The Best VR Headsets for 2023: Quest 3, PSVR2 and More

Quest 3 leads as the best all-round VR headset for late 2023, but PS5 owners, budget buyers and PC-VR enthusiasts have better-fitting alternatives.

For most buyers shopping at the end of 2023, Meta Quest 3 is the best all-round VR headset: it works without a PC or console, can connect to a gaming PC, and adds sharper pancake optics and color mixed-reality passthrough. Quest 2 is the lower-cost entry point; PlayStation VR2 is the clear pick for PS5 owners; and PC specialists may prefer Valve Index or Vive Pro 2 for their particular strengths. There is no universal winner: your platform and the games you want matter more than a spec-sheet ranking.

Quick recommendations

Headset Best for Platform 2023 US price reference Main strength Main drawback
Meta Quest 3 Best overall Standalone; optional PC VR $499.99 for 128GB; $649.99 for 512GB at October 10, 2023 launch Pancake optics, newer processor, color passthrough, broad Quest library Battery life and basic included strap
Meta Quest 2 Cheapest good entry point Standalone; optional PC VR $299.99 for 128GB after Meta’s June 2023 US price reduction Established standalone catalog at a lower price Older processor, Fresnel lenses, less capable passthrough
PlayStation VR2 PS5 owners PS5-tethered $549.99 US launch price on February 22, 2023 OLED HDR, eye tracking, haptics and PS5 games Requires a PS5; smaller library than Quest
Valve Index PC-VR enthusiasts who prioritize controllers and tracking Gaming PC and SteamVR base stations Current 2023 price not established here Index controllers, Lighthouse tracking, audio and high refresh-rate options Costly setup and older display and optics
HTC Vive Pro 2 PC users prioritizing panel resolution Gaming PC and SteamVR tracking hardware Current 2023 price not established here High-resolution display Expensive complete setup; weight and dated controller design
Pico 4 Comfort-focused standalone buyers in supported markets Standalone; PC VR support varies Not stated in the cited 2023 sources Pancake lenses and balanced rear-battery design Regional availability and software access vary
Meta Quest Pro Productivity and social-VR specialists Standalone; optional PC VR Approximately $1,000 in 2023 coverage after reduction from its $1,500 launch price Eye and face tracking, color passthrough, pancake optics Poor gaming value beside Quest 3

Quest 3’s US launch prices and features were announced by Meta; the Quest 2 reduction was announced in June 2023. Sony’s PSVR2 launch announcement gives its US launch price and date. These are historical 2023 figures, not current prices.

Choose by platform first

  1. You own a PS5 and want console VR: Start with PSVR2, then check whether its games include the experiences you want.
  2. You want VR without buying a console or PC: Choose Quest 3 for the stronger late-2023 hardware, or Quest 2 if the price difference is substantial. Consider Pico 4 only if it is supported where you live.
  3. You already have a powerful gaming PC: Choose Valve Index if its controllers and Lighthouse tracking are priorities; consider Vive Pro 2 if display resolution matters more.
  4. You want a headset for work or social presence rather than gaming value: Quest Pro’s eye and face tracking may be relevant, but it is not the sensible default gaming purchase.

Standalone headsets run software on the headset itself. Quest devices and Pico 4 can also stream PC VR, but that requires a compatible PC and a wired Link connection or wireless streaming setup. Wireless results depend on Wi-Fi quality and congestion; a cable can provide more consistent latency. Index and Vive Pro 2 need a capable PC and external SteamVR tracking equipment. PSVR2’s normal console experience requires a PS5.

Why Quest 3 is the best overall choice for late 2023

Quest 3 is the most flexible recommendation because it is not tied to a console or PC. It launched on October 10, 2023, with 128GB and 512GB US models. Meta lists a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, pancake lenses, full-color passthrough and 2,064 × 2,208 pixels per eye; its launch specifications also cite refresh rates up to 120Hz. Meta claimed nearly 30% higher resolution and roughly double the graphics performance of Quest 2; those performance comparisons are Meta’s claims, not a universal independent benchmark. Quest 3 is compatible with the Quest 2 catalog. See Meta’s Quest 3 announcement.

#1 Best Overall

  • CARDBOARD MONKENAUT — Get our best Gorilla Tag bundle yet with this Amazon exclusive deal. Purchase Meta Quest 3 to get exclusive items, including the Gorilla Space Program Suit and Helmet, plus 2,000 SHINY ROCKS.
  • NEARLY 30% LEAP IN RESOLUTION — Experience every thrill in breathtaking detail with sharp graphics and stunning 4K+ Infinite Display.
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play and explore in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

The pancake optics make the headset slimmer than a design built around Fresnel lenses and offer a wider clear viewing area. Color passthrough supports mixed-reality experiences, though that does not turn the headset into a substitute for a PC or console. Quest 3 can also access PC-VR games through a suitable wired or wireless setup.

Who should buy it—and who should skip it

  • Buy it if you want one headset for standalone games, mixed reality and optional PC VR, and can afford the higher entry price.
  • Skip it if you specifically want PS5 exclusives and already own a PS5, or if you need Lighthouse tracking and Index-style controllers.
  • Plan for a basic fabric strap and limited battery life; users wanting longer sessions may want a better strap or battery solution.

Quest 2 remains a budget pick, not the default

Meta reduced the US price of the 128GB Quest 2 to $299.99 in June 2023. It offers standalone operation, hand tracking, optional PC-VR use and a mature software catalog, but uses older Fresnel optics and a less powerful processor than Quest 3. The front-heavy fit and basic strap are also common comfort compromises. Meta’s price announcement is at its June 2023 update; comparison coverage includes Wareable’s 2023 headset guide.

When the lower price makes sense

Quest 2 is a reasonable first headset when it costs substantially less than Quest 3, particularly as a discounted or carefully checked used purchase. If the prices are close, Quest 3’s newer processor, optics and mixed-reality features make it the better long-term choice. For used units, inspect lenses for scratches, test controller drift, check battery health and facial-interface condition, and confirm warranty and replacement-part options.

  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.

PSVR2 is the right choice for the right PS5 owner

PSVR2 launched globally on February 22, 2023, at a US launch price of $549.99 for the headset and Sense controllers. It needs a PS5 for its normal VR gaming experience. Two OLED displays deliver 2,000 × 2,040 pixels per eye, HDR and refresh rates up to 120Hz. Eye tracking, headset feedback, controller haptics and adaptive triggers give it features that Quest 3 does not replicate in the same way. Sony’s details are on its PSVR2 product page and in its launch announcement.

Its strongest case is a PS5 owner who wants games such as Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Resident Evil Village or No Man’s Sky. Check the PlayStation VR2 game catalog for the titles you actually plan to play. The catalog is smaller than Meta’s standalone library, and PSVR2 is not a standalone wireless headset. Its halo-style headband suits some faces better than others, so fit and facial pressure still matter.

PC-VR specialists: Index for interaction, Vive Pro 2 for resolution

Valve Index: controllers and tracking first

Index remains compelling for enthusiasts who value its finger-sensing controllers, Lighthouse tracking, off-ear audio, wide field of view and high refresh-rate options. It requires a gaming PC and external SteamVR base stations, so the total setup is more demanding than buying a standalone headset. Its Fresnel lenses and lower-resolution display are older than newer alternatives. Road to VR discusses it in its 2023 buying guide. Choose Index for its interaction and tracking ecosystem, not as the automatic answer for image quality or value.

  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play, exercise and explore immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the SnapdragonTM XR2 Gen 2 processor.

  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

HTC Vive Pro 2: display resolution first

Vive Pro 2 is a premium PC-VR option for people who prioritize its high-resolution panel and are willing to build around SteamVR tracking. A complete setup needs a gaming PC and tracking hardware; a headset-only package may not contain everything necessary. Contemporary guides note its weight, comfort concerns and dated controllers. See HTC’s Vive Pro 2 overview and Tech Advisor’s headset comparison. It makes most sense for users already invested in compatible SteamVR gear.

Pico 4 and Quest Pro fill narrower roles

Pico 4: balanced fit where officially supported

Pico 4 is a standalone alternative released globally in October 2022. Pancake lenses, high-resolution displays and a battery mounted at the rear help balance its weight, making it attractive to comfort-focused users. Its software catalog, store access, accessories and support are less consistent across countries than Meta’s. Verify local availability and software access before buying; coverage includes UploadVR’s headset guide and Wareable’s guide.

Quest Pro: specialized features, weak gaming value

Quest Pro adds color passthrough, eye and face tracking, pancake optics and a work-oriented design. 2023 coverage placed it at approximately $1,000 after a reduction from its $1,500 launch price; that is a historical reported price, not a current offer. Its specialized features may suit professional visualization, mixed-reality work or social presence, but Quest 3 is the better gaming-value choice for most buyers. See UploadVR’s guide.

Quest 3 versus PSVR2: flexibility or console immersion?

Choose Quest 3 if… Choose PSVR2 if…
You want standalone play, wireless use, color mixed reality and optional PC-VR streaming. You own a PS5 and want games designed for Sony’s console headset.
You value a broader general-purpose standalone software ecosystem. You prioritize OLED contrast, HDR, eye tracking, headset rumble and adaptive triggers.
You do not want a headset that depends on a console. You are comfortable with PS5 dependence and a smaller, console-focused catalog.

Neither display is simply “better.” PSVR2’s OLED panels can deliver stronger blacks and contrast in supported games; Quest 3’s pancake optics, resolution and standalone versatility are compelling in other ways. The choice is driven by platform and preferred games as much as visual specification.

What specs do—and do not—tell you

Lenses and usable clarity

Quest 3, Quest Pro and Pico 4 use pancake lenses; Quest 2, PSVR2, Index and Vive Pro 2 use Fresnel lenses. Pancake designs generally provide a larger clear area, making it easier to look around with your eyes without constantly shifting the headset. Fresnel lenses can still look good, but are more position-sensitive and may show glare or “god rays.” Resolution alone cannot predict sharpness: lens design, pixels per degree, display persistence, binocular overlap and fit all affect what you see.

LCD, OLED and refresh rate

Quest 3 uses LCD; PSVR2 uses OLED with HDR. OLED favors black levels and contrast, while LCD and pancake combinations can provide a clear view with fewer persistence artifacts. Higher refresh rates and stable frame delivery can improve comfort, but neither guarantees freedom from motion sickness. Begin with stationary experiences, short sessions, teleport movement and snap turning if you are prone to discomfort.

  • Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers translate instinctive hand gestures and detailed finger actions directly into VR with self-tracking cameras and precision controls. Multi-point, advanced haptics make virtual interactions feel entirely real

Inside-out versus Lighthouse tracking

Quest 3, Quest 2, PSVR2 and Pico 4 use cameras on the headset for inside-out tracking, avoiding the installation of external sensors. Index and Vive Pro 2 rely on SteamVR Lighthouse base stations in a complete tracking setup. External stations require more setup but can provide highly reliable tracking across a large play area. Controller quality is a separate buying criterion from display quality: PSVR2’s Sense controllers add adaptive triggers and haptics, while Index controllers remain notable for finger sensing and grip tracking.

Budget for the whole setup, not just the headset

  • Quest: Consider a more comfortable strap or battery strap, enough storage for your library, a suitable USB-C cable for wired PC VR, or reliable Wi-Fi for wireless streaming. Prescription inserts or a glasses spacer may be needed.
  • PSVR2: The headset requires a PS5; include the console if you do not already own one, plus the games you intend to buy.
  • Index or Vive Pro 2: Include a capable gaming PC and compatible SteamVR tracking equipment; confirm exactly which controllers and base stations are in the package.
  • Any headset: Check glasses clearance, facial-interface options, replacement-part availability and whether the retailer’s return policy gives you a practical way to assess fit.

Headset weight alone does not determine comfort. Balance, strap shape, facial pressure, heat, glasses clearance and the size of the lens sweet spot all matter. Quest 2’s front-heavy design often prompts strap upgrades; Quest 3 is slimmer but still includes a basic strap; Pico 4’s rear battery improves balance for some users. PSVR2’s halo-style fit is personal. A larger storage tier is most useful if you expect to keep many large standalone games installed.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm whether the headset is standalone, PS5-tethered or PC-dependent, and whether your existing hardware meets the requirement.
  • Check your intended games on the correct storefront; cross-platform games may differ in graphics, features or save support.
  • Measure your interpupillary distance (IPD) and verify the headset’s adjustment range. A poor fit can cause blur, eye strain or discomfort.
  • Check glasses fit or prescription insert compatibility for the exact headset.
  • Confirm storage size, included controllers, cables, power adapter and—on PC systems—base stations.
  • Check local availability, warranty and return terms, especially for Pico 4 or used and older hardware.
  • For motion sensitivity, start with short sessions and comfort options rather than assuming any headset will prevent nausea.
