The message “Rockstar Games Online Services are unavailable right now,” “Please return to Grand Theft Auto V,” or “Please try again later” does not automatically mean Rockstar is down. It can indicate a GTA Online outage, failed Rockstar authentication, a router or NAT conflict, DNS trouble, stale console data, or an outdated PC installation. On PC, Code 134 usually points to GTAV updates or offline license verification.
Start with Rockstar’s official service-status page. If the relevant GTA Online, Authentication, or Rockstar Games Launcher service is down, wait and check again later. If services are operational, work through the least disruptive fixes below.

1. Check Rockstar’s service status
Open the official status page and check your platform separately: GTA Online for PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S, plus Authentication and the Rockstar Games Launcher when applicable.
- If a relevant service is down or under maintenance, close the game and retry after Rockstar updates the page.
- If every relevant service says All services operational, continue with local troubleshooting.
The status page is not a guarantee that every route to Rockstar works. Rockstar’s connection guidance also identifies player-network conflicts that can occur while services appear operational.

2. Restart the game, launcher, and device
This clears a temporary session or authentication failure without changing network settings.
- Fully quit GTA V rather than leaving it suspended.
- On PC, exit the Rockstar Games Launcher completely, including its system-tray process.
- Restart the computer or console.
- On PC, open the Rockstar Games Launcher, sign in, and launch GTAV from the store where it was installed.
- Try GTA Online again.
If the launcher itself cannot sign in, treat that as an authentication, firewall, launcher, or network problem—not proof that GTA Online is down.
3. Test your connection with Ethernet or a hotspot
Check whether the fault follows your home network or your device.

- Run a speed test. Rockstar lists 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload as GTA Online troubleshooting targets; meeting them does not rule out latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, NAT, or poor ISP routing.
- If you use Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection.
- Temporarily connect the console or PC to a mobile hotspot or another internet connection.
- Hotspot works: your home router, ISP, DNS, or NAT is the likely source.
- Every network fails while Rockstar reports an outage: wait for the service to recover.
- Story Mode works but GTA Online does not: the online service or authentication path is failing; Story Mode and GTA Online do not use identical services.
4. Restart the router correctly
Rockstar recommends a roughly 10-minute power cycle in its unavailable-services guidance and platform connection articles.

- Unplug the modem/router or router.
- Leave it disconnected for approximately 10 minutes.
- Reconnect it and wait until internet service returns.
- Restart the game and test GTA Online.
This is a power cycle, not a factory reset. Do not press the router’s reset button or erase its configuration. If the problem repeatedly returns, look for double NAT, outdated router firmware, parental controls, an ISP outage, or multiple routers connected in series.
5. Clear the relevant console cache
Xbox Series X|S
- Turn off the console and unplug it.
- Wait two minutes, reconnect power, and start the console.
- To clear the alternate MAC address, open Xbox button > Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > Alternate MAC Address > Clear, then restart if prompted.

Xbox One
- Hold the console power button until it shuts down.
- Disconnect the power brick for at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect it, turn on the console, and start GTA V.

PlayStation 5
- Turn off the PS5.
- Hold the power button until the second beep, approximately seven seconds.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear Cache.
Follow Rockstar’s PS5 guide. For PS4, use the separate PS4 troubleshooting procedure; its menus are not identical to PS5.
6. Check NAT and router conflicts
A more-open NAT generally creates fewer conflicts with other players, but open NAT is not a universal requirement. First check the platform’s reported type.

Xbox
Go to Xbox button > Settings > General > Network Settings and choose Test NAT Type if necessary. Rockstar defines Open as compatible with any NAT type, Moderate as compatible with Open or Moderate, and Strict as compatible only with Open.

PlayStation 5
Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Rockstar describes Type 1 as a direct connection, Type 2 as a router connection that generally works with Type 1 or Type 2, and Type 3 as restricted to open systems.
Safer router changes
- Enable UPnP if your router supports it.
- Remove conflicting manual port forwards.
- Avoid two routers in series unless the upstream device is in bridge mode.
- If forwarding is unavoidable, reserve a local IP address for the console or PC first.
- Forward only required ports; do not place the device in a DMZ or disable the router firewall as a default fix.
Rockstar lists GTA Online UDP ports 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458. Platform-network ports are separate: Xbox uses UDP 88, 3544, 500, 4500, UDP/TCP 53, and TCP 80; PlayStation uses TCP 80, 443, 3480, and UDP/TCP 3478, 3479. These values come from Rockstar’s Xbox and PlayStation guides.
7. Change DNS temporarily
Changing DNS can test whether your ISP resolver is failing to resolve Rockstar services. It is not a universal latency fix and may interfere with provider-managed DNS, parental controls, enterprise filtering, or captive portals. Record your original settings so you can restore them.

Windows
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Change adapter options.
- Right-click the active adapter and select Properties.
- Open Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties.
- Select Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the IPv4 values.
- Configure IPv6 only if required, save, and restart the game.

Xbox Series X|S
Open Xbox button > Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > DNS Settings > Manual, then enter the values and test GTA Online.
PS5
Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select your Wi-Fi or LAN connection, choose Options > Advanced Settings, and use:
- IP Address Settings: Automatic
- DHCP Host: Don’t Specify
- DNS Settings: Manual
- Primary DNS:
8.8.8.8 - Proxy Server: Don’t Use
- MTU Settings: Automatic
The captured Rockstar PS5 instructions do not state a secondary DNS value, so do not invent one. If DNS changes do not help, restore the previous automatic or recorded settings.
8. Update or verify the PC installation
Use this step for PC-only failures, especially “The Rockstar Game Services are unavailable and offline play could not be verified (code 134).” Rockstar says Code 134 can occur when GTAV is not current.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Grand Theft Auto V under My installed games.
- Select Verify Integrity beside the game-file verification option.
- Wait for completion and relaunch GTAV.
Steam
- Open Steam and right-click Grand Theft Auto V.
- Select Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Relaunch GTAV when Steam finishes.
Epic Games Launcher
If verification or updating does not resolve Code 134, Rockstar documents reinstalling through Epic: open Library, select the three dots beside GTAV, choose Uninstall, remove leftover files if Rockstar instructs you to, restart Epic Games Launcher, and reinstall. Reinstallation should be last because it consumes substantial time and bandwidth and cannot fix an outage, strict NAT, or ISP-routing fault.

Platform quick reference
- PC: restart the launcher, check firewall permissions without permanently disabling protection, test DNS, and verify files. Code 134 makes updating and verification especially important.
- PS5: clear system cache, test NAT, and use the PS5-specific DNS path.
- PS4: follow Rockstar’s dedicated PS4 guide rather than copying PS5 menus.
- Xbox Series X|S: use the two-minute power reset, clear Alternate MAC Address, then test NAT and DNS.
- Xbox One: disconnect the power brick for at least 30 seconds, then check network settings.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset the router when a normal power cycle is all that is needed.
- Do not put a console or PC in a DMZ as a first-line fix.
- Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall or antivirus. If security software is suspected, pause it only for diagnosis, re-enable it immediately, and create a narrow application exception.
- Do not assume a VPN fixes the problem; it can add latency, NAT complications, and authentication checks.
- Do not reinstall GTAV before checking status, the network, and file verification.
When nothing works
- Recheck Rockstar status later; an operational reading can change.
- Test a different network and note whether a hotspot works.
- Restore DNS or router settings you changed.
- Confirm the correct Rockstar account is linked and that the platform account can use online multiplayer.
- Submit a request through Rockstar Support with your platform, exact error text or code, launcher/store, service-status result, network tests, and whether a hotspot worked.
The Bottom Line
Check Rockstar’s status before changing anything. If services are up, restart the client and device, isolate the network with Ethernet or a hotspot, then address cache, NAT, DNS, and PC file verification in that order. Reinstall only after those checks fail.
