The best gaming collection removes friction instead of adding decoration. Use this platform-aware guide to choose the ten technology categories that actually improve play.

The best gaming collection is not the one with the most RGB accessories. It is the one that removes your biggest sources of friction: poor visibility, awkward controls, weak audio, limited storage, unreliable networking, dead batteries, or inaccessible interfaces. Start with your platform, games, room and personal needs, then buy only the technology that solves a recurring problem.

Quick guide: what belongs in a gaming toolkit?

Item Who needs it Problem it solves Buy first? Main warning
Gaming platform Everyone Runs your games Yes Choose around the games and services you actually use
Display Everyone Visibility and motion clarity Yes Match resolution and refresh rate to your hardware
Primary control Everyone Accurate, comfortable input Yes Controller and keyboard/mouse are not interchangeable for every genre
Precision mouse Most PC players Aiming and cursor control Usually Shape and sensor consistency matter more than headline DPI
Gaming keyboard PC players Fast, flexible commands Usually Noise, layout and switch feel affect suitability
Headset or audio Most players Game sound and communication Usually Check comfort, microphone and platform support
Reliable network Online and cloud players Lower latency and fewer dropouts Yes for online play Download speed alone does not describe connection quality
Expandable storage Large-library owners More room for games When needed Some drives store games but cannot run current-generation titles
Charging and power Wireless and desktop users Readiness and equipment protection As needed Do not overload power strips or assume every USB-C cable has the same capabilities
Specialist upgrade Creators, accessibility users and enthusiasts Removes a specific personal bottleneck Only when relevant Buy for your use case, not for decoration

1. A gaming platform that fits your games

Your platform determines every compatibility decision that follows. A Windows gaming PC, PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch-style hybrid, handheld PC and cloud service each impose different requirements. On PC, select components around the games you play, screen performance, loading times and multitasking rather than one universal specification; Microsoft’s current guidance uses those same factors. Microsoft’s gaming-PC guide explains the approach.

Console and handheld buyers should treat first-party accessories, storage formats and wireless standards as platform-specific. Cloud players should prioritize a supported device and a stable low-latency connection before spending on visual upgrades.

Platform priorities

  • PC: Display, keyboard and mouse, audio, network, storage and possibly a USB hub or dock.
  • PS5/PS5 Pro: HDMI display with suitable HDR and VRR, DualSense, compatible audio, approved storage and Ethernet where practical.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Compatible display, Xbox Wireless Controller with a rechargeable solution, headset, and either an Expansion Card or archival drive.
  • Nintendo or similar handheld: Additional controller, supported microSD card, protective case and charging equipment; a high-refresh monitor is not automatically useful.
  • Cloud gaming: Supported controller, compatible screen or streaming device and a network tested at the times you play.

2. A display matched to your hardware

Resolution describes image detail; refresh rate describes how often the screen can update; variable refresh rate (VRR) synchronizes updates with fluctuating frame output to help reduce tearing and stutter. HDR can expand brightness and contrast, but an HDR label alone does not establish brightness, local dimming or accurate tone mapping.

Razer BlackShark V2 X Xbox Gaming Headset, 3.5mm Audio Jack, Black
  • TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
  • HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
  • ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
  • WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion

Choose the right specification

  • 1080p: Sensible for entry-level PCs, older consoles and high-frame-rate play on a modest budget.
  • 1440p: Often a strong fit for a midrange PC and desk-distance viewing.
  • 4K: Best when your console or GPU can drive it at a frame rate you value and your viewing distance benefits from the extra detail.
  • Refresh rate: Useful only when the connected platform and game can produce enough frames.
  • Inputs: Check HDMI version, DisplayPort, USB-C video support and the number of devices you will connect.
  • Response time and input latency: Important, but manufacturer response-time figures are not always measured under comparable conditions.

A monitor and a television serve different rooms. A monitor favors desk distance, high refresh rates and desktop connectivity; a TV favors couch distance, large size and shared living-room use. PlayStation’s 27-inch monitor documentation notes that its panel can reach up to 240 Hz with a compatible PC or Mac but up to 120 Hz from a PS5, illustrating the difference between display capability and console output. It also details QHD, HDR, VRR and port support. See the PlayStation monitor specifications. For PS5 HDR, 120 Hz, VRR and transfer-rate troubleshooting, use PlayStation’s 4K resolution guide. Windows users can review refresh-rate behavior in Microsoft’s display support and HDR connection requirements in its HDR guide.

3. The right primary control device

Controller versus keyboard and mouse is a genre and preference decision, not a quality hierarchy. Controllers suit platformers, sports, racing, many action games and couch play. Keyboard and mouse generally provide more granular aiming and many simultaneous commands for shooters, strategy games, simulations and PC-first titles.

Some PC games support both, but menus, aim assistance, vibration and button prompts vary by title. Wireless models add freedom but also introduce charging, pairing, receiver placement and compatibility concerns. A console-branded controller may have limited features on another console or on PC. DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, for example, require game support and can require a wired USB connection on PC. PlayStation’s PC accessories guidance lists those limitations.

4. A precision gaming mouse

For PC players, a consistent sensor and a shape that fits your hand matter more than an extreme DPI number. Compare weight, grip style, button placement, cable flexibility, wireless receiver position and polling behavior. A lighter mouse can feel easier to steer, while a heavier model may feel steadier; neither is universally superior.

  • 【Wide Compatibility with Gaming Devices】Setup the perfect entertainment system by plugging in 2.4G USB. The convenience of dual USB work seamlessly with your PS5,PS4, PC, Mac, Laptop, Switch and saves you from swapping cables.

Wireless is convenient for a clean desk, but check battery endurance under your lighting and polling settings, whether the receiver needs a clear line of sight, and whether Bluetooth has different performance or button support from the supplied dongle. If you mostly play controller-friendly games, an ordinary office mouse may be sufficient.

5. A keyboard suited to your play style

Mechanical, membrane and low-profile keyboards can all be effective. Choose by switch feel, noise, layout, desk space, remapping and comfort rather than the word “gaming.” Linear switches feel smooth, tactile switches provide a bump and clicky switches are loud; manufacturers’ switch names do not guarantee an identical experience.

A compact layout frees desk space but may remove navigation keys or a number pad. A full-size board helps with spreadsheets and simulations. Mechanical construction, premium keycaps and RGB lighting can improve feel or customization, but they do not automatically improve game performance. Console and handheld players may not need a gaming keyboard at all.

6. Headset, headphones or speakers

Good audio equipment should remain comfortable for long sessions, deliver clear game sound and make your voice understandable. Check platform compatibility, chat mixing, sidetone, microphone monitoring, replaceable ear pads and whether wireless operation uses Bluetooth or a proprietary low-latency link.

Match the design to the room

  • Closed-back headset: Better isolation and less sound leakage for shared rooms.
  • Open-back headphones: A more open presentation, but sound leaks and they suit quiet private spaces.
  • Headset microphone: Convenient for ordinary chat.
  • Standalone microphone plus headphones: More flexible for frequent streamers and creators, but it needs a stand, interface or boom and better room-noise control.

Do not assume “7.1,” AI noise cancellation or a larger driver automatically creates better positional sound; implementation and tuning differ. Keep volume at a reasonable level. PlayStation describes PULSE Elite’s low-latency PlayStation Link connection and its PS5, PC and mobile compatibility separately, a useful reminder to check the exact device combination. Review the compatibility details.

7. Reliable network hardware

Online play depends on latency, jitter, packet loss and Wi-Fi quality as well as download speed. Connect a fixed PC or console by Ethernet when the cable run is practical. If you must use Wi-Fi, place the access point close to the device, reduce interference and test during the hours your household actually plays.

A faster advertised broadband tier cannot repair poor ISP routing, a distant access point or packet loss. Cloud gaming is less forgiving because every frame travels over the network. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements recommend Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center, and at least 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps or 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are provider-specific targets, not a guarantee for every service. Check the current GeForce NOW requirements.

8. Expandable storage

Storage capacity determines how many games remain installed; storage speed and certification determine where they can run. An internal SSD is usually the best location for games that require fast access. Official expansion cards and approved M.2 drives are simpler but can cost more. External USB SSDs are useful for libraries and transfers, while hard drives offer cheaper capacity at lower speed. Supported handhelds may use microSD cards with platform-specific speed and capacity rules.

Platform restrictions matter

On PS5, an installed M.2 SSD can hold, download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games. USB extended storage can store PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played. Connect PS5-formatted USB storage directly to the console, not through a monitor hub. See PlayStation’s PS5 storage guidance.

Xbox Series X|S distinguishes ordinary external drives from the Storage Expansion Card when you need to run current-generation games directly. A cheaper external drive can still be valuable for archival storage and moving titles. Xbox explains its storage options here.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Charging, power and cable management

Rechargeable battery packs, charging docks and appropriately long USB-C cables reduce interruptions. Verify whether a controller can charge while in use, whether the cable supports the required data rate, and whether a wireless device needs its proprietary receiver. Keep cables away from walkways, pets and ventilation openings.

Use surge protection for expensive equipment and consider a UPS for a desktop PC, router, streamer or anyone who cannot risk losing an active recording or unsaved work during a brief outage. A UPS is not mandatory for every console owner. Never overload a power strip or bundle high-load equipment where heat cannot escape.

On PS5, controller charging during Rest Mode requires power to USB ports under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Supported newer PS5 models also include an Adaptive charging option. Follow PlayStation’s charging instructions.

10. One specialist upgrade for your actual bottleneck

The tenth category should be personal, not decorative. Choose one branch only when it solves a real recurring need.

Accessibility controls

Remapping, large-button or adaptive controllers, one-handed layouts, mounts, foot controls, alternative switches, voice control, subtitle customization and flexible profiles can be foundational technology. PS5 provides accessibility settings, closed-caption controls, game accessibility information and Access controller setup. Use the PS5 support hub for those options. An adaptive controller can be more essential than a premium headset for the person who needs it.

Capture and streaming equipment

Creators may need a capture card, webcam or phone-as-webcam, standalone microphone and lighting. Confirm capture-card support for your resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode, and understand how copy protection affects recording. Many platforms already provide direct clip capture, so extra hardware is unnecessary for occasional sharing.

USB dock or desk integration

Laptop users with too few ports may benefit from a powered dock or hub. Check its combined USB power and bandwidth limits, video outputs, Ethernet support and charging wattage. A monitor arm, cable tray or ergonomic adjustment can be a more valuable upgrade than another peripheral.

Genre-specific controls

Racing wheels, fight sticks, flight controls and specialized keypads make sense when one genre dominates your play time. They are poor purchases when they will sit unused.

Buy in the right order

Minimal setup

  • Use your existing platform.
  • Choose a compatible display.
  • Buy one suitable controller or keyboard/mouse set.
  • Add a basic headset if you use chat.
  • Use Ethernet or improve Wi-Fi placement.

Balanced setup

  • Upgrade to a display with VRR suited to your platform.
  • Replace uncomfortable primary controls.
  • Choose a headset with a clear microphone.
  • Add platform-compatible storage expansion.
  • Add rechargeable power and a safe cable solution.

Enthusiast or creator setup

  • Use a high-refresh display your hardware can actually drive.
  • Add specialized controls only for your main genres.
  • Use a dedicated microphone or capture card when your workflow needs it.
  • Prefer wired networking where possible.
  • Add backup power and ergonomic desk integration for valuable sessions.

Compatibility checklist before you buy

  1. Confirm the platform, operating system and exact console generation.
  2. Check whether the accessory is wired, Bluetooth or proprietary-wireless and whether an adapter is included.
  3. Match required USB, HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C standards.
  4. Verify supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR behavior.
  5. Check storage format, capacity limits and whether games can run directly from the drive.
  6. Read software, firmware and account requirements.
  7. Measure desk space, cable length, mounting points and viewing distance.
  8. Review warranty, return terms, stock status and the exact model or platform version.

Bottom line

Build around the weakest link you notice while playing. A suitable display, comfortable control method, clear audio and dependable network usually matter before premium switches, RGB lighting or a 240 Hz specification your platform cannot use. Add storage, power equipment and specialist technology only when your library, household, accessibility needs or creative work justify them.
