It streams supported Xbox games from Microsoft’s cloud; it does not turn a Fire TV Stick into an Xbox console or install games on the device. You need a compatible Fire TV model, a supported controller, a Microsoft account, a suitable Game Pass plan for most games, and a reliable internet connection.
The timing in the original headline is historical: Microsoft announced the partnership on June 27, 2024, and the first app rollout began in July 2024. “Next month” meant July 2024, not a future release. Microsoft’s announcement initially named the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max and 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K.
What the Xbox app does on Fire TV
The app is a cloud-gaming client. A supported game runs on Microsoft’s servers and its video and audio stream to the Fire TV; your controller inputs travel back over the internet. The Fire TV hardware does not locally run or install Xbox games, provide Xbox console storage, or reproduce the full Xbox Series X|S experience.
That distinction matters because “Xbox” can mean different things:

Microsoft expanded Fire TV compatibility in August 2024 to include the first-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max and third-generation Fire TV Cube. Its current TV compatibility page lists these Fire TV models:
| Fire TV model | Generation listed by Microsoft |
|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max | 1st generation |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max | 2nd generation |
| Fire TV Stick 4K | 2nd generation |
| Fire TV Cube | 3rd generation |
Microsoft’s August 2024 update announced the first-generation 4K Max and third-generation Cube additions. The current list does not say that every Fire TV Stick, every 4K model, or every newer Fire TV product is supported. A family name such as “Fire Stick 4K” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Check your exact model before buying anything
- On Fire TV, open Settings.
- Select My Fire TV, then About.
- Note the complete device name and generation.
- Compare it with Microsoft’s current TV compatibility list, and search for the Xbox app in the Amazon Appstore on that device.
What you need, and what it costs
For most cloud games, the practical requirements are a listed Fire TV device, an internet connection, a Microsoft account, a controller that works with the device and game, and an active Game Pass plan that includes cloud gaming. Microsoft lists Fire TV as a cloud-supported device for Game Pass Ultimate and Game Pass Premium; its plan comparison also lists cloud gaming for Essential. Catalog access and other benefits differ by plan, region, platform, and time. Check the current plan comparison before subscribing.
| U.S. plan | Monthly price | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | $9.99 | Cloud gaming is listed; this is not the full catalog or the full set of premium benefits. |
| Game Pass Premium | $14.99 | Cloud gaming is listed; it does not include every Ultimate benefit, such as eligible day-one releases. |
| Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99 | Includes the highest-tier cloud benefits and largest listed library; its catalog and features remain subject to availability. |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | Do not assume a PC-focused plan provides the same Fire TV cloud access as the plans Microsoft lists for TV devices. |
These are U.S. monthly prices reported in Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 Game Pass update and reflected in the plan information available as of August 18, 2026; prices and terms can change. The launch-era Fire TV hardware prices in the 2024 announcement are not current retail prices, so they are not useful as a present-day buying quote. The total cost for a new setup also depends on whether you already own compatible Fire TV hardware and a controller. Microsoft subscriptions generally renew automatically unless canceled; check the plan’s checkout terms for the renewal price and cancellation details.

Some free-to-play games may be streamable without a Game Pass subscription, but that is not the same as getting the Game Pass library for free. Check the game’s cloud availability and the terms in your market before relying on that exception.
Controller and connection requirements
Plan on using a game controller: the Fire TV remote is not a substitute for full game controls. Microsoft says Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, and other options can be supported, but compatibility varies by controller, Fire TV model, and game. See Microsoft’s TV cloud-gaming guidance and its linked controller information before buying a controller specifically for this setup. Pair it with Fire TV over Bluetooth and make sure it is not still connected to another device.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Microsoft recommends at least 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for relevant larger-screen use cases. A speed test alone cannot predict how responsive a game will feel: latency, Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, household traffic, ISP routing, and distance from Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure all matter. A wired connection may help where your particular Fire TV model supports an appropriate Ethernet adapter; verify the adapter and model requirements rather than assuming every stick can connect directly by Ethernet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to install and start a game
- Connect a supported Fire TV to the internet and install any available Fire TV system updates.
- Open the Amazon Appstore and search for Xbox. Amazon’s Fire TV instructions direct users to download the app from the Appstore.
- Install and open the Xbox app, then sign in with the Microsoft account that has the relevant Game Pass subscription, if required.
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller with Fire TV.
- Choose a game marked as available for cloud play and start streaming.
If the app does not appear or a game will not start
- App missing from the store: Check the exact Fire TV generation against Microsoft’s list, install system updates, restart the device, and confirm the Amazon account’s country or region and Xbox service availability. Search for “Xbox,” not only “Game Pass” or “Xbox Cloud Gaming.” An app store may hide apps incompatible with the device.
- Subscription not recognized: Confirm that the Xbox app is signed in to the same Microsoft account associated with the subscription.
- Controller will not connect: Check its battery, disconnect it from other paired devices, and verify that it is a supported controller for the Fire TV and the game.
- A Game Pass title is unavailable: A title being in Game Pass does not guarantee cloud play. Check its cloud status, your plan, and regional availability.
- Controls feel delayed or the stream stutters: Try a less congested 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, move the router or Fire TV to improve signal, and reduce competing network traffic. If the connection remains unreliable, streaming may not suit that household.
Microsoft’s availability and catalog vary by region and platform. Sideloading an app is not a reliable substitute for official device support.

What games and console features are included?
Not every Xbox game is streamable. Microsoft describes cloud access as covering select free-to-play games and most titles in the Game Pass library, but the available catalog changes and depends on plan, region, platform, and time. A game may be missing from cloud play because it is not cloud-enabled or because of licensing or feature limitations. Check the current cloud catalog rather than assuming a game in a subscription library will run on Fire TV.
Streaming also has limits compared with local console play. Microsoft’s TV FAQ notes potential differences involving resolution, audio, save storage, accessories and peripherals, and companion-app support. A Fire TV stream cannot provide a game that requires local installation or unsupported hardware features.
Should you use Fire TV instead of buying an Xbox?
It can be a useful entry point for casual players who already own a supported Fire TV, have stable low-latency internet, and want to try cloud-playable games without buying a console. It is also convenient for a second screen or travel setup, provided the device and network are suitable and the games you want are available to stream.
It is not a full console replacement for players who want local downloads, predictable low latency, discs, a broader range of compatible games, or the best available image quality. Competitive players and people with unstable or high-latency connections are particularly likely to notice the difference between streaming and local play. Treat Fire TV as a relatively low-entry-cost cloud-gaming option, not as a cheap device that becomes a complete Xbox.

- Already own a supported Fire TV: Try the app before buying another device, and use an existing verified controller if you have one.
- Considering a Fire TV purchase mainly for Xbox: Confirm the exact generation is supported, the app is available in your market, and the games and plan suit you. Include a controller and recurring subscription in your budget.
- Want local installations or reliable performance without depending on streaming: Consider an Xbox Series S or Series X instead; the upfront hardware cost is higher, but games run locally.
- Already own another compatible screen: Microsoft also supports cloud gaming on certain smart TVs and through Xbox.com/play in supported browsers. Check the model and software requirements on its TV page before choosing a device.
- Want a different streaming catalog: Amazon Luna and GeForce NOW are separate services with different libraries, account, subscription, and game-access models; neither is an Xbox app substitute.
How it compares with the original announcement
The original announcement was not a promise that Xbox would arrive on all Fire Sticks, nor that Fire TV would run console games locally. Microsoft announced the partnership on June 27, 2024, planned the first rollout for July 2024, and has since expanded the supported-device list. For a purchase decision now, use the current compatibility page and plan comparison—not launch wording, launch-era device prices, or an assumption that all Game Pass games stream.
