If the Xbox app does nothing when you click it, hangs on “Launching Xbox,” or opens and closes immediately, work through the fixes below in order. The app relies on Microsoft Store and Gaming Services components, so the problem may extend beyond the Xbox app itself. Start with updates and built-in repair options; save PowerShell package removal for later.
First, save your work and restart Windows. Note whether Microsoft Store opens and record any error code you see. If Store and other Microsoft apps also fail, focus on the Store and Windows steps rather than reinstalling Xbox repeatedly.
1. Restart Windows and install updates
Try this first: a pending update or restart can leave Store apps or their supporting components in an incomplete state. Microsoft recommends checking Windows updates when a Store app is not working.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not explicitly request it.
- Try opening Xbox again.
If the app still will not open, continue to Store updates. Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guide covers updates and repair options.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
2. Update Microsoft Store apps
Try this if Store opens. An outdated Xbox app or Gaming Services package can interfere with launch and sign-in.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library, then Get updates.
- Let available updates install, including Xbox and Gaming Services if listed.
- Restart Windows and test Xbox.
The Library layout can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds. If Store itself will not open or update apps, skip ahead to the Store repair and cache steps.
3. Repair, then reset the Xbox app
Use Repair before Reset. Repair attempts to fix the app without changing its data. Reset clears local app data and settings, so you may need to sign in again; it is not the same as uninstalling every Xbox game, but do not assume every local setting or download state will be preserved.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xbox.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the app, then Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then try launching Xbox.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset. Sign in again if prompted.
Menu labels may vary slightly by Windows build or device policy. Microsoft describes repair and reset as options for problematic Store apps in its Store-app troubleshooting guidance.

4. Repair, then reset Microsoft Store
Prioritize this if Store also fails, cannot update Xbox, or cannot install Gaming Services. Repairing Xbox alone is unlikely to resolve a wider Store problem.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, then select Repair.
- Test Store and Xbox.
- If needed, return to the same screen and select Reset.
5. Clear the Microsoft Store cache
Try this if Store downloads or app updates are stuck. The cache reset is quick, but it does not repair every Store or Xbox dependency.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close. Microsoft says it may remain for about ten seconds before Store opens automatically.
- Restart Windows and test Xbox.
A briefly blank window is expected; avoid closing it prematurely unless it is clearly frozen. See Microsoft’s instructions for resetting the Store cache.
6. Check your account, date and time, region, and network
Use these checks if Xbox opens but sign-in, Game Pass content, or Store downloads do not load. Authentication can fail even when the internet appears to be working.

Confirm the account
- Open Microsoft Store and sign in with the Microsoft account you use with Xbox and Game Pass.
- If Xbox opens but content does not load, sign out and back in to both Store and Xbox.
Sync date and time
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and, where available, Set time zone automatically.
- Select Sync now if shown.
Check region and network
- Under Settings > Time & language > Language & region, confirm Country or region matches your actual location. Changing it to another country is not a general fix and may affect Store availability, purchases, and localized content.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, and test another network if sign-in or downloads fail.
- If local steps work but online Xbox features do not, check Xbox service status; a local repair cannot resolve an account-side problem or service outage.
Account, time, and region checks also appear in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance.
7. Check Xbox and Gaming Services
Try this if Xbox hangs on launch or games will not start even though the app opens. Gaming Services is a dependency for Xbox app installation, sign-in, Game Pass features, and game launching; it is one possible cause, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - If present, check Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Game Save, Xbox Live Networking Service, and Gaming Services.
- If a service is stopped, right-click it and choose Start. If it is running but appears unresponsive, choose Restart.
- Do not disable the services. Restart Windows and test Xbox.
Service names and startup behavior can vary with Windows version and installation state. Confirm that relevant services are present, not disabled, and able to start; there is no need to force every service to run continuously or set every one to Automatic. The service checks are also described in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance.
8. Reinstall Gaming Services
Use this advanced step only after updates, repair/reset, and the cache check have failed. It requires administrator access, and the removal command targets all Windows users on the PC. If the package is missing or registered differently, the command may return no result or an error. The Store link also depends on Store working.

- Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run this command:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
- Restart the PC.
- Open the Gaming Services Store page by running:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
- Install Gaming Services from Microsoft Store, then restart Windows again.
- Try opening Xbox.
This removal-and-reinstall sequence appears in Microsoft Q&A guidance and a separate discussion about Xbox hanging on launch; treat community answers as troubleshooting guidance, not proof that Gaming Services is the cause. Do not delete Gaming Services registry keys as a routine fix.
9. Reinstall the Xbox app
Try this after the less disruptive app and Store repairs. If Store cannot reinstall Xbox, the failure is likely broader than the Xbox package.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, search for the official Xbox app, and install it.
- Restart again if prompted, then launch Xbox and sign in.
Do not use unofficial download sites or third-party “Xbox app fix” utilities. Removing the app is not a guarantee that every game installation, shortcut, mod, or local setting will remain unchanged.

Test for software conflicts with a clean boot
A clean boot can help identify interference from a startup app or background service; it is a diagnostic test, not a permanent setup. Possible conflicts include third-party antivirus or firewall software, VPN clients, game overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities, RGB/peripheral software, and tuning tools. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions, test Xbox, then restore normal startup.

Test another Windows user profile
Try Xbox from another Windows account. If it works there, the original profile may have damaged app data, credentials, or permissions. If it fails in both profiles, system-level Store, AppX, or Gaming Services damage becomes more likely. This comparison is used in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting discussions.
Collect crash details only if needed
- Press Windows key + X and open Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs > Application immediately after trying to launch Xbox.
- Record the faulting application, exception code, and timestamp for Microsoft or Xbox Support.
Do not make registry changes based only on an unexplained Event Viewer entry.
Consider Windows repair only as a last resort
If multiple Store apps fail across user profiles, back up important files and consider an in-place Windows repair upgrade before any more invasive changes. It may repair Windows components while preserving files and apps, but it is substantially more involved than the steps above. A possible Store/AppX corruption escalation is discussed in Microsoft Q&A.
