Google Play Games’ version 3.7-era rollout brought Gamer IDs and automatic sign-in to more users, following Google announcements in January and February. The APK mentioned at the time is a historical release, not a sensible installation recommendation in 2026.
What Google announced in 2016
The changes came in stages, rather than appearing for the first time with the April APK story. On January 23, 2016, Google described a revised Play Games sign-in model: a player would sign in once per Google account, and future compatible games could sign the player in automatically. Automatic sign-in could be turned off. Google also said the new model would reduce the need to upgrade to or rely on a Google+ identity for Play Games. It was an evolution of Play Games’ existing sign-in service, not an entirely new account system. Google’s developer announcement explains the change.

On February 18, Google announced Gamer IDs: a distinct gaming identity intended for Play Games, with a name and optional avatar. Players could set privacy choices, including whether activity was public and whether other players could associate the gaming identity with their real name or email. The aim was to give players a recognizable identity across compatible Play Games experiences without making a Google+ identity the basis for it. Google’s announcement describes the profile and privacy options.
What version 3.7 added—and what the APK numbers mean
Tech Times reported on April 16, 2016 that Google Play Games v3.7 was enabling Gamer IDs and automatic sign-in for users who had not yet received the features through the ordinary rollout. “Finally turns on” described the delayed expansion of previously announced features, not a new feature invented that day. The report did not establish that every user worldwide received the change simultaneously, or that installing an APK by itself guaranteed account conversion. Availability could depend on rollout timing and the user’s account. The original report is dated April 16, 2016.

The broad version label in that story was v3.7. APKMirror’s archive lists Google Play Games 3.7.20 as uploaded April 13, 2016; a later 3.7-series listing, 3.7.24, has release notes explicitly identifying Gamer IDs and automatic sign-in. These are historical package records, not evidence that either build is appropriate for a current Android device. See the APKMirror upload archive and its 3.7.24 release page.
How the original Gamer ID setup worked
The 2016 setup could appear when a user opened Play Games or entered a compatible game. The exact screen and timing varied: a new user, someone migrating an existing profile, or someone changing a private profile to public might see different prompts. The contemporaneous report described a flow like this:

The report also described controls such as switching a profile from private to public or using an edit/pencil control on the profile page. Those are historical interface details, not instructions for the present-day app.
What automatic sign-in did—and did not—do
Automatic sign-in was for games that integrated Google Play Games sign-in. It did not mean every Android game would sign the player in, eliminate every consent or permission prompt, or replace a game’s own account system. Google’s 2016 announcement concerned a less repetitive Play Games sign-in experience; it did not promise that Play Games or Google Play services would require no permissions or handle no account data.

Even in a supported game, the account selected for Play Games matters. Current Google guidance notes that automatic sign-in is not supported by every game, including some games used with supervised accounts. Multiple Google Accounts, disabled automatic sign-in, outdated or malfunctioning Play Games components, or a separate developer login can also affect what happens. Google’s current help covers Play Games and supervised accounts and account and sign-in preferences.
Changing profiles is more consequential than changing a display name: a different Play Games profile may load different progress or settings. Google says switching back to the prior profile may restore its previous game state, but players should confirm which account holds their progress before changing accounts. See Google’s instructions for switching Play Games profiles.

Should you install the old APK now?
No, not for ordinary use. The APK in the 2016 headline referred to sideloading a then-current release before the usual Google Play update had reached every device. The article does not establish that the file was distributed through Google’s own public download infrastructure. A decade-old package may fail to install or authenticate, may not work with current Play services, and carries the general risks of installing software from outside Google Play. A mirror’s listing is useful as an archival record; it is not a guarantee of suitability or safety on a modern phone.
For a current installation, use Google Play rather than version 3.7.20 or 3.7.24. Treat those builds as historical artifacts, not a way to activate a current profile or restore the 2016 interface.

Where to manage the current Play Games profile
Google’s current terminology is generally “Play Games profile,” “gamer name,” and “profile image,” rather than the 2016 rollout label “Gamer ID.” Google documents this Android path for editing a profile:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap the profile icon, then Settings.
- Tap General, then Play Games profile.
- Edit the gamer name or profile image.
To manage which account Play Games uses, Google documents Settings → Google → All services → Settings for Google apps → Play Games → Sign in account. The available choices include changing the default account for games or setting an account for an individual game. Menu labels can vary with Android version and device. See Google Play Help on creating or changing a Play Games profile and Google’s account sign-in guidance.
