Choose SteamOS for a Steam-first handheld with console-like controls, integrated Steam Input and simpler suspend/resume. Choose Windows 11 when PC Game Pass, restrictive anti-cheat, several launchers, mods, specialist software or broad peripheral support matters more. Neither operating system is universally faster: results depend on the device, drivers, power limit, game and settings.

What SteamOS actually provides
SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based operating system built around Steam. On Steam Deck, Steam Game Mode is the primary controller-friendly interface; Desktop Mode uses KDE Plasma for conventional Linux applications. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer runs many Windows games by using their existing executable and data on Linux-based Steam hardware: Steamworks Proton documentation.
Steam Input, per-game control profiles, a unified library, shader-cache management and suspend/resume make supported handhelds feel closer to a console than a traditional PC. Desktop applications can be installed through Linux packages and Flatpak, but troubleshooting sometimes requires Linux-specific paths, permissions or compatibility tools.
What Windows 11 changes
Windows 11 is a general-purpose desktop operating system used by most gaming-PC manufacturers. It runs Windows games natively, supports the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, and offers the broadest access to launchers, mods, hardware utilities, VR software and unusual peripherals. Microsoft is adding controller-oriented experiences for PCs and handhelds through its Xbox ecosystem: Xbox on PC and handheld compatibility.

- POWER-UP AND GO – When it comes to gaming on the go, battery life is everything. The Lenovo Legion Go S is built with a robust 55.5Whr battery that delivers the long-lasting power you need for extended play sessions.
- TAKE FULL CONTROL – Get ready to dominate with the ergonomic Legion TrueStrike Controllers, designed for all-day comfort and precision. With their anti-slip texture, you’ll stay in control during even the most intense battles.
That does not make Windows inherently poor on handhelds. It does mean that the underlying desktop, updates, pop-ups, launchers and vendor control centers can still require touchscreen, keyboard or mouse interaction. A fullscreen launcher improves the front end; it does not create SteamOS’s system-level integration.
Game compatibility and anti-cheat
SteamOS ratings are useful, not guarantees
Valve’s Deck Verified program labels games Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown: Deck Verified information. Verified means Valve’s checks found the game suitable under its criteria, not that it delivers maximum frame rate or perfect handheld ergonomics. Playable games may involve small text, manual keyboard entry, launcher friction, a particular Proton version, codec issues or occasional instability. Valve notes that an Unsupported rating can result from Proton or hardware incompatibility: compatibility criteria.
Check the store rating, current ProtonDB reports and the publisher’s Linux or anti-cheat statements for the exact game and device. Compatibility changes with patches, Proton releases and anti-cheat configuration, so a single percentage for “working Steam games” is misleading.
Anti-cheat can be a purchase veto
Some Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye configurations work through Proton when the developer enables Linux support. Others do not. Restrictive kernel-level anti-cheat may allow a game to launch on Windows but block matchmaking or fail entirely on SteamOS, sometimes after an update. Valve cannot universally enable support that the developer and anti-cheat vendor have not provided. If competitive multiplayer is your main use, Windows 11 is the safer choice unless the publisher explicitly supports Proton.

Steam, Game Pass and other stores
PC Game Pass
Native local PC Game Pass installation is a Windows advantage: Microsoft’s service requires the Xbox app and Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher. SteamOS has no equivalent native Xbox PC application, and Microsoft Store licensing and runtimes complicate unofficial workarounds. Browser-based Xbox Cloud Gaming may be possible on SteamOS, but it depends on subscription, network quality, browser support and controller behavior; streaming is not the same as local installation.
Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft and Battle.net
Windows is the uncomplicated option. On SteamOS, Heroic Games Launcher, Lutris, Bottles, Wine/Proton variants and non-Steam shortcuts can provide access. They may require separate prefixes, authentication fixes, launch options or controller mapping, and cloud saves, DRM, overlays and anti-cheat can still fail. These tools expand SteamOS’s reach but do not make it equivalent to native Windows support.
Which feels better on a handheld?
SteamOS advantages
- Boots directly into a controller-oriented Steam interface.
- Centralizes library, downloads, updates, Steam Input and per-game settings.
- Usually minimizes desktop interaction during a gaming session.
- Offers a coherent suspend/resume workflow on supported hardware.
Windows 11 trade-offs
- Multiple stores fragment libraries and may require separate launchers.
- On-screen keyboard, touchscreen and mouse use are more common.
- Windows, driver and vendor-utility updates can interrupt a session.
- Background processes and inconsistent control centers can affect battery and usability.
Windows is improving its handheld front end, but SteamOS remains the more appliance-like experience when your games already live in Steam.
Performance, battery life and thermals
Do not treat either OS as categorically faster or more efficient. SteamOS can avoid some conventional desktop overhead and offers a coherent gaming-focused power workflow. Windows benefits from mature vendor drivers, game-specific optimizations and manufacturer utilities that may expose power, fan or display controls unavailable on SteamOS.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

A fair comparison must hold constant the device, game build, drivers, TDP, resolution, graphics settings, upscaler, frame-rate cap, refresh rate, brightness, connectivity and background state. Measure average frame rate, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, battery drain, fan noise, surface temperature, launch time, shader stutter and resume reliability. Without such controlled testing, use qualitative claims only.
Hardware and support boundaries
SteamOS is strongest on officially supported AMD handheld hardware. Basic booting does not prove that gyro, RGB, speakers, fingerprint readers, detachable controllers, fan curves, docks, variable refresh, external GPUs or vendor performance controls will work completely or receive timely updates. Windows generally has the wider driver ecosystem because manufacturers develop Windows utilities first.
Valve’s support page distinguishes its expanding hardware effort from universal compatibility. Before replacing an existing OS, identify whether the device is official, an example installation, community-supported or unverified, and keep the manufacturer recovery image.
Desktop use, mods and emulation
Productivity and specialist software
Windows is the safer fit for Microsoft Office and enterprise software, Adobe applications, school or workplace requirements, VR, game-development tools and proprietary peripheral utilities. SteamOS handles browsing, media, Linux applications, streaming and lightweight productivity, but it is not a drop-in Windows replacement for every workload.

Modding
Windows is usually easier for mod managers, script extenders, DLL-based modifications, patchers, trainers and Windows-only utilities. SteamOS can be modded through Desktop Mode, Proton prefixes, launch options and community instructions, but paths and permissions are less consistent.
Emulation
Both systems support emulators. SteamOS can provide an appliance-like setup through EmuDeck; Windows may be preferable for certain Windows-only utilities and accessories. Emulators are distinct from obtaining copyrighted game files unlawfully.

SteamOS on a Windows handheld
Valve now identifies additional official SteamOS hardware, including Lenovo Legion Go S, while providing example instructions for devices such as the original Legion Go and ROG Ally. On unsupported hardware, buttons, sensors, speakers, RGB, docks or performance controls may need extra work. Back up saves and personal files and retain the manufacturer recovery image before changing partitions.

Dual boot
Dual boot makes sense only when you have a specific reason for both systems and can recover a bootloader or partition. It can duplicate downloads, shader caches and updates, consume storage, separate launcher environments and complicate controller or driver troubleshooting. For most users, one primary OS is simpler.

Exact menu paths change with the device and OS build, so use the current manufacturer documentation for recovery instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SteamOS play every Steam game?
No. Native Linux support and Proton cover many games, but ratings vary by title and can change with updates. Check Deck Verified, ProtonDB and current anti-cheat information for the exact game.
Can SteamOS run PC Game Pass locally?
Native PC Game Pass installation is officially supported on Windows through the Xbox app. SteamOS may access cloud streaming in suitable conditions, but that is not equivalent to local installation.
Is Windows 11 faster on a Steam Deck?
There is no universal winner. Performance and battery depend on drivers, power limits, game version, settings, background activity and the specific test.
Can I install SteamOS on an ROG Ally?
Valve provides example installation guidance for some third-party devices, but unsupported hardware may lack complete controls, sensors, audio, RGB or power-management support. Check Valve’s current support page and keep the ASUS recovery image.
Is SteamOS suitable for a desktop PC?
It can suit a Steam-focused living-room or gaming desktop, but Windows remains more convenient for broad launchers, productivity software, VR, mods, anti-cheat and peripherals. A conventional Linux distribution may be a better desktop fit for some users.
