Short answer: The April 2011 PlayStation Network outage led to a historical settlement, but there is no verified current nationwide U.S. claims process for that case. The separate $7.85 million PlayStation settlement publicized in 2026 concerns certain digital-game purchases from 2019 through 2023—not the 2011 breach. Having had a PSN account in 2011 alone does not qualify you for the newer case.
What happened during the 2011 PSN outage?
In April 2011, criminal intrusions affected systems used by PlayStation Network (PSN), Qriocity and Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Sony shut down PSN and related services while responding to the incident. The Canadian settlement materials describe an outage-benefit period of April 20 through May 14, 2011; the incident was a security intrusion and resulting service shutdown, not routine maintenance. The historical U.S. court filing and Canadian settlement materials document the litigation and settlement context.
Welcome Back was separate from the later settlement
Sony offered its Welcome Back program after services began returning. That customer-relief program was distinct from the later class-action settlement process. The subsequent settlement materials described additional benefits for qualifying account holders; participation in Welcome Back could affect which historical benefits a person could receive.
Who was covered by the historical settlement?
The historical U.S. settlement class described in the available materials covered U.S. residents who had a PSN account or sub-account, Qriocity account, or SOE account at any time before May 15, 2011. A 2015 settlement notice announced the process and a May 1, 2015 court hearing. Canadian users had a separate settlement with its own terms; the Canadian settlement site describes that process.

Being within a class definition did not mean every account holder received cash or every listed benefit. Benefits depended on account type, activity, Welcome Back participation, the type of claimed loss, and limits such as caps or first-come, first-served availability. Special reimbursement claims generally required documentation of qualifying expenses or losses, rather than proof only that PSN was unavailable. Sony denied the allegations; settlement did not constitute an admission of wrongdoing.
What benefits did the historical settlement describe?
The historical materials describe different possible benefits by service and circumstance, not one guaranteed payment for every PlayStation owner.

| Account or circumstance | Benefits described in historical materials |
|---|---|
| PSN account holders | Potential payment for an unused paid virtual-currency or wallet balance when specified account-activity and minimum-balance conditions were met. Eligible users who had participated in Welcome Back could choose a free PS3 or PSP game, three free PS3 themes, or a PlayStation Plus discount. Eligible users who had not participated could potentially receive two of those benefits. The materials also describe a lesser PlayStation Plus discount for some claims after limited first-come, first-served benefits were exhausted. |
| Qualifying Qriocity users who were not PSN account holders | One free month of Music Unlimited. |
| Active SOE account holders | A possible deposit of $4.50 in Station Cash. |
| Certain inactive SOE accounts | Limited account-wallet compensation, subject to the applicable conditions. |
| People claiming specific losses | Possible reimbursement under categories with documentation and eligibility requirements; the precise requirements depended on the approved settlement terms. |
These are descriptions of historical settlement benefits, not an offer that can be claimed now. The Canadian materials provide detail on the benefit structure, while U.S. eligibility and terms should be read in the context of the U.S. settlement notice and court record.
Can you still file a claim for the 2011 outage?
There is no verified current 2026 nationwide U.S. claim form for the 2011 PSN outage settlement in the available authoritative materials. The public U.S. notice dates to 2015, so it establishes a historical settlement process—not a newly open claims window. The available materials do not establish that the old process has been reopened.

If a site or social-media post promises a fresh “2011 PSN outage payout,” do not submit personal information until you independently verify the administrator and case documents. Do not assume a form for the 2026 digital-games settlement is a way to make a 2011 claim.
What the separate 2026 PlayStation settlement covers
The proposed $7.85 million settlement is about allegations concerning Sony’s restrictions on third-party game-specific vouchers and their effect on prices for certain digital games. It does not concern the 2011 intrusion, stolen data, identity theft or the outage. The official settlement site and its FAQs describe the case. The settlement remains proposed pending a final-approval hearing scheduled for October 15, 2026, according to the court order.

Who may qualify
The class is not simply “any PlayStation owner.” The settlement materials require a qualifying U.S. purchase through the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, of a game meeting the settlement’s game-specific-voucher, redemption-count and price-increase criteria. Check the official eligibility FAQs and the eligible-games list and allocation plan. A physical-disc purchase, an ordinary third-party retail code, or an unrelated digital purchase is not by itself enough.
How payment and deadlines work
The allocation plan describes PSN account credits as the primary distribution method, with the net settlement amount allocated pro rata based on qualifying purchases; it does not promise a uniform payout. Credits are not unrestricted cash. For eligible class members with deactivated PSN accounts, the administrator’s listed deadline to request a check was August 27, 2026, which has passed as of September 28, 2026. The settlement site’s July 2, 2026 deadline to opt out or object has also passed. The final-approval hearing is still scheduled for October 15, 2026, so the settlement should not be described as finalized or paid.

How to check without falling for a lookalike claim site
- Separate the dates first. A pre-May 15, 2011 account relates to the historical outage settlement. The newer settlement requires qualifying PlayStation Store purchases during April 1, 2019–December 31, 2023.
- Use the official current-case domain only for the current case. Type psndigitalgamessettlement.com into your browser and review its notice, FAQs and eligible-games information. It is not a claims portal for the 2011 outage.
- Verify contact details on the administrator’s own site. The current administrator lists 1-877-777-9145 and [email protected]. Use those details only for questions about the digital-games case.
- Do not pay to receive a settlement. Treat requests for a fee, your PSN password or your Social Security number from an unsolicited claim site as a warning sign. Do not rely on ads or social-media links to establish that a site is official.
- Do not infer eligibility from an email. A missing email does not decide eligibility; verify against the official notice and administrator rather than treating a message—or its absence—as proof.
Could one person have been covered by both cases?
Potentially: a person could have held a qualifying account before May 15, 2011 and independently made qualifying purchases during the 2019–2023 period. The two class definitions are separate, so neither account history alone nor later purchases automatically establish eligibility for the other case.
