The optional feature remains available: it lets you sign in with a device or credential manager instead of entering your PlayStation password. Passkeys can reduce phishing and password-reuse risks, but plan for recovery and note that Sony says Password at Checkout is incompatible with passkey-enabled accounts.
What a PlayStation passkey is
A passkey is a cryptographic sign-in credential, not a saved copy of your password. The device or credential manager keeps the private credential; Sony uses corresponding public-key information to verify sign-in. You approve the request locally with a fingerprint, face scan, device PIN, or another screen-unlock method. Sony says the PlayStation feature is based on FIDO standards and can be used with the same Sony account used for other Sony services.
Unlike password autofill, a passkey is designed for a specific service, so it cannot simply be reused on a convincing fake Sony sign-in page. The FIDO Alliance explains how passkeys work and how they may be stored by operating-system credential managers, browsers, or third-party password managers: FIDO Alliance: Passkeys. Sony’s announcement is dated February 26, 2024: Sony Interactive Entertainment’s announcement.
Why use one—and what it does not protect against
For phishing and password reuse, a passkey is generally a stronger option than a password: there is no PlayStation password to guess, reuse elsewhere, or type into a lookalike site. Sony describes passkeys as phishing-resistant; that does not make an account invulnerable. Someone with control of an unlocked device or its credential-manager account may be able to approve sign-ins, and malware, recovery-account abuse, or social engineering remain risks. Protect the phone, computer, PIN, and Apple, Google, Microsoft, or password-manager account where the passkey is stored.

Sony has also reported a 24% reduction in web sign-in time after introducing passkeys. That is Sony’s result; its public statement does not provide the full methodology, sample size, or test conditions, so it should not be treated as an independently verified performance guarantee: Sony’s PlayStation Store experience update.
Passkeys, passwords, and two-step verification
A passkey is principally an alternative to password-based sign-in, not simply another name for two-step verification. Password plus an SMS or authenticator code is a password login with an added verification step. With a passkey, a cryptographic credential is approved locally instead of entering the password. Sony lists Passkey and 2-Step Verification separately in its account security information: Sony account security. Check the options shown for your account rather than assuming every password-based security setting behaves identically after passkey setup.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Compatible devices and where the passkey is stored
Sony supports passkey setup from PS5, PS4, computers, and mobile devices. Its account help says most devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later are supported, and recommends current versions of Safari, Chrome, and Edge for browser sign-in. These are Sony’s compatibility guidelines, not a guarantee that every device or cross-platform combination will behave the same way. See PlayStation passkey information and Sony’s passkey setup help.
Sony recommends iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password, and Dashlane as passkey providers. The passkey is available across devices only if the provider makes it available there—for example, through a synced credential manager. If it is stored only on one phone or computer, do not assume another device can use it. Sony notes that some Android-to-Windows sign-ins and some hardware security keys may encounter issues.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
You do not need to buy a password manager just to create a PlayStation passkey. A built-in provider may be enough if it suits your devices. A third-party manager can make sense if you already use one or want broader password storage and syncing; Sony names 1Password and Dashlane, while Bitwarden is another option to consider. Choose based on your wider needs, not just this one account.
How to create a PlayStation passkey
- Open Sony or PlayStation Account Management and sign in.
- Open Security.
- Select Sign in with Passkey, then Create a Passkey. If your account shows the multi-passkey controls, go to Manage Passkeys and choose Create a Passkey.
- Choose Create on This Device or Create on Another Device if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Approve creation using the device’s biometric check, PIN, or screen lock. Check for Sony’s confirmation email.
- Test a sign-in while you still have access to your existing recovery methods. If you use multiple devices, consider adding a second passkey before relying on the first one.
The exact prompt varies with the device and credential manager. Sony’s full instructions are at Sony account passkey help.

How sign-in works after setup
Start signing in on a PlayStation or Sony login page and choose the passkey option when it appears. A same-device sign-in usually asks for a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN. If the passkey is on another device, the service may offer a QR code or nearby-device flow; a synced credential manager may instead present its own approval prompt. On mobile, Sony recommends using the default camera app to activate and sign in with a passkey. Some Android phones may need a QR-scanner app for certain passkeys.

Purchase prompts and shared consoles
Sony says Password at Checkout is not compatible with accounts that have passkeys set up. If you rely on that password prompt to deter purchases by someone using an already signed-in console, review other controls before changing authentication. Console passcodes, family-management controls, purchase and privacy settings, and limiting automatic payment methods may help, but a console passcode is a separate control—not a guaranteed one-for-one replacement. Sony’s security guidance is at PlayStation account security best practices.

A passkey belongs to an account, not to everyone who uses a console. Do not share the phone, device PIN, or credential-manager account that approves it. Sony also advises against signing in on public or shared devices.
Lost devices and cross-platform use
Before replacing or wiping a phone, make sure you can access the account that syncs its passkeys. Where possible, add another passkey first. Sony specifically warns that some Android-to-Windows combinations may have trouble, and that some hardware security keys may not work as expected; do not make an untested hardware key your only way in.
Add, remove, or replace a passkey
Sony allows multiple passkeys. To add one, sign in to Account Management, open Security, select Manage Passkeys, then choose Create a Passkey. To remove one, open the same page and select Remove beside the credential. Before removing a passkey, verify that another passkey or a password-based recovery route works. Sony’s instructions: Manage passkeys and Remove a passkey.
Troubleshoot a passkey sign-in
- The passkey is not found: Check that you are using the right device and the Apple, Google, or password-manager account where the passkey was saved. Make sure the credential manager is available and the browser and operating system are current.
- A cross-device prompt fails: Try the device that stores the passkey directly. For a mobile QR flow, use the phone’s default camera; Sony notes that certain Android passkeys may require a QR-scanner app. Some Android-to-Windows combinations can have issues.
- A hardware key does not work: Sony says some hardware security keys may encounter problems. If possible, use a synced mobile-device passkey and keep a fallback route.
- You need another way in: From the sign-in screen, select Can’t Sign In with Passkey and use email or QR fallback if offered. If the problem persists, Sony says you can return to password sign-in through Account Management.
- You suspect account access by someone else or are locked out: Use PlayStation Support and the account recovery options available for your account.
Return to password sign-in
To switch back, sign in to Account Management, open Security, select Edit next to passkey status, and create a password for Sony account sign-in. This changes the account’s authentication setup; deleting a passkey from one device alone does not necessarily switch the account back to password sign-in. Follow Sony’s current instructions at Sony account passkey help.
