The DualSense works on Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 over USB-C or Bluetooth, but no single installation enables every feature in every game. For the most reliable native adaptive triggers and advanced haptics, update the controller, use a data-capable USB-C cable, and let a game with native DualSense support access it directly. Steam Input, DS4Windows and DSX are compatibility or customization layers for games that need them—not universal feature unlockers.

What you need

  • A Sony DualSense controller.
  • Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11.
  • A USB-C data cable, or a Bluetooth-capable PC.
  • The free PlayStation Accessories app for firmware updates. Sony lists 250 MB of storage and a 1280×800-or-higher display as requirements: official requirements.
  • Steam Input, DS4Windows or DSX only when a particular game needs translation or extra customization.

A desktop without Bluetooth can use a USB adapter, but Sony cautions that not every commercial adapter is supported. A generic adapter also cannot guarantee wireless haptics.

What “all features” means on Windows

Feature Availability Limitation
Buttons and sticks Broad Some games require Steam Input or XInput emulation.
Touchpad and gyro Game- and software-dependent Often mapped through Steam Input or a specialist utility.
Basic rumble Common but not universal An input wrapper can alter or remove it.
Adaptive triggers Supported PC games or specialist software Requires implementation by the game or utility.
Advanced haptics Selected games Sony says PC haptics may require USB.
Speaker and microphone Windows/game-dependent Audio routing and virtual-controller profiles can interfere.
Headset jack Wired PC connection Sony specifies a wired connection for PC headset-jack use.
Light bar, LEDs and battery status Software-dependent Support varies by game and utility.

Sony also notes that PC support can differ from the PS5 version of the same game. See Sony’s PC feature guidance and its PC controller listing.

Update DualSense firmware first

  1. Install PlayStation Accessories from Sony.
  2. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth and open the app.
  3. Select the controller and choose Update when offered.
  4. Do not turn off the PC or disconnect the controller during the update.

Install the controller by USB

  1. Close games and remapping utilities.
  2. Connect the DualSense directly to the PC with a known data-capable USB-C cable.
  3. Press the PS button and wait for Windows to detect it.
  4. Confirm it appears in PlayStation Accessories, then update firmware if necessary.
  5. Open the target game and test its controller, vibration and trigger settings.
  6. For a native DualSense game, disable Steam Input for that game before testing.

A charge-only USB-C cable can power the controller without exposing it to Windows. Try another cable, USB port and a direct connection instead of a hub if detection fails. Removing the cable disconnects and turns off the controller; Sony’s connection instructions are at PlayStation Support.

#1 Best Overall
Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Install it wirelessly by Bluetooth

  1. Turn the controller off. If the player indicator is lit, hold PS until it goes out.
  2. Hold Create + PS simultaneously for at least three seconds.
  3. Release when the light bar and player indicator flash.
  4. In Windows Bluetooth settings, choose Add device and select the DualSense.
  5. After pairing, press PS to reconnect to the last paired PC.

Sony says one controller can be paired with up to four devices but connects to only one at a time. Keep it near the PC and remove stale Bluetooth entries if pairing fails.

Choose the correct input path

Game situation First setting to try
Game advertises native DualSense support USB connection and Steam Input disabled for that game.
Steam game lacks native support Enable Steam Input.
Non-Steam or XInput-only game DS4Windows, or add the game to Steam and try Steam Input.
You want paid profiles and custom trigger or lighting effects DSX, without running another mapper at the same time.

Native DualSense mode

In native mode the game communicates with the controller directly, allowing supported implementations of trigger resistance, per-channel haptics, PlayStation prompts, touchpad, gyro, speaker and microphone. Avoid unnecessary emulation while diagnosing these effects.

Steam Input

Steam Input is a practical compatibility layer, not a guarantee of PS5-quality haptics. It may hide the physical DualSense behind a virtual controller, so change the setting per game rather than globally. If native effects stop working, close other remappers, connect by USB and test with Steam Input off.

DS4Windows

Download only the official DS4Windows repository. It is useful for non-Steam games, XInput output, profiles and remapping:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the drivers requested by the project.
  2. Connect by USB or Bluetooth and select or create a profile.
  3. Choose the intended output, commonly Xbox 360/XInput.
  4. Enable HidHide so the game sees the virtual controller but not the physical one.
  5. Disable overlapping Steam remapping for games managed by DS4Windows.

The repository describes virtual DualSense, audio, microphone and VIIPER haptics in preview builds. Treat those functions as preview/beta software requiring compatible builds, not as Sony’s universal native support. Details are documented in the project’s Bluetooth audio and haptics guide.

DSX

DSX is an optional paid Steam utility for DualSense and DualSense Edge. Its listing describes profiles, remapping, trigger-resistance controls, adaptive-trigger modes, lighting and haptic conversion from sound, rumble or input. It lists Windows 10/11, 64-bit hardware and operating system, at least 600 MB of storage and internet access for ownership verification, firmware checks and driver downloads; offline use can be cached for four weeks. Do not run DSX alongside DS4Windows or Steam remapping while troubleshooting.

PlayStation DualSense™ Wireless Controller – Chroma Indigo
  • Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
  • Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button

Getting adaptive triggers and advanced haptics working

  1. Verify that the specific PC game explicitly supports DualSense effects.
  2. Use USB first; Sony says PC haptics may require a wired connection.
  3. Disable Steam Input, DS4Windows and DSX while testing native support.
  4. Enable vibration, triggers and any DualSense options in the game.
  5. Update firmware and ensure the game is running through the intended launcher and executable.

No utility can make a game generate authentic, game-specific trigger resistance or haptic events when the game has no relevant implementation. Custom utilities can simulate effects, but simulated effects are not the same as native support.

USB or Bluetooth?

Connection Advantages Disadvantages
USB-C Best chance of native haptics; simplest diagnosis and updating. Cable tether; cable must carry data.
Bluetooth Wireless convenience for ordinary input. Feature support is more variable; haptics may require USB.
Bluetooth USB adapter Adds Bluetooth to a desktop or replaces unreliable built-in Bluetooth. Adapter compatibility varies and does not guarantee wireless advanced effects.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Windows does not detect it

  • Replace the cable with a known data cable and try another USB port.
  • Avoid hubs and front-panel ports temporarily.
  • Press PS, restart Windows, and remove and re-pair Bluetooth entries.
  • Update firmware, then test on another PC or PS5 to isolate hardware failure.

The game sees no controller

  • Enable Steam Input for a Steam game.
  • Add a non-Steam game to Steam or use DS4Windows.
  • For DS4Windows, confirm its virtual controller is visible and select XInput when required.
  • Do not run Steam Input, DS4Windows and DSX together during diagnosis.

Menus move twice

This is usually simultaneous physical and virtual input. Repair or enable HidHide, run DS4Windows as administrator if needed, and verify that only the virtual controller is visible to the game. See the project guidance at DS4Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox prompts appear

The game is receiving XInput or Steam Input rather than native DualSense input. Test with Steam Input, DS4Windows and DSX closed. If the game has no PlayStation prompt support, accepting Xbox prompts may be the practical choice.

  • Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.

Haptics or triggers are missing

  • Confirm game support and connect by USB.
  • Disable every conflicting remapper.
  • Check in-game vibration and trigger settings.
  • Update firmware and check whether Windows has selected the DualSense speaker or microphone as an audio device.
  • Close software that may have exclusive controller access.

Speaker or microphone disappears

Check Windows sound input and output devices, then verify that the selected profile exposes DualSense audio. DS4Windows’ preview audio path may require matching DS4Windows and VIIPER releases and a compatible VIIPER DualSense profile.

When another controller is the better choice

If your priority is a controller that works with the widest range of PC games with minimal setup, Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller is designed around Windows 10/11 and XInput, with remapping through the Xbox Accessories app. A DualSense is the stronger choice when you value PlayStation ergonomics, the touchpad or supported adaptive-trigger and haptic implementations. The 8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter 2 can add controller connectivity, but its support does not promise every DualSense-native feature.

Do I need DS4Windows?

No. Use it mainly for non-Steam or XInput-only games, profiles and remapping.

Can I use a DualSense with Epic Games?

Yes, but recognition depends on the game. Add it to Steam for Steam Input or use DS4Windows when the game expects XInput.

Can Steam Input provide native PS5 haptics?

Steam Input can provide compatibility and mappings, but it does not automatically reproduce every game-specific adaptive-trigger or haptic effect.

Can I update firmware without a PS5?

Yes. Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app updates the controller on Windows.

Does the headphone jack work over Bluetooth on PC?
