How the Connections game works

The New York Times Help Center explains: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” The four categories are color-coded: yellow is intended to be easiest, followed by green, blue and purple, the trickiest. Words can appear to fit more than one possible category, but each puzzle has one intended solution.

Playing the puzzle and using the archive

Connections is available through the NYT Games website and listed NYT apps. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s local timezone. The official Help Center says the archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers; archive games count toward statistics but do not change streaks. NYT can change access terms or app availability, so check the current Help Center listing if a feature is missing.

Eligible subscribers can use Connections Bot for personalized statistics such as difficulty ratings, category performance, mistakes and guess-by-guess details. The community Connections Companion forum also publishes hints and difficulty information, but NYT warns that comments may contain spoilers.
