For most gaming PCs, choose a good tower air cooler. It costs less, installs more simply, and avoids pump and coolant-related failure modes. A 240 mm or larger all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooler is worthwhile when your CPU sustains high power, you want lower temperatures or fan speeds under heavy loads, or your case and build priorities favor a radiator. A custom loop is an enthusiast solution for cooling both the CPU and GPU, not a requirement for ordinary gaming.

Air and liquid cooling: what actually changes?

Both approaches move heat from the CPU into a surface area that airflow can cool. Thermal interface material transfers heat from the integrated heat spreader into the cooler.

Air-cooler heat path

  1. A copper or aluminum base absorbs CPU heat.
  2. Heat pipes spread it through a fin stack.
  3. One or two fans push air through the fins.
  4. Case intake and exhaust fans carry the warmed air away.

AIO liquid-cooler heat path

  1. A cold plate contacts the CPU.
  2. A pump circulates coolant through the block and tubing.
  3. The coolant carries heat to a radiator.
  4. Radiator fans release that heat into the case airflow.

Liquid does not make heat disappear; it transports heat to a larger radiator. Intel explains the fundamental trade-off in its air-versus-liquid comparison, while Corsair describes the components of an AIO in its AIO guide.

Air cooling: strengths and limits

A tower cooler uses heat pipes and a fin stack, usually with one or two PWM fans. Low-profile models suit small cases; dual-tower designs provide substantially more surface area for sustained loads.

Premium air is not merely a budget compromise. Noctua says the NH-D15 G2 can rival many AIOs. Its manufacturer specifications list two 140 mm fans, eight heat pipes, approximately 168 × 150 × 152 mm dimensions with fans, about 1,525 g weight, AM4/AM5 and LGA1851/LGA1700 support, a six-year warranty, and 24.8 dB(A) (19.7 dB(A) with the low-noise adapter). Those are controlled manufacturer figures, not whole-system noise guarantees.

AIO liquid cooling: where it helps

AIOs relocate much of the cooler mass to a radiator. Larger 280, 360, and 420 mm radiators have more area and can run fans more slowly at a given sustained heat load. A 120 mm AIO is not automatically better than a capable tower cooler.

  • Advantages: more thermal headroom for sustained CPU power, less socket-area bulk, and a clean appearance that can include RGB or an LCD.
  • Trade-offs: pump noise, extra fans and cables, radiator-clearance constraints, and additional pump, seal, tubing, and coolant failure modes.

An AIO CPU cooler does not cool the graphics card. GPU liquid cooling normally requires a compatible block and a custom loop, as Corsair notes in its AIO explanation.

Performance: is liquid actually cooler?

A sufficiently large AIO generally has greater capacity during sustained, high-power workloads. The result depends on CPU package power, ambient temperature, mounting pressure, thermal paste, case airflow, radiator placement, and fan curves. Noctua’s comparison guide supports the qualified view that larger liquid systems usually provide more headroom, not that liquid always wins.

Gaming is often bursty or GPU-limited. If an air cooler already keeps the CPU below its thermal or power limit, a lower temperature may not raise frame rates. Compare coolers at the same CPU power and noise target, and consider sustained all-core behavior, time to equilibrium, and GPU temperature—not just one peak-temperature reading.

Noise: fans versus pumps

Air coolers have heatsink fans and the case fans that respond to CPU temperature spikes. AIOs add radiator fans and a pump; some also have controller, USB, or software noise. A large radiator can reduce fan RPM during rendering or other sustained loads, while a premium air cooler may be quieter at idle or light gaming because it has no pump.

Set fan curves to avoid reacting aggressively to every short CPU-temperature jump, and compare noise at an identical workload or cooling result. Manufacturer dB(A) numbers apply to stated test conditions, not your complete PC.

Installation and radiator placement

Air cooler checklist

  1. Verify the exact CPU socket and included mounting hardware.
  2. Install the backplate or brackets.
  3. Apply thermal paste if it is not pre-applied.
  4. Secure the heatsink and attach its fan or fans.
  5. Check RAM, PCIe-slot, and side-panel clearance.
  6. Connect the fan to CPU_FAN (or the board header specified by the manual).

AIO checklist

  1. Verify socket support and install the mounting hardware.
  2. Mount the pump/block without sharply bending the tubes.
  3. Install the radiator and fans with a deliberate intake or exhaust direction.
  4. Connect pump power, fan power, and any USB, SATA, RGB, or controller leads.
  5. Set pump and fan behavior in firmware or the vendor software.
  6. Check temperatures and listen for abnormal rattling or gurgling.

Top mounting is usually the best overall arrangement when supported: warm air exhausts upward and the pump is less likely to become the loop’s highest point. A front radiator can work well, particularly where top clearance is unavailable; tubes-down orientation is generally preferred when tubing length allows. Corsair’s mounting guidance and Noctua’s radiator-placement guide explain why air should collect away from the pump. A front intake may lower CPU temperature but feed warmer air to the GPU; top exhaust often gives a better whole-system compromise.

Compatibility: measure before buying

Air-cooler checks

  • Maximum cooler height and side-panel clearance.
  • RAM height and front-fan adjustment.
  • Clearance around the top PCIe slot and motherboard heatsinks.
  • Heatsink mass if the computer is transported.

The Corsair A115 is approximately 153 × 155 × 164.8 mm and lists AM5/AM4 and LGA1851/LGA1700 support on its official specification page. A case with less than roughly 165 mm of cooler clearance is a poor fit.

AIO checks

  • Radiator length, thickness, and fan thickness.
  • Top clearance above RAM and VRM heatsinks.
  • Front clearance against the graphics card and drive cages.
  • Tube reach and bend radius.
  • Supported radiator sizes: 240, 280, 360, or 420 mm.
  • Available fan, pump, USB, SATA, and RGB headers.

“360 mm support” does not guarantee that a particular radiator-and-fan combination clears the motherboard. Small-form-factor systems may need a low-profile air cooler or a compact AIO; the case layout decides which is practical.

Reliability, maintenance, and troubleshooting

Air cooling

Dust, dried thermal paste, mounting errors, and fan or PWM-cable failure are the usual concerns. If the fan stops, temperatures can rise quickly, but there is no pump or coolant loop. Large heatsinks should be supported and carefully packaged during transport; Corsair discusses transport precautions in its cooling comparison.

AIO cooling

Sealed AIOs normally need little user maintenance, but the pump, fans, seals, tubing, coolant, controller, and software add possible failure points. Pump failure, vibration, air bubbles, gradual coolant permeation, and rare leaks are possible; leaks should not be treated as routine. NZXT lists insufficient capacity, restricted airflow, dust, failed fans, and failed pumps among overheating causes in its support guidance.

When temperatures suddenly rise

  1. Check CPU package power, boost behavior, and ambient temperature.
  2. Inspect mounting pressure, thermal paste, and any protective film on the cold plate.
  3. Confirm pump detection, pump power, fan operation, and radiator airflow.
  4. Check radiator orientation, case intake, exhaust, and dust filters.
  5. Review BIOS power limits or automatic overclocking.

For a suspected pump failure, stop demanding workloads, verify the pump tachometer or software reading, reseat the cable, and replace the cooler if failure is confirmed. Do not repeatedly stress-test a CPU with a nonfunctional pump.

Choose by build type and priority

Priority or build Starting choice Reason
Budget or mainstream gaming Good tower air cooler Strong value and simple installation.
High sustained CPU power 280 or 360 mm AIO More radiator capacity, if the case fits.
Quiet rendering or streaming Large AIO or premium air Outcome depends on pump, fan count, and tuning.
Small-form-factor PC Case-dependent Low-profile air and compact AIOs solve different clearance problems.
Showcase or RGB build AIO with lighting/display Aesthetic features justify cost only if you value them.
Frequent transport Air with proper support No pump, but secure a heavy heatsink for moving or shipping.
CPU and GPU liquid cooling Custom loop Requires blocks, filling, leak testing, draining, and maintenance.

Final verdict

Buy air cooling when value, simplicity, low maintenance, or transportability matters. Select a 240 or 280 mm AIO when sustained CPU power, acoustics, or socket-area appearance justify added complexity. Move to 360 or 420 mm only when the CPU workload and case clearance support it. Choose a custom loop for deliberate CPU-and-GPU cooling or an enthusiast showpiece—not because a normal gaming PC needs one.
