For co-op, check each mod’s requirements and coordinate profiles and versions with your friends.
Choose a mod manager first
The R.E.P.O. Modding Wiki describes Gale, r2modman, and Thunderstore Mod Manager, and recommends Gale or r2modman. It says Gale and r2modman support Windows and Linux, while Thunderstore Mod Manager is Windows-only and requires Overwolf. The available guidance does not establish a universal best manager, comparative performance, or security ranking; check whether your chosen tool supports the mods you want and lets your co-op group share profiles. The steps below use r2modman because its guide documents a specific profile-and-launch workflow. Labels may change as the app is updated. Manual installation is possible, but the wiki discourages it and says its community Discord will not support manual installs.
Install mods with r2modman
- Select the game and profile. In r2modman, search the game list for R.E.P.O., select it, and create a profile or choose one you already use.
- Install BepInEx first. Open the Online tab and install the BepInEx pack. The r2modman guide says other mods will not load without it.
- Add the mods you want. Install each from the Online tab using “Download with dependencies” so required packages are included.
- Launch through r2modman. Choose “Start modded.” Starting R.E.P.O. directly through Steam launches the unmodded game, according to the guide.
- Update deliberately. Check the profile and its mods after a game patch. If you play with friends, share the profile so they can use matching mods and versions.
The broader manager flow is similar: install and open the manager, select R.E.P.O., create or open a profile, install mods, and launch the game through the manager. The R.E.P.O. Make sure co-op mods match your group
Not every mod needs to be installed by every player. The r2modman guide groups multiplayer requirements into three types; check the individual mod description rather than assuming how it works.

Manual installation, if you need it
A Steam Community guide describes a manual method, but it requires you to manage files and updates yourself. The community wiki says manual installation is not recommended and is unsupported in its Discord, so use a manager if you want the documented community-support route.
- Find the R.E.P.O. installation folder in Steam.
- Copy the contents of the BepInEx pack into the game directory.
- Run the game once to generate the BepInEx folders, then close it.
- Place mod DLL files in
BepInEx/plugins. - Manage mod and dependency updates yourself; the Steam Community guide advises backing up saves before making significant changes.

Troubleshoot mods that will not load
Check these likely causes in order before deleting the profile or reinstalling everything:
- Confirm the launch method. Start R.E.P.O. using “Start modded” in r2modman, not the normal Steam launch.
- Check BepInEx. Make sure the BepInEx pack is installed and enabled in the active profile.
- Check dependencies. Verify that a required dependency was installed and has not been disabled.
- Consider recent game updates. A game patch may have arrived before mod updates and broken compatibility.
- Inspect the profile log. Look for an error stack trace that can identify the failing mod or dependency.
If R.E.P.O. is missing from r2modman’s game list, its guide suggests the app may be out of date. Close and reopen r2modman to apply a pending update, check the app’s status line, and, if needed, install the current version over the existing one.
