As of August 18, 2026, Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6, confirmed its name, or set a release date, price or specification. A fall 2027 launch is a widely reported target, but it remains a rumor—not a commitment. Sony says it has made no decision on the timing or pricing of its next-generation platforms, and it expects memory supply and pricing conditions to remain difficult through 2027.
The practical forecast is therefore conditional: late 2027 is plausible if production and costs cooperate; 2028 or later is also possible. The rumored hardware and price figures are too uncertain to treat as a buying guide on their own.
Has Sony confirmed the PS6?
No. Sony has not officially revealed a PS6, confirmed that this will be the product’s final name, or announced its design, launch window, price, chip or game lineup. In its investor Q&A, Sony said decisions about the timing and pricing of next-generation platforms had not been made. It also said memory prices and supply-demand conditions were expected to remain difficult through 2027.
That makes any specific date or specification an attributed report or estimate. Sony’s statement supports the idea that it is planning for a next generation; it does not confirm when a console will ship.

Why do rumors point to 2027?
The year fits a familiar hardware-cycle pattern, but several different clues are being combined—and they do not carry equal weight.
| Evidence | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| The PS5 launched in November 2020, making 2027 roughly a seven-year interval. | 2027 is a plausible planning target by the cadence of a previous generation. | Sony must follow the same schedule. |
| Sony discusses next-generation platforms and long-term planning. | Next-generation work is part of Sony’s planning. | A 2027 launch date. |
| Unverified reporting claims mass production could begin in mid-2027. | If accurate, it could fit a late-2027 retail launch. | That production will begin then or that the report describes final retail hardware. |
| Some reporting and analyst discussion point to 2028 or 2029. | Cost and supply conditions could push the schedule later. | That a delay has been decided. |
All Things How reports the fall-2027 target and alleged mid-2027 production timing; GamesRadar covers the later-launch scenario. Both are secondary reporting, not Sony announcements.
What is the rumored PS6 release date?
- Official date: None.
- Reported target: Fall or holiday 2027.
- Alternative: 2028 or later.
- Confidence: Low to moderate that 2027 could be an internal target; low that any specific retail date is settled.
It is more accurate to say “rumored for late 2027” than “launching in 2027.” A claimed production start is not the same as a confirmed launch schedule, and Sony’s own position is that timing remains undecided.

What PS6 specifications are rumored?
Reports and rumor roundups describe a custom AMD design, sometimes called “Orion.” The details below are unconfirmed and may come from different leak chains rather than one consistent, independently verified specification.
| Area | Frequently reported claim | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Custom AMD design with Zen 6-derived cores | Unconfirmed; core count and final design are not established. |
| GPU | Future AMD RDNA architecture, often called RDNA 5 | Unconfirmed and potentially based on early silicon plans. |
| Graphics performance | Estimates of about 34–40 theoretical teraflops | Not a verified retail specification or a direct measure of game performance. |
| Memory | About 30–32 GB of GDDR7 | Repeated in leak coverage, but not confirmed by Sony or AMD. |
| Memory bandwidth | About 640 GB/s in one reported configuration | Depends on final memory speed and bus configuration. |
| Ray tracing | A substantial improvement, possibly with dedicated hardware | A plausible generational direction, not a confirmed performance claim. |
| Upscaling | A PSSR successor, sometimes called “PSSR 2.0” | Name, features and implementation are unknown. |
| Storage | A faster or larger SSD than PS5 | A reasonable generational expectation; capacity and interface are unknown. |
| Disc drive | Possibly digital-first or digital-only hardware | Speculative; PlayStation’s digital-release policy does not establish PS6 hardware design. |
| Backward compatibility | PS4 and PS5 support is widely expected | Not confirmed; disc, license and game support details are unknown. |
GamerMarkt and TechPP collect many of the Orion, memory and architecture claims. They should be treated as reporting about rumors, not as Sony specifications.
Why teraflops do not settle the performance question
Teraflops describe a theoretical rate of certain calculations, not the frame rate or image quality a player will see. Architecture, ray-tracing hardware, cache, memory behavior, developer tools, power limits and upscaling all affect results. A figure associated with an early chip configuration may also change before any retail design is finalized. Claims such as “three times the PS5” should not be treated as measured gameplay performance.

Could Sony launch a cheaper console and a handheld?
Some reports describe more than one next-generation device, but Sony has not confirmed a multi-product launch. In this rumor vocabulary, “Orion” is sometimes used for a home console and “Canis” for a possible handheld. Those are leak terms, not announced product names.
TechRadar reports a possible lineup of a flagship console, a lower-cost model and a handheld, with rumored prices spanning about $350 to $1,000. That does not show that all three will launch together—or that any of them will reach market in that form.

Reports describe a possible lower-power AMD chip, Zen 6-derived CPU cores, RDNA graphics, LPDDR5X memory and a display around 1080p, potentially with a high refresh rate. None of those details is confirmed. More important for buyers is the difference between a handheld that runs supported games locally, a remote-play device that streams from a console, and a cloud device that depends primarily on an online service.

The PlayStation Portal is a remote-play product, not proof that Sony has announced a native PS6 handheld. A rumored handheld could be delayed, changed or dropped independently of a home console.
How much might the PS6 cost?
There is no official PS6 price, and rumor figures vary too widely for one number to be credible. The ranges below describe scenarios reported or discussed in coverage, not a forecast from Sony.
| Scenario | Rumored range | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cost-conscious or digital model | About $499–$599 | Speculative; no confirmed model or price. |
| Standard console | About $599–$699 | Speculative and sensitive to component costs and configuration. |
| Premium home console | About $699–$999 | High-cost rumor scenario, not an established retail price. |
| Separate handheld | About $349–$499 | Depends on an unconfirmed product actually existing. |
| Extreme high-cost claim | Above $1,000 | Some coverage extrapolates from a claimed bill of materials; materials cost alone does not determine retail price. |
For context, Sony’s March 27, 2026 U.S. price announcement set PS5 at $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99 and PS5 Pro at $899.99, effective April 2, 2026; PlayStation Portal was listed at $249.99. The PlayStation Direct U.S. store showed, in August 2026, direct prices of $649 for PS5, $599 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899 for PS5 Pro, plus certified refurbished listings at $549 for PS5 and $499 for PS5 Digital Edition. These are U.S. figures, and store listings can differ from announced MSRP or change over time. See Sony’s price announcement.

Sony has acknowledged memory-cost pressure and described evaluating pricing, cost reductions and other commercial options in its investor Q&A. Component estimates cannot be converted directly into a retail price: the final cost depends on the design, supply, regional pricing, taxes, storage and bundles, as well as how Sony balances hardware revenue with games and services. A digital-only model could cost less upfront but remove access to used-disc savings and resale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why could the PS6 arrive later than 2027?
- Memory and component costs: Sony expects difficult memory supply-demand conditions through 2027, which could make a target price harder to reach.
- Supply and manufacturing: Production capacity, yields and component availability can affect both a launch date and the number of systems available.
- Price and adoption: A costly launch system may be harder to sell broadly, giving Sony reason to wait, change the design or launch a less expensive configuration first.
- PS5 momentum: Continuing to sell PS5 and PS5 Pro systems and support cross-generation games could make a later transition strategically attractive.
- Platform continuity: Building backward compatibility and a workable transition for games and services adds technical and business considerations.
These are plausible pressures, not proof that Sony has chosen to delay. The cited discussion of a 2028–2029 window is attributed to analyst views in GamesRadar’s report.
Does PlayStation’s 2028 digital policy mean PS6 will have no disc drive?
No such conclusion is confirmed. The official U.S. PS5 page says that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available digitally, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on PS5. That is evidence of a digital-first shift in game releases, but it does not specify whether PS6 will have a built-in or optional disc drive, whether physical PS6 games will exist in every region, or whether PS5 discs will work on the next console.
Will PS6 play PS4 and PS5 games?
Continued access to prior libraries is a reasonable expectation, not a confirmed feature. Sony’s current PS5 materials promote compatibility with the PS4 library, but that says nothing definitive about PS6. Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 would run every PS5 game natively, require patches, or use a compatibility mode. Disc support, digital licenses, save transfers and accessory compatibility are also unresolved.

Should you buy a PS5 now or wait?
For someone who wants to play current PlayStation games now, buying a PS5 is not automatically a mistake: the PS6 date and price are unknown, while the existing library is available. If you already own a PS5 and are satisfied with it, there is little reason to upgrade solely because of an unconfirmed launch rumor.
| Reader situation | Practical choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a PlayStation now | Consider a PS5, particularly if you find a discount or refurbished unit. | You get access to current games without waiting through an uncertain transition. |
| Buys games digitally and wants a lower current entry price | Consider PS5 Digital Edition. | No disc-based used-game, borrowing or resale flexibility. |
| Already owns a PS5 and is content | Keep it and reassess when Sony announces actual PS6 details. | You avoid paying for a speculative upgrade. |
| Prioritizes current image quality and ray tracing | Consider PS5 Pro if those improvements matter on your display. | Sony advertises improved ray tracing, PSSR image clarity and higher or more consistent frame rates in supported games, but benefits vary by game; see the PS5 Pro feature page. |
| Wants a native PlayStation handheld | Wait for an official product announcement. | There is no confirmed native PS6 handheld; Portal is a different, remote-play category. |
| Worries about paying twice across generations | Avoid buying PS5 Pro solely as a bridge to PS6. | Its nearly $900 U.S. direct price in August 2026 is easiest to justify if its current benefits are valuable to you now. |
Waiting makes most sense if your current system meets your needs, you care more about future hardware than playing now, and you can accept a 2027–2028-or-later uncertainty. If you need a console immediately, the current PS5 library and the option of a discounted or refurbished system are firmer facts than any PS6 rumor.
