Fallout 4’s developer console lets you spawn items, change player stats, teleport, alter combat rules and target NPCs—but this guide applies to the PC version. PlayStation and Xbox editions do not expose the same console, and the cited command reference excludes Survival mode. The core patterns are help for discovering IDs, player.additem for adding items, tgm for god mode and coc for cell-to-cell travel.
Open the console and enter a command
- Start a Fallout 4 game on PC and open the in-game developer console.
- Type one command exactly as shown, replacing angle-bracketed arguments with real values.
- Press Enter to execute it.
Commands are not case-sensitive. You can put several commands on one line by separating them with semicolons, for example tgm; tcl.

Make a safety save first
Save before changing quests, NPCs, inventory, map state or character values. The documented syntax explains what commands do, but it does not provide a universal safety guarantee for every command. Keep a separate test save for destructive commands and debug-room experiments.
Find an item, NPC, perk or command ID
Use the in-game search command when you do not know a form ID:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches#1 Best Overall
- Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
- Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
- New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
- Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
help <matchstring> <filter> <form type>
Use a distinctive search term and the appropriate filter and form type, then verify the returned ID before running another command. This is safer than guessing when an item name has several matches. The same search pattern can locate item, NPC, perk and command entries.
How Fallout 4 IDs are written
- Leading zeroes in an eight-character hexadecimal ID may be omitted. In the documented player-reference example,
00000014and14identify the same reference. playeris a shortcut for the player-character reference in commands that require a target.- Use the exact form ID returned by
help; a name alone is not a substitute for an ID.
Inventory commands and item IDs
| Command | Use | Arguments and example | Reversibility and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
player.additem <itemID> <amount> |
Adds an item to the player inventory. | player.additem 001EC66A 1 |
Usually reversible with player.removeitem. Use a positive amount only; the cited reference warns that a negative amount can crash the game. |
player.removeitem <itemID> <amount> |
Removes an item from the player inventory. | Supply the form ID and a positive quantity. | Inventory change can be difficult to reconstruct without a prior save. |
player.showinventory |
Displays inventory entries and their IDs. | No arguments. | A community reference lists this command; verify its behavior in your game build before relying on the output. |
For a safe removal, use player.removeitem rather than trying to subtract items with a negative additem quantity.

God mode, collision and movement
| Command | Effect | Target and arguments | Reversibility and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
tgm |
Toggles god mode. | Global player toggle; no arguments. | Run it again to toggle the mode off. |
tdm |
Community command lists describe a demigod-style mode with health and encumbrance protection while ammunition behaves normally. | No arguments. | Behavior is not fully documented by the strongest reference; verify it on your build and use a test save. |
tcl |
Toggles collision, allowing no-clip movement through barriers and in the air. | Player/world toggle; no arguments. | Run it again to restore collision. Returning to normal collision before saving reduces the chance of leaving the player in an awkward location. |
player.setav speedmult <number> |
Changes the player speed multiplier. | Replace <number> with the desired value. |
Set the value deliberately and record the original if you may want to restore it. |
setgs fJumpHeightMin <number> |
Changes the minimum jump height. | Replace <number> with a value. |
An advanced, potentially disruptive game-setting tweak; test it separately from a main playthrough. |
Camera, field of view and interface
| Command | Effect | Arguments | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
tfc |
Toggles the free camera. | None. | Run it again to return to the normal camera. |
tfc 1 |
Enables free camera while freezing animations, as listed by the command reference. | Use the literal argument 1. |
Run the free-camera toggle again when finished; test before using it during an active scene. |
tm |
Toggles menus and the user interface. | None. | Run it again to restore the interface. If the HUD disappears, the command itself has not failed—the interface is hidden. |
fov <first-person FOV> <third-person FOV> |
Changes first-person and third-person field-of-view values. | Provide both FOV values. | Record your previous values if you may want to restore the original view. |
csb |
Resets current blood and damage effects. | None. | It clears existing effects rather than acting as a persistent toggle. |
Teleportation and map discovery
| Command | Effect | Arguments or example | Save-impact warning |
|---|---|---|---|
coc <cellID> |
Moves the player to a named cell. | Example: coc RedRocketExt. |
Travel itself can place you in a different world state; save before experimenting with unfamiliar cell IDs. |
coc qasmoke |
Loads a debug room containing access to many items. | Use the literal cell ID qasmoke. |
Use only on a test save. The references do not promise a safe return path for every game state. |
tmm 1 |
Community references list this value as adding map markers. | Use the literal value 1. |
Confirm the desired result before using it on a completionist save, because map discovery can change the character’s progression state. |
Detection, combat and NPC targets
Commands that do not need a selected NPC
| Command | Effect | Scope and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
tdetect |
Prevents AI detection according to the command reference. | Player detection toggle; run it again to change the state. |
killall |
Kills nearby NPCs and creatures. | Broad and potentially permanent world-state change. Reserve it for a disposable save. |
Select a target before using target commands
- Open the console and click the NPC or creature in the game world, or use
prid <referenceID>to select a known reference. - Run the target command.
- Use
pridwith no argument to deselect the current target.
| Command | Effect on selected target | Recovery and risk |
|---|---|---|
kill |
Kills the selected NPC or creature. | Can alter quests or relationships; make a safety save first. |
resurrect |
Attempts to bring the selected target back. | Does not guarantee restoration of every quest or world-state consequence. |
disable |
Removes the selected reference from the active world. | Potentially severe quest and settlement consequences; use only on a test save. |
enable |
Re-enables the selected reference. | Works only when the correct reference is selected; it is not a universal undo for every change. |
prid <referenceID> |
Selects a target by reference ID. | Requires the correct reference ID. prid without an argument clears the selection. |
Level, skills and player presentation
| Command | Effect | Arguments | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
player.setlevel <number> |
Sets the player level. | Replace <number> with the desired level. |
Changing level outside normal progression can affect the balance of a playthrough. |
player.modav <skill> <number> |
Modifies a character value by an amount. | Supply the skill or variable and the amount to add or subtract. | Record the original value so you can undo the adjustment accurately. |
player.setav <character variable> <number> |
Sets a character value directly. | Supply the variable and its new value. | The reference notes that relevant stat changes can affect perk access; use a test save if you are experimenting. |
sexchange |
Changes the player character’s sex presentation. | None. | Community references list the command; verify the result in your build before saving a main character. |
Why a Fallout 4 command may not work
The console rejects the command
Check the spelling and the number of arguments. Capitalization is not the issue because commands are case-insensitive. For an unfamiliar command or ID, search with help <matchstring> <filter> <form type> and copy the returned form ID.
An item does not appear
Search for a narrower term if several entries match, confirm the correct form type, and verify the ID before running player.additem. Use a positive quantity. A negative quantity is specifically warned against because it can crash the game; use player.removeitem when the goal is to take an item away.

A target command has no effect
Select the NPC or creature by clicking it in the console, or select it explicitly with prid <referenceID>. If the wrong target is selected, clear it with prid and select the intended reference again.
Teleportation produces an unexpected result
Confirm the cell ID and keep a pre-teleport save. Treat coc qasmoke as a debug-room test, not a normal travel shortcut, because a universally safe return path is not documented.
