use a hard, level surface and keep intake vents unobstructed.
- Expect fan behavior to change with Armoury Crate mode, firmware, and workload.
- A cooling pad may help airflow around the laptop, but it cannot raise the system’s GPU power limit.
- For quieter play, choose a less aggressive profile and accept reduced performance.
Battery life: useful away from an outlet, not all-day gaming
Tom’s Hardware measured 6 hours and 45 minutes in a battery test combining web browsing, OpenGL tests, and video streaming over Wi-Fi with the display set to 150 nits. This is a controlled result for that review’s setup, not a prediction for every owner or workload. Screen brightness and refresh rate, graphics mode, Windows power settings, background tasks, keyboard lighting, Wi-Fi, and battery age can all change runtime. See Tom’s Hardware’s review.
Light productivity can make the G14 more practical away from the charger than many gaming laptops, but gaming on battery is a different, more demanding use and should not be confused with that mixed-use test. ASUS says fast charging can take the battery from 0% to 50% in approximately 30 minutes; the result depends on the charger and charging conditions (ASUS product page).
Build, controls, audio, and connections
ASUS lists the US model at approximately 0.63 inches thick and 3.31 pounds. That makes it easier to carry than a typical high-performance gaming laptop, although the power adapter still adds to a travel bag. Dimensions and weight can be presented differently across regional pages, so confirm the relevant market and configuration. See the US product page and global product page.

The redesigned large trackpad and compact chassis help the G14 serve as a general-purpose computer as well as a gaming machine. Its 14-inch footprint and keyboard layout are still compromises for players who want a full-size keyboard or a large screen. Independent review coverage evaluates the keyboard, touchpad, speakers, webcam, microphone, and wireless connectivity, but those results should be consulted for the specific quality measures rather than inferred from the premium design. RTINGS covers these categories in its G14 review.
For a 14-inch laptop, the connection selection is unusually broad: USB4 Type-C with DisplayPort and power-delivery support, a second USB-C with DisplayPort, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, HDMI 2.1, a UHS-II microSD reader, and a 3.5mm audio jack. That is useful for external displays, peripherals, and media cards, though buyers should verify charging and display-output behavior for their exact configuration. ASUS lists the ports in its technical release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it a good laptop for creative work?
Yes, particularly for mobile photo editing, coding, and GPU-accelerated applications. The high-resolution OLED, wide-gamut positioning, discrete RTX graphics, and microSD connectivity make the G14 more useful for creative work than a gaming laptop with a basic screen. ASUS also positions it for creators and NVIDIA Studio applications (launch announcement).
There are limits: 14 inches can feel cramped for timeline-heavy editing, long renders expose the cooling limits, and 16GB configurations are less appealing for demanding projects. For color-critical work, calibrate the individual panel rather than relying solely on factory claims. OLED burn-in considerations are especially relevant for interfaces that stay static for long sessions.

Which configuration should you buy?
| Configuration | Better fit for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 4060 | Lower-cost entry, general use, and gaming at 1080p or scaled resolution | Less graphics headroom; consider it when meaningfully cheaper than the 4070 version |
| RTX 4070 | Higher settings, more ray-tracing headroom, and heavier GPU-accelerated creative work | Still subject to the G14’s 90W maximum GPU target; not equivalent to higher-power implementations |
| 16GB memory | Less demanding gaming and everyday work | Less headroom for serious creative workloads; confirm whether it meets your needs before purchase |
| 32GB memory | More demanding multitasking and creative projects | May carry a substantial configuration premium; compare the full SKU price |
ASUS lists both GPU options with 8GB of GDDR6 memory and a 90W maximum design target on the 2024 platform. The RTX 4070 is the more attractive performance choice when the price difference is modest; the 4060 retains the same basic screen and chassis strengths. Because memory, operating system, and other details vary by GA403 model, compare complete SKUs rather than relying on a retailer’s abbreviated product name. The ASUS specifications page lists the variants.
Should you buy the 2024 G14 in 2026?
ASUS announced US launch pricing of $1,599.99 to $2,199.99, depending on configuration, in February 2024. That is a historical MSRP range, not a verified 2026 street price. ASUS’s product pages list specifications and variants but do not establish a consistent live price here, so compare current retailer listings, warranty terms, and exact SKUs before deciding. See the launch announcement and current product page.
There is now a newer generation to consider: ASUS announced 2026 G14 models with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors and RTX 50-series graphics, with US availability beginning May 22, 2026. That does not prove the new laptop is better in every configuration, but it makes the 2024 model a discount proposition rather than an automatic premium buy. Compare the exact newer configuration and live prices; see ASUS’s 2026 announcement.
Buy the 2024 G14 if
- You need a portable laptop that can game and handle school, travel, or creative work.
- The OLED screen and premium chassis matter as much as peak frame rates.
- You can get the RTX 4070/32GB configuration at a clear discount and have checked its exact warranty and model number.
- You are comfortable with gaming fan noise, heat, and the configuration’s memory limits.
Choose something else if
- Maximum frame rate, sustained rendering, or performance per dollar matters more than carrying weight.
- You want a 240Hz-or-faster panel, a larger display, or a full-size keyboard.
- You require guaranteed memory upgradeability or are concerned about OLED use with static interfaces.
- A newer G14 with RTX 50-series graphics costs about the same as the 2024 RTX 4070 model.
For raw gaming performance, a larger laptop with more GPU power and cooling headroom is the more sensible direction. For the unusual combination of a premium OLED display and a genuinely portable gaming system, the 2024 G14 remains appealing—but only when its price reflects its age and limits.
