Valve published official Steam Deck exterior CAD files on February 11, 2022, ahead of the handheld’s February 25 launch. The package is useful for stands, mounts, cases, grips and fit-check models, but it is not a complete engineering package for printing a working Steam Deck or a drop-in replacement shell.
Valve’s announcement is archived at Steam Community. The commonly cited download location is the SteamOS hardware repository; check its current availability and directory contents before downloading.
What Valve actually released
The files were intended for “tinkerers, modders, accessory manufacturers” and people who wanted to make a physical model of the handheld. Contemporary coverage identifies three useful parts of the release:
| File type | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| STP/STEP | Parametric CAD editing and accessory design | Provides exterior reference geometry, not complete internal housing engineering |
| STL | Slicing, mesh inspection and scale models | A triangulated mesh is harder to edit accurately than STEP |
| PDF/DWG drawings | Dimensions, port locations and keep-out checks | They do not supply the missing electronics or internal mechanisms |
The reference drawing is metric and identifies the model as steamdeck_step_20220202. A mirror is available at Valve Archive. Because the published model predates later hardware revisions, treat it as design reference rather than a guarantee of universal fit.

- Cable-management brackets and clip-on accessories
- Travel-case inserts and custom skins or vinyl-cut templates
- Camera, microphone, lighting or external-cooling mounts that preserve airflow
- Dummy shells for photography, display or ergonomic testing
Projects the files do not solve
Printing the supplied STL can produce a scale model or shell-shaped object, not a functioning computer. The package does not include the motherboard, display, battery, controls, cooling system or complete internal housing geometry. Tom’s Hardware describes the release in its contemporary report, while iFixit’s device reference is at iFixit.
A cosmetic outer cover is possible only after substantial redesign. A drop-in replacement shell requires reverse-engineering the inside of the case, sourcing every component and validating the result on real hardware.

Why a replacement shell is an engineering project
The outside contour is only the starting surface. A usable shell also needs:
- Wall thickness, ribs, screw bosses and structural load paths
- Accurate clearances for the motherboard, battery, fan, speakers, sticks, touchpads, triggers and buttons
- Display-retention features and a reliable back-cover interface
- Openings and reinforcement around USB-C, the headphone jack, microSD slot, microphones, LEDs, power and volume controls
- Vent paths that preserve intake and exhaust performance
- Material and fasteners that tolerate heat, impact, flex and repeated assembly
Valve’s drawing marks keep-out areas and warns that covering them can cause overheating, audio problems or loss of access to controls and ports. A nominal CAD fit is not automatically a printable fit: printer shrinkage, layer direction and material flexibility all change the result.

Reference dimensions and model revisions
The published model measures approximately 298.3 × 118.11 × 49.80 mm at 100% scale. iFixit lists the production LCD device at approximately 298 × 117 × 49 mm; the same page identifies the OLED refresh as a November 2023 release. The LCD display is 7 inches at 1280 × 800. These are reference values, not a promise that every accessory will fit every revision.
The OLED model arrived after the February 2022 files. iFixit says it has the same external dimensions as the LCD model, but internal layout, cooling, display, battery and shielding differences mean an LCD-derived shell or mount must be measured and test-fitted on the exact OLED unit. Do not advertise OLED compatibility from exterior dimensions alone.

Printer and material choices
A life-size model is large for a typical hobby printer. A historical assessment in Tom’s Hardware estimated roughly 300 mm of X-axis capacity for a one-piece print; a common 220 × 220 × 220 mm machine will require splitting. That estimate is not a universal print-time or machine requirement.
| Approach | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Large-format FDM | Accessible, tough parts and useful mockups | Layer lines, warping and lower fine detail |
| Resin | Fine surface detail | Full-size parts may exceed the vat; standard resins can be brittle |
| Multi-part FDM or resin | Works on smaller machines | Needs alignment features, fasteners, adhesive and finishing |
| Print service | Access to larger machines and specialist materials | Often costs more than a ready-made accessory |
For general material selection, PLA is easy to print but can soften under elevated heat; PETG is tougher and more heat-tolerant but can flex and string; ABS or ASA suit many hotter, impact-prone applications but usually need an enclosure; nylon is strong but moisture-sensitive; standard resin is detailed but often unsuitable for stressed clips. These are general manufacturing considerations, not Valve endorsements.

A practical CAD-to-print workflow
- Download the STEP/STP model and reference drawings from Valve’s repository if it is available.
- Confirm that the CAD document uses millimeters and check the overall envelope against approximately 298 × 118 × 50 mm.
- Open STEP in FreeCAD, Onshape, Fusion or another CAD package. Use Blender for sculptural mesh work; use the STL mainly for slicing or inspection.
- Create the accessory as a separate body instead of destructively altering the reference surface.
- Check USB-C, headphone, microSD, speaker, microphone, LED, button, intake and exhaust clearances against the drawing.
- Add manufacturing tolerances and, for a split print, keyed joints, alignment pins or fastener holes.
- Print a small interface coupon or only the critical section before committing to a full part.
- Test-fit it on the exact LCD or OLED revision without forcing it into place.
- Check button travel, cable access, removal force, airflow, sound and heat during normal use.
- Revise before making a final part or offering it to anyone else.
Printing the supplied STL as a model
- Import the STL into PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura or the printer maker’s slicer.
- Verify scale using the model envelope; an incorrect unit interpretation can create a miniature or oversized part.
- Split the body if the build volume cannot accommodate it, adding alignment features and a joining method.
- Orient broad surfaces to reduce supports and warping, recognizing that the best orientation depends on the printer and material.
- Treat the finished object as a model or fit-check tool. Do not install it on an operating Deck unless it has been engineered to preserve ventilation and access.
License, trademarks and selling products
The files were released under a Creative Commons license, but the exact variant should be confirmed in the live download package. A discussion attached to Valve’s announcement describes attribution, non-commercial and share-alike conditions and says commercial manufacturers should contact Valve: Steam discussion.
Public download access is not the same as unrestricted commercial permission. Follow the applicable attribution, modification, redistribution and commercial-use terms, and obtain permission where required before selling a derivative product. The file license is separate from Steam Deck trademarks, logos, packaging, patent or design-right questions, and consumer-safety obligations. A third-party accessory made from the files is not automatically Valve-approved or official.
Safety and failure modes
- Do not cover intake or exhaust openings; trapped heat can damage hardware or alter performance.
- Keep speakers, microphones, LEDs, USB-C, headphone and microSD access clear.
- A tight part can press buttons, cables, the display or motherboard. Test-fit gently and stop if it needs force.
- Internal shell work can puncture or stress the lithium-ion battery. Do not install a part that contacts it or traps heat.
- Opening or modifying the device can cause damage and may fall outside warranty coverage for user-caused faults.
- Printed bosses can crack or strip; consider appropriate inserts and verify repeated assembly.
- Commercial products require their own fit, thermal, electrical and durability validation.
When buying or outsourcing is the better option
For a simple stand, grip or case, free CAD software such as FreeCAD is usually sufficient. Onshape (official plans) and Autodesk Fusion (official product page) offer broader engineering workflows, but their current plan limits should be checked before commercial use.
If you need repeated production, a large-format FDM printer from vendors such as Prusa Research, Bambu Lab or Creality may make sense; current models and prices vary by region. For a one-off prototype, Craftcloud or Xometry can provide outsourced manufacturing, although a service may cost more than a retail accessory. For repair, use component-specific guides and parts from iFixit rather than recreating structural parts from exterior geometry.

Valve’s release is valuable open reference geometry: use STEP for design edits, STL for models and slicing, and the drawings for dimensions and keep-outs. It makes external accessories and prototypes realistic. It does not turn a 3D printer into a Steam Deck factory, and it does not provide a ready-to-print replacement shell. Anyone attempting a shell must reverse-engineer the internals, validate revision-specific fit and airflow, and address licensing and safety independently.
